Stability of radiomic features from positron emission tomography images: a phantom study comparing advanced reconstruction algorithms and ordered subset expectation maximization

In this study, we compared the repeatability and reproducibility of radiomic features obtained from positron emission tomography (PET) images according to the reconstruction algorithm used-advanced reconstruction algorithms, such as HYPER iterative (IT), HYPER deep learning reconstruction (DLR), and HYPER deep progressive reconstruction (DPR), or traditional ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM)-to understand the potential variations and implications of using advanced reconstruction techniques in PET-based radiomics. We used a heterogeneous phantom with acrylic spherical beads (4- or 8-mm diameter) filled with 18F. PET images were acquired and reconstructed using OSEM, IT, DLR, and DPR. Original and wavelet radiomic features were calculated using SlicerRadiomics. Radiomic feature repeatability was assessed using the Coefficient of Variance (COV) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and inter-acquisition time reproducibility was assessed using the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC). For the 4- and 8-mm diameter beads phantom, the proportion of radiomic features with a COV < 10% was equivocal or higher for the advanced reconstruction algorithm than for OSEM. ICC indicated that advanced methods generally outperformed OSEM in repeatability, except for the original features of the 8-mm beads phantom. In the inter-acquisition time reproducibility analysis, the combinations of 3 and 5 min exhibited the highest reproducibility in both phantoms, with IT and DPR showing the highest proportion of radiomic features with CCC > 0.8. Advanced reconstruction methods provided enhanced stability of radiomic features compared with OSEM, suggesting their potential for optimal image reconstruction in PET-based radiomics, offering potential benefits in clinical diagnostics and prognostics.

The aim of this study is to investigate the benefits of incorporating prior information in list mode, time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) image reconstruction using the ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) algorithm. This investigation consists of an IEC phantom study and a patient study. For the image under reconstruction, the activity profile along a line of response is treated as a priori and is combined with the TOF measurement to define a belief kernel used for forward and backward projections during the OSEM image reconstruction. Activity profiles are smoothed and combined with the TOF kernels to control the adverse impact of noise, and different levels of smoothness are attempted. The standard TOF OSEM reconstruction is used as a baseline for comparison. Image quality is assessed using a combination of visual assessment and quantitative measurement including contrast recovery coefficients (CRC) and background variability. On the IEC phantom study, the reconstruction using belief kernels converges faster and the reconstructed images are more appealing. The CRCs for all sizes of regions of interest on images reconstructed with belief kernels are higher than those of the baseline. The background variability, measured as a coefficient of variation, is generally lower for the images reconstructed using belief kernels. Similar observations occur on the patient study. Particularly, the images reconstructed using belief kernels have better defined lesions, improved contrast, and reduced background noise. OSEM PET image reconstruction using belief kernels that combine the information from prior images and TOF measurements seems promising and worth further investigation. Impact of reconstruction algorithms at different sphere-to-background ratios on PET quantification: A phantom study

Using National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) phantom, the behavior of four distinct Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) reconstruction algorithms was investigated. These reconstruction algorithms were (ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM), OSEM+ (Point Spread Function) PSF, OSEM + Time of Flight (TOF), and OSEM + TOF + PSF), and the focus was on sphere sizes and SBRs using recovery coefficients as a quantitation method. The obtained results demonstrated the significant effect of TOF on Gibbs artifact and Partial Volume Effect (PVE) at various Sphere-to-Background Ratios (SBRs). TOF-based algorithms improved quantification accuracy and mitigated the influence of Gibbs artifact, particularly at higher SBRs. Compared to PSF algorithm, TOF- based algorithms effectively mitigated the impact of PVE on small-sized spheres and less dependent on SBRs. In terms of Standardized Uptake Value (SUV) quantification, SUVmean was better when utilizing TOF-based algorithms at lower SBRs, whereas SUVmax at higher SBRs. The combination of TOF and PSF produced a promising outcomes in quantifying and detecting a small-sized spheres across various SBRs, ultimately resulting in a more reliable and precise diagnostic information.

Imaging quality improvement of ghost imaging under high correlation coefficient between speckle patterns

High correlation coefficient between speckle patterns (CCSP) results in poor imaging quality in ghost imaging (GI), especially for long-distance imaging. In this paper, we derive the analytic formula of CCSP generated by RGG and verify its effectiveness through experiments. Aiming at the degradation of imaging quality caused by high average correlation coefficient, we propose a new subset division scheme based on ordered subset expectation maximization technique to improve the quality of ghost-image. The experimental and simulation results demonstrate that our scheme can get better imaging quality under the same average correlation coefficient when compared with the commonly used GI algorithms. Even when these algorithms fail to reconstruct the target due to high average correlation coefficient, our scheme still obtains good imaging results.

A novel figure of merit to investigate 68Ga PET/CT image quality based on patient weight and lesion size using *** reconstruction algorithm: A phantom study

Introduction: *** is a Bayesian penalised-likelihood algorithm that uses a beta-value for positron emission tomography(PET)/computed tomography(CT) image reconstruction(IR). Our study proposes a novel figure of merit, named CRBV, to compare the *** performances using 68Ga PET/CT image with the ordered-subset-expectation-maximization(OSEM) algorithm and to identify the optimal beta-values for these images using two phantoms mimicking normal and overweight ***: NEMA IQ phantom with or without a ring of water-filled plastic bags (NEMAstd and NEMAow, respectively) was acquired and reconstructed with OSEM and *** at various beta-values and minutes/bed position(min/bp). Contrast recovery(CR), background variability(BV) and CRBV were calculated. Highest CRBV values were used to identify optimal beta-value ***: *** with 250 < beta < 800 improved CRBV compared to OSEM for all the investigated spheres and acquisition setups. Outside of this range, *** still outperformed OSEM with few exceptions depending on spheres diameters and phantoms(e.g.,beta-value = 1600 for diameters < 17 mm using the NEMAow phantom). Regarding the CRBV performance for IR optimization, for the 4 min/bp NEMAstd IR, beta-values = 300 -350 allowed to simultaneously optimize all diameters(except for the 10 mm);for the NEMAow IR, beta-values = 350 -500 were needed for diameters > 20 mm, while beta-values = 200 -250 were selected for the remaining diameters. For the 2 min/bp, beta-value = 500 was suitable for diameters > 17 mm in both NEMAstd and NEMAow IR, while for smaller diameters beta-value = 200 and beta-values = 250 -350 were obtained for NEMAstd and NEMAow, respectively. Conclusion: Almost all tested beta-values of *** improved the CRBV compared to OSEM. In both phantoms, simulating normal and over-weight patients, optimal beta-values were found according to lesion sizes and investigated acquisition times.

ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) is one of the most widely used reconstruction algorithm for Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images reconstruction because of their efficiency in providing a better image quality. However, by increasing the number of subsets of this method, the convergence of this algorithm is speeded which can lead to undesirable noise levels amplification and inaccurate detection of lesion in low activity image regions. This paper presents a new algorithm for bone SPECT image reconstruction based on ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) algorithms and can remove the noise from images with the best degree of accuracy. In our proposed method, a de-noising pre-processing Butterworth filter is applied on the projections followed by OSEM algorithm to reconstruct 128 axial slices from a 128 enhanced sinograms, and finally we extract the coronal and sagittal slices from the enhanced axial slices volume. Our method was compared to Maximum Likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM) and OSEM techniques used only. Each method was tested on a three dimensional Shepp-Logan phantom and a bone SPECT database and evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. The results show that the proposed method kept quantitative accuracy with preservation of the singularity and exhibited lower noise in low activity regions while achieving high-resolution recovery in structures with high activity uptake in comparison to other methods.

Data rebinning and reconstruction in 3-D PET/CT oncological studies: A Monte Carlo evaluation

An accurate identification and interpretation of neoplastic lesions by PET is related to PET image quality, and depends on several factors including data processing for image formation. The aim of this work was to assess the influence of data rebinning and reconstruction on lesion detectability and quantification for a high-resolution 3-D PET/CT system, in order to optimize 3-D PET/CT oncological protocols. Oncological F-18-FDG PET studies were Monte Carlo (MC) simulated, based on a normal-weight oncological patient study, varying lesion size, lesion-to-background ratio, statistics, and including or not attenuation and scatter effects. Single slice rebinned (SSR), Fourier rebinned (FORE) and Fully 3-D (3-D) sinograms were considered. Reconstruction was carried out using ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) and attenuation weighting OSEM (AWOSEM). Human observers evaluated images in terms of clinical parameters characteristic of lesion detectability and quantification: lesion number and lesion size. By comparison with the known activity map (input for MC simulations), identified lesions were classified as true and false positive;the true positive fraction (TPF) and sensitivity were derived, as indices of lesion detectability. % maximum number of lesions identified with erroneous size (MAX(Is)) and % errors on lesion-to-background ratio (epsilon LBR) were calculated as quantitative indices for lesion characterization. The results show that, when images corrected for scatter and attenuation are considered, 2-D rebinning allows more lesions to be identified than 3-D, with the best detectability found using FORE + AWOSEM: in this case, sensitivity was found equal to 0.43, higher than with SSR + OSEM (0.30), SSR + AWOSEM (0.23), FORE + OSEM (0.35) and 3-D (0.18 for both OSEM and AWOSEM). Quantitatively, smaller MAX(Is) and smaller epsilon LBRs were found using FORE + AWOSEM, in comparison to 3-D + AWOSEM (p = 0.125 for both parameters);FORE + OSEM presented the

In this work we compare images obtained from different list-mode reconstruction algorithms for PET data. Our analysis is based on list-mode data generated from a Geant4 simulation of the Jaszczak phantom. The first issue addressed is the influence of the raytracer used during reconstruction on the quality of the resulting images. We find that the Wu anti-aliased raytracer leads to better images than the Siddon algorithm at the expense of higher computational effort. The second question concerns a comparison of various modifications of the OSEM list-mode reconstruction algorithm. Here the convergent variant COSEM yields slightly better results at costs of much higher computational effort. However, the newer Enhanced COSEM does not need that effort to produce a similar image.
