A Heuristic Methods-Based Power Distribution System optimization toolbox

This paper proposes a toolbox for simulating the effective integration of renewable energy sources into distribution systems. The toolbox uses four heuristic methods: the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method, and three recently developed methods, namely Gray Wolf optimization (GWO), Ant Lion optimization (ALO), and Whale optimization Algorithm (WOA), for the efficient operation of power distribution systems. The toolbox consists of two main functionalities. The first one allows the user to select the test system to be solved (33-, 69-, or 141-bus test systems), the locations of the distributed generators (DGs), and the voltage regulators. In addition, the user selects the daily active power output profiles of the DGs, and the tool solves the voltage deviation problem for the specified time of day. The second functionality involves the simulation of energy storage systems and provides the optimal daily power output of the resources. With this program, a graphical user interface (GUI) allows users to select the test system, the optimization method to be used, the number of DGs and locations, the locations and number of battery energy storage systems (BESSs), and the tap changer locations. With the simple user interface, the user can manage the distribution system simulation and see the results by making appropriate changes to the test systems.

This study aims to develop methods to design the complete magnetic system for a truly portable MRI scanner for neurological and musculoskeletal (MSK) applications, optimized for field homogeneity, field of view (FoV), and gradient performance compared to existing low-weight configurations. We explore optimal elliptic-bore Halbach configurations based on discrete arrays of permanent magnets. In this way, we seek to improve the field homogeneity and remove constraints to the extent of the gradient coils typical of Halbach magnets. Specifically, we have optimized a tightly packed distribution of magnetic Nd2Fe14B cubes with differential evolution algorithms and a second array of shimming magnets with interior point and differential evolution methods. We have also designed and constructed an elliptical set of gradient coils that extend over the whole magnet length, maximizing the distance between the lobe centers. These are optimized with a target field method minimizing a cost function that considers also heat dissipation. We have employed the new toolbox to build the main magnet and gradient modules for a portable MRI scanner designed for point-of-care and residential use. The elliptical Halbach bore has semi-axes of 10 and 14& cm, and the magnet generates a field of 87& mT homogeneous down to 5700& ppm (parts per million) in a 20-cm diameter FoV;it weighs 216& kg and has a width of 65& cm and a height of 72& cm. Gradient efficiencies go up to around 0.8& mT/m/A, for a maximum of 12& mT/m within 0.5& ms with 15& A and 15& V amplifier. The distance between lobes is 28& cm, significantly increased with respect to other Halbach-based scanners. Heat dissipation is around 25& W at maximum power, and gradient deviations from linearity are below 20% in a 20-cm ***-bore Halbach magnets enhance the ergonomicity and field distribution of low-cost portable MRI scanners, while allowing for full-length gradient support to increase the FoV. This work proposes to model a small series hydraulic hybrid vehicle (SHHV) for the power demand of a real driving cycle. The real driving cycle was measured with a low-cost Bluetooth Scanner connected to the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) port of the vehicle and applied to a computational model. The hydraulic power to drive the modeled SHHV was supplied by a hydraulic pump and/or by an accumulator. optimization tools were used to size the hydraulic components. Furthermore, the optimization tools were also used to calculate the values of the control variables for activating the pump, accumulator and the hydraulic motor, in order to have the minimum fuel consumption by the vehicle's combustion engine. The model implemented had its fuel consumption reduced by 37% in relation to the passenger car utilized for the driving cycle data acquisition.

Due to extensive research into DC motor speed regulation, many techniques have been created. The most popular compensating controller in nonlinear systems is the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller. The wide range of control systems to which PID may be applied makes it valuable. PID parameter adjustment is essential since these parameters significantly impact the control system's stability and effectiveness. The efficacy of PID, Fractional Order Proportional Integral Derivative (FOPID) and Neural Network Controllers (NNC) for controlling the speed of a DC motor is presented in this paper. However, in addition to the most famous traditional controller tuning methods like the Ziegler-Nichols and Cohen-Coon procedures, a Neural Network Tuner is created to optimize the processes by reducing the error between a process variable and its set point. The performance of three distinct controllers and tuning techniques have been examined using time response characteristics. To investigate the performance of DC motor with various controllers, a MATLAB/SIMULINK model is created.

This paper presents a methodology for the optimal location of photovoltaic distributed generation (DG) in balanced or unbalanced electric power distribution system. The performance evaluation of the network is developed using the Open Distribution Systems Simulator software (OpenDSS) while the cost optimization is carried out using MATLAB optimization toolbox. An International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) medium voltage (MV) distribution network model is used as a test-system for sizing and locating photovoltaic generation sites. The optimization formulation considers the installation cost minimization, in addition to complying with other operational constraints. The case study scenarios shown were developed using an algorithm based on an optimal analysis of the installation cost for a solar plant and the grid power required to supply the total demand of the system. The results showed that DGs contribute to the improvement of the system's performance, with particular enhancement of system's voltages.

Flaps are secondary control surfaces of an aircraft, which are actuated during take-off and landing to create required lift and drag. To actuate the flaps during flight, variety of actuation mechanisms are designed from simple four-bar to complex mechanisms. In this paper, a typical eight bar mechanism is chosen based on detailed literature survey of various flap mechanisms. Flap positions for cruise, take-off and landing are configured. A novel synthesis procedure based on optimization Technique is developed to calculate the linkage dimensions of the mechanism. The synthesis procedure is reduced as an error minimizing function and solved using Genetic Algorithm based optimization technique in MATLAB optimization toolbox. The results are verified using 2D and 3D kinematic models modelled in SOLIDWORKS. A 3D printed physical model is fabricated to verify the kinematics of the mechanism. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Real-time model predictive line following control for underactuated marine vehicles

A linear model predictive control (LMPC) based framework is developed for underactuated marine vehicles’ kinematic line following while moving at a constant depth in the presence of disturbance. LMPC is used as a high level controller which sets the reference surge and yaw velocities for the low level PID tracking controllers. Used ACADO optimization toolbox solves the optimal problem at hand in real-time. This framework has shown good results both in simulation environment and in on-sea experiments. © 2017

This paper addresses the problem of engineering energy-efficient target detection applications, using unattended Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) with random node deployment and partial coverage, for long-lasting surveillance of areas of interest. As battery energy depletion is a crucial issue, an effective approach consists in switching on and off, according to proper duty cycles, sensing and communication modules of wireless sensor nodes. Making these modules work in an intermittent fashion has an impact on (i) the latency of notification transmission (depending on the communication duty cycle), (ii) the probability of missed target detection (depending on the number of deployed nodes, the sensing duty cycle, and the number of incoming targets), and (iii) the delay in detecting an incoming target. In order to optimize the system parameters to reach given performance objectives, we first derive an analytical framework which allows us to evaluate the probability of missed target detection (in the presence of either single or multiple incoming targets), the notification transmission latency, the detection delay, and the network lifetime. Then, we show how this "toolbox" can be used to optimally configure system parameters under realistic performance constraints. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Several small to moderate ultra-wideband antenna arrays with impressive performances have been created by directly optimizing the element spacings using the covariance matrix adaption evolutionary strategy. Because of the capabilities of CMA-ES, these problems with large parameter sets (e.g. 49 parameters for a 50 element array) are able to be successfully tackled to produce fruitful designs. Even though these arrays were optimized at dmin = 4.0 Î» for an 8:1 frequency bandwidth, their useful bandwidth often extends well beyond this. These results demonstrate that the CMA-ES method represents a powerful new addition to the optimization toolbox for the antenna array synthesis community.
