Industrial Electricity Pricing and Renewable Energy: A Temporal analysis of the Effect of Taxes

This study investigates the industrial electricity pricing (IEP) profiles of 22 OECD countries to understand the effect of renewable energy and taxes on overall prices. Clustering analysis was performed on pricing data from the year 2000 to 2018 to observe how prices evolved. ordinal logit regression analysis was performed to determine possible associations between the clustered groups and the percentage share of renewables generated (REG), specifically linked to wind, solar photovoltaics and solar thermal. Other independent variables indicating economic and market structures were also considered. Clustering results for both prices before and after tax indicated three pricing clusters, termed low, median, and high pricing clusters. IEP in Italy and Germany was found to have the highest effect owing to taxes, while IEP in countries such as the US, Norway, Canada, and Denmark was least affected by taxes. regression results show positive associations between the clustered profiles and REG. The positive association between the non-taxed component of IEP and a unit increase in REG is 1.41 times, whereas the positive association of overall IEP price (including taxes) and a unit increase in REG is 56.26 times, which is 39.9 times higher. Our results show that REG penetration has had a minimal effect on IEP over the time under consideration, but rather that the taxation on IEP coincides with REG penetration, contributing to IEP increases.

Race and the Sanctioning of Misdemeanor Defendants

The dearth of research on the relationship between a defendant's race and the severity of sanction in misdemeanor cases is concerning, given that these cases comprise the majority of criminal cases in the U.S. The extant literature on the subject is mixed. Some studies find a noteworthy relationship between race and severity of punishment, while others report that the association is weak or in the opposite direction of what would be expected based on racial bias. It is important to study this issue further, as the consequences of a misdemeanor arrest and conviction can be significant and can have adverse consequences for an individual in society. This study contributes to the literature by creating an ordinal scale ranging from low to high severity to measure the different types of punishments typically imposed on misdemeanor defendants. The data on misdemeanor defendants were obtained from the case management system of the prosecutor's office from three counties in a large Florida jurisdiction. Results show that the odds of receiving a less severe sanction are 24.5% higher for Black than White misdemeanor defendants. However, while Black defendants are sanctioned more leniently overall, they are less likely than Whites defendants to be convicted and more likely to receive a no-sanction outcome for their misdemeanor crimes.

The Effects of Contextual Factors on PSS Usefulness: an International Questionnaire Survey

Contextual factors have been consistently argued as influencing the usefulness of planning support systems (PSS). Whereas previous studies were mostly conducted within a single planning project or based on experimental workshops, the present study looked at the application of PSS in smart city projects worldwide, and investigated the extent to which subjectively measured contextual factors contribute to PSS usefulness in smart cities. Based on a recent international questionnaire (268 respondents) designed to gather the perceptions of scholars and practitioners in the smart city realm, an ordinal regression model was fitted to assess the associations between the argued contextual factors and PSS usefulness. The results show that, in general, four contextual factors-namely the characteristics of the technology itself, user characteristics, characteristics of the planning process, and political context-have a significant influence on the usefulness of PSS, and that their impacts vary significantly. This paper emphasizes that only when PSS users can identify the critical contextual factors that are favorable and unfavorable, will the potential benefits of PSS for spatial planning be fully achieved.

Background and objectives: Traumatic axonal injury (TAI) contributes significantly to mortality and morbidity after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Its identification is still a diagnostic challenge because of the limitations of conventional imaging techniques to characterized it. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can indirectly identify areas of damaged white matter integrity by detecting water molecule diffusion alterations. Our main objective is to characterize the TAI using DTI at the early subacute stage in our series of moderate to severe TBI patients and to evaluate if there is a relationship between the information provided by the DTI and patient's outcome. Materials and methods: We have obtained DTI data from 217 patients with moderate to severe TBI acquired at a median of 19 days after TBI, and patient DTI metrics were compared with data obtained from 58 age-matched healthy controls. Region of interest method was applied to obtain mean fractional anisotropy (FA) value in 28 white matter fiber bundles susceptible to TAI. Results: Our main results were that when we compared patients with controls, patients, regardless of TBI severity, showed significantly reduced mean FA in almost all region of interest measured. We found statistically significant correlation between FA metrics and some clinical characteristics. Additionally, the FA values of the three portions of Corpus callosum, Cingulum and cerebral peduncles measured at the early subacute stage were highly associated with outcome assessed at hospital discharge and at 6 and 12 months after TBI. Conclusions: We conclude that DTI is a useful tool to characterize TAI and the detection of FA reduction in the subacute stage after TBI is associated with long-term unfavorable outcome. Effect of stakeholder's conflicts on project constraints: a tale of the construction industry

Purpose - The purpose of this research is to quantify the effect of stakeholder conflicts on project constraints in the construction industry using ordinal regression analysis. For this purpose, the most significant project constraints and factors that cause stakeholder conflicts found in the literature are measured. Design/methodology/approach - Factors causing stakeholder conflicts and project constraints are extracted through a content analysis of the published literature. Further, a questionnaire survey is conducted involving 170 professionals to assess the effect of conflicts on project constraints. Finally, to obtain a more objective assessment, a statistical model is developed, and to highlight the most severe factors causing conflict and impacting project constraints, ordinal regression analysis is performed. Findings - The results show that in the construction industry, all project constraints are affected by stakeholder conflicts. Factors that result in stakeholder conflicts indicated a positive relationship with cost, time and resources. This means that any increase or decrease in the effect of stakeholder conflicts will directly influence these three project constraints. Similarly, a negative relationship was observed between stakeholder conflicts and quality, workforce productivity, protection of environment and safety regulations in the construction industry, indicating that increase in the effect of stakeholder conflicts will decrease these four project constraints and vice versa. The results for cumulative ordinal regression model highlight that lack of communication, poor quality of completed works and change orders and rework have intense effects on project constraints collectively. Originality/value - A small number of studies have been undertaken to examine the emergence of project constraints in the developing countries. Selecting an acoustic correlate for automated measurement of American English rhotic production in children

Purpose: A current need in the field of speech-language pathology is the development of reliable and efficient techniques to evaluate accuracy of speech targets over the course of treatment. As acoustic measurement techniques improve, it should become possible to use automated scoring in lieu of ratings from a trained clinician in some contexts. This study asks which acoustic measures correspond most closely with expert ratings of children's productions of American English // in an effort to develop an automated scoring algorithm for use in treatment targeting rhotics. Method: A series of ordinal mixed-effects regression models were fit over a large sample of children's productions of words containing // that had previously been rated by three trained clinicians. Akaike/Bayesian Information Criteria were used to select the best-fitting model. Result: Controlling for age, sex, and allophonic contextual differences, the measure that accounted for the most variance in speech rating was F3-F2 distance normalised relative to a sample of age- and sex-matched speakers. Conclusion: We recommend this acoustic measure for use in future automated scoring of children's production of American English rhotics. We also suggest that computer-based treatment with automated scoring should facilitate increases in treatment dosage by improving options for home practice.

An association between adult lifespan and stature in preindustrial Lithuanian populations: analysis of skeletons

The aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that no relationship between maximal living stature and adult lifespan had existed in prehistoric and historic Lithuanian populations. The sample analyzed consisted of 1713 skeletons of adult individuals who died between the 2nd century CE and the beginning of the 19th century CE, collected from 118 archaeological sites located in the current territory of Lithuania. A cumulative logit model was applied to model ordinal age-related changes in the auricular surface and the pubic symphysis (measures of lifespan) as a function of maximal length of femur (an indicator of maximal living stature), sex, burial site and its chronology as a proxy for the place of residence and period. The lack of strong association between adult lifespan and femur length was observed for males and females, various periods and places of residence. However, the results failed to reject convincingly the hypothesis that no relationship between these two variables had existed in preindustrial Lithuanian populations. In addition to concerns regarding sampling and measurement errors, heterogeneous frailty in early life and resulting selective mortality may partly explain the results obtained.

An ordinal regression analysis of tourism enterprises' location decisions in Greece

This article investigates recent trends in tourism firms' location decisions in Greece in relation to the state policy on tourism investment incentives as well as specific factors concerning regional inherent and created resources. By means of an ordinal regression analysis, we set up a spatial model of private investments in tourism accommodation at the prefectural level (NUTS III) for the period from 1991 to 1998. The actual influence of the individual factors varies considerably. Prefectures with limited natural coastal resources, inadequate transportation infrastructure and low expertise may be less capable of attracting new tourism investments. However, their inability is partly due to the general focus of the country to mass recreational tourism. Planning and applying a more effective regional tourism policy should involve specifying the objectives of the tourism sector as well as identifying the critical regional factors that are favourable and unfavourable towards achieving those objectives.

A multilevel and multistage efficiency evaluation of innovation systems: A multiobjective DEA approach

Evaluating the efficiency of innovation systems can serve as a substantial enabling tool for policymaking serving to identify best practices and develop potential improvements of actions and strategies. It also serves to provide valuable insight in understanding the nature and dynamics of innovation process at its different stages and levels. The main aim of the paper is to present an integrated assessment and classification framework for national and regional innovation efficiency. The proposed model is based on Data Envelopment analysis and is formulated as a multiobjective mathematical program in order to consider the objectives and constraints of the different stages and levels of the innovation process. Additionally, the model copes with DEA inconsistencies when ratio measures are employed. In the second part of the study, a multicriteria decision aid approach, based on an ordinal regression model, is applied in order to study how environmental factors on innovation and entrepreneurship affect the estimated efficiency scores. The proposed approach is applied to a set of 23 European countries and their 185 corresponding regions. The results show that there are large differences regarding the efficiency scores of the different stages and levels, implying the existence of significant divergences from the expected norm concerning innovation efficiency. The contribution of the paper lies (i) in the proposed multiobjective model, which is able to model the multiple stages and levels of the innovation process and handle ratio measures without requiring the same set of inputs and outputs at different levels and (ii) in the presented application of the model in the efficiency evaluation of innovation systems, including a meta-analysis of the results based on the framework of the Quadruple Innovation Helix. What does age-comparative self-rated health measure? A cross-sectional study from the Northern Sweden MONICA Project

Aims: Self-rated health comprehensively accounts for many health domains. Using self-ratings and a knowledge of associations with health domains might help personnel in the health care sector to understand reports of ill health. The aim of this paper was to investigate associations between age-comparative self-rated health and disease, risk factors, emotions and psychosocial factors in a general population. Methods: We based our study on population-based cross-sectional surveys performed in 1999, 2004 and 2009 in northern Sweden. Participants were 25-74 years of age and 5314 of the 7500 people invited completed the survey. Comparative self-rated health was measured on a three-grade ordinal scale by the question How would you assess your general health condition compared to persons of your own age?' with the alternatives better', worse' or similar'. The independent variables were sex, age, blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index, self-reported myocardial infarction, stroke, diabetes, physical activity, smoking, risk of unemployment, satisfaction with economic situation, anxiety and depressive emotions, education and Karasek scale of working conditions. Odds ratios using ordinal regression were calculated. Results: Age, sex, stroke, myocardial infarction, diabetes, body mass index, physical activity, economic satisfaction, anxiety and depressive emotions were associated with comparative self-rated health. The risk of unemployment, a tense work situation and educational level were also associated with comparative self-rated health, although they were considerably weaker when adjusted for the the other variables. Anxiety, depressive emotions, low economic satisfaction and a tense work situation were common in the population. Conclusions:Emotions and economic satisfaction were associated with comparative self-rated health as well as some medical variables. Utilization of the knowledge of these associations in health care should be further investigated.
