An algorithm for optimizing membership functions of fuzzy inference systems based on fuzzy associative memory

A fuzzy associative memory is a fuzzy logic tool for pattern recognition or control problems. Fuzzy inference systems based on fuzzy associative memory have a wide range of practical applications. These systems need to be determined how to form and how many membership functions for each input variable by analyzing its histogram. This paper proposes an algorithm for optimizing their membership functions by a threshold set and a method that finds out optimal membership functions whereby classification effects of the fuzzy inference systems can be improved. The algorithm is associated with a measure of useful degree of input membership functions to increase accurate classification rates of the system. The paper also based on the experiment to show criteria for collecting training data to improve the effect of recognition or classification of the fuzzy inference systems. To confirm the effectiveness, the proposed algorithm is applied to a pattern recognition problem with the iris data through a fuzzy inference system based on fuzzy associative memory.

This study presents a new KEmeny Median Indicator Ranks Accordance (KEMIRA) method for determining criteria priority and selection criteria weights in the case of two separate groups of criteria for solving multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. Kemeny median method is proposed to generalize experts' opinion. Medians are calculated applying three different measure functions. Criteria weights are calculated and alternatives ranking accomplished by solving optimization problem - minimization of ranks discrepancy function calculated for two groups of criteria. A numerical example for solving specific task of elite selection from security personnel is given to illustrate the proposed method.

Current trends in the field of manufacturing systems are mostly connected to the transfer of technical solutions specific to large manufacturing series toward small and medium manufacturing series. Our researches presented in this paper study thoroughly and expand the concept of modularization of multi-tool processing devices in order to obtain a high level of productivity and flexibility of the technological system, as well as a significant decrease of the adaptation costs. To this end, we elaborated and used computing methods, mathematical models, optimizing algorithms and original constructive solutions to develop new modular structures meant to optimize the construction and configuration of adjustable multi-spindle ends. We obtained the highest level of modularization for this type of equipment which integrates from the point of view of organs and is functional from the point of view of performance, highly efficient, in a flexible complex multi-tool system of simultaneous-successive and multi-directional processing.

The limited quantization digit of voltage and the effect of fringing field between adjacent electrodes (phased-array controlling units) limit the deflection efficiency when a Liquid-Crystal Phased Array (LCPA) is used for beam steering. In this paper, an optimization algorithm named pattern search is proposed to improve the diffraction efficiency. This algorithm directly optimizes the step phase slope to obtain high diffraction efficiency, rather than discussing the complex relationship between the diffraction efficiency and various influence factors. Besides, other optimization algorithms based on phase retrieval, such as GS, need the entire energy distribution;however, it is hard to obtain in practical. Our algorithm need only the energy of the target diffraction point and it can be easily realized. Firstly, we construct the model for beam steering, and point out that the deformation of the phase slope by influence factors is the reason why conventional method can not realize high diffraction efficiency. Secondly, we construct an optimization model for the issues and apply the pattern search algorithm to optimize the diffraction efficiency. The simulation results show high performance of our algorithm comparing with the conventional steering method. Finally, a set of beam steering experiments were performed with a one-dimensional LCPA being set both according to the un-optimized and the optimized recipe, and the results were in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions. We show that the deflection efficiency can be drastically improved.

The important characteristic of modem technological engineering is the systemic approach through unification and typification of problems related to production processes and equipment. The multi-criterial analysis of solutions and connections is difficult under the conditions in which the accelerated generalization of technological innovation determines sometimes an exaggerated diversification of constructive variants. Our researches, presented in this paper, provide original solutions for the development and organisation of modular structures in a computerized data base, the elaboration and use of a new method to automatically configure and reconfigure them using a computer programme. In this way we obtained the optimal variant to construct and operate completely modularized adjustable multi-spindle ends.

In this study a multizone model of spark-ignition engine combustion is validated and used to predict the thermal efficiency and NOx emissions of the engine. The model is validated against an engine map obtained from an extensive series of experiments. An optimizing algorithm based on particle swarm concepts is applied to the model to find a tradeoff between efficiency and NOx emissions using a predefined cost function. Optimization is performed for three cases, each of which progressively includes more variables for optimization. A further constrained optimization case is performed with constant values of several of the variables set at the average values found in the three prior cases. These variables are the ones that change over a small domain. The results show the potential improvement in efficiency while achieving remarkably low NOx emissions. They emphasize the importance of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) at high compression ratio and high loads when the maximum in-cylinder pressures are very high. They also suggest some strategies for valve timings that use internal EGR (residual gas) and move towards different compression and expansion ratios (Atkinson cycle).

When Simulated Annealing (SA) is applied to continuous optimization problems, the design of the neighborhood used in SA becomes important. Many experiments are necessary to determine an appropriate neighborhood range in each problem, because the neighborhood range corresponds to distance in Euclidean space and is decided arbitrarily. We propose Multi-point Simulated Annealing with Adaptive Neighborhood (MSA/AN) for continuous optimization problems, which determine the appropriate neighborhood range automatically. The proposed method provides a neighborhood range from the distance and the design variables of two search points, and generates candidate solutions using a probability distribution based on this distance in the neighborhood, and selects the next solutions from them based on the energy. In addition, a new acceptance judgment is proposed for multi-point SA based on the Metropolis criterion. The proposed method shows good performance in solving typical test problems.

In order to achieve the lateral superresolution imaging of an optical imaging system, a three-zone and multi-values phase-only pupil filter is designed to achieve the superresolution of full width at half maximum G(L)=0.65, Strehl ratio S=0.118 and ratio of maximal side lobe intensity with pupil and main lobe intensity without pupil M=0.912, which is based on pupil filter techniques and uses genetic optimizing algorithm. A three-zone phase-only pupil supperresolution confocal microscopy imaging method is established by integrating the three-zone and multi-values phase-only pupil filter designed with confocal microscopy system (CMS). Simulation results indicate that, when CMS lateral superresolution of G(L)=0.56, S=0.118 is achieved, the approach proposed can suppress the increasing of side lobe M caused by three-zone phase-only superresolution pupil from 0.912 to 0.02, and obviously improve CMS lateral resolution and imaging quality. A three-zone and two-value phase-only pupil filter is also designed, and its central intensity is slightly smaller than that of the multi-values pupil designed for the same G, however, its process technology is superior, it is better for practical application. It is therefore concluded that the design method proposed provides an effective technical approach for the design of superresolution pupil filters.

A simple mathematical method for the estimation of the optimum heat inputs in are welding has been developed in the present work, the optimization problem is to make the temperature field coincide with the requirement during welding. In the expression of the problem, an analytical solution of heat flow equation is applied for the calculation of the temperature held in welding, and the objective function is defined as the difference between calculated and required temperatures. The problem is expressed as the quadratic function of heat inputs and it results in the convex programming problem, and it is clarified that the global optimum is certainly obtained by using Kuhn-Tucker conditions in the nonlinear programming method. Furthermore, the propriety of the optimizing algorithm is evaluated experimentally by a bead-on-plate welding test, and it is concluded that the algorithm proposed in the present work is reliable and useful enough to determine the optimum heat input pattern in are welding process.
