Investigating the effect of the orientation program on the performance of academic advisor

BackgroundTeacher-student interactions and academic advisors are critical for student success and have positive effects on academic integrity. On the other hand, studies show that the performance of the academic advisors has not been able to gain the satisfaction of the students. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of the orientation program on the performance of academic advisors from the perspective of students and advisor professors. Materials and methodsThis quasi-experimental study was conducted, before and after the intervention in 2022-2023 in Kashan School of Nursing and Midwifery. Data were collected from 220 students of different fields who were selected through stratified random sampling and 20 faculty advisors through a questionnaire of individual characteristics and two questionnaires "Evaluation of the academic advisor performance from the perspective of himself and the perspective of the student". The intervention of this research included five 30 to 40-minute training sessions as a group for academic advisors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation) and analytical statistics (repeated-measures ANOVA) via SPSS version 22 software. ResultsThe results of the repeated-measures ANOVA showed that the mean score of advisor performance from the perspective of students was 88.31 +/- 46.70 before the intervention, which reached 114.09 +/- 45.79 and 99.76 +/- 37.53, respectively, 6 and 12 weeks after the implementation of the orientation program. Also, the mean score of advisor performance from their perspective before the intervention was 118.13 +/- 35.89 before the intervention, and 6 and 12 weeks after the implementation of the orientation program, it reached 160.38 +/- 17.23 and 168.75 +/- 8.10, respectively. Development and Pilot Testing of Children's National Hospital's New Faculty orientation program

New faculty orientation (NFO) programs are shown to increase faculty satisfaction, enhance collaboration, and support promotion, retention, and academic success. In an effort led by a clinical psychologist, the Children's National Hospital (CNH) NFO was developed, piloted, and is in its 3rd year. Data are shared regarding program development process, feasibility, and acceptability. In 2020, CNH faculty were surveyed about their new faculty member experience. CNH leaders were interviewed about important topics to include in an NFO. In FY22, the NFO was piloted across 15 Divisions. Year 2 (FY23) invited all new early career faculty. Year 3 (FY24) invited all new faculty. Feedback was obtained via REDCap after meetings and before/after the 10-month program. In 2020, 62% of recently hired faculty surveyed indicated not having any institutional level orientation. Leadership interviews supported the need for an NFO;suggested topics included promotion and provider wellness. In FY22, 27/38 invited faculty chose to participate. For FY23, 36/48 chose to participate. In FY24, 69/95 invited are participating. A needs assessment showed CNH faculty and leaders supported an NFO program. Participants report finding the program helpful;they learned about institutional resources, benefits, and operations and appreciated the networking opportunities. Longer-term metrics include faculty satisfaction, promotion, and retention.

Background: orientation programs for new nurses play an essential role in preparing them for challenges in clinical practice. Different countries have applied varying program components and durations in organizing these programs. Objectives: To explore the program components, impact, and duration of the orientation programs for new graduate nurses in hospital care settings. Method: We gathered information from studies conducted in various countries. Searches were conducted on databases including PubMed, Sage Journal, ScienceDirect, EBSCO, and Wiley, with secondary searches from 2018 to 2023 using Arkey and O 'Malley 's Review Scoping Framework. The inclusion criteria comprised studies with primary data, both qualitative and quantitative, focusing on new nurses undergoing orientation programs in hospitals. Results: Of the 989 articles screened, 14 were included. Methods identified included providing hands-on experience, sharing information, reflecting on work experiences, and developing technical skills. Significant findings encompassed increased competence, knowledge, confidence, and satisfaction, as well as professional development and positive organizational impacts. The duration of orientation programs ranged from 2 weeks to 2 years, depending on the program type and new graduate nurse needs. Conclusion: This scoping review elucidates program components, impact, and duration of new nurse orientation programs in hospitals, providing valuable insights for hospital management in designing and developing improved programs . Pre-training perceived social self-efficacy accentuates the effects of a cross-cultural coping orientation program: Evidence from a longitudinal field experiment

Analyzing additional data from a longitudinal field experiment, the present research investigate whether pre-training perceived social self-efficacy (PSSE) may moderate cross-cultural training effectiveness. On the basis of the interactionist perspective, we hypothesized that sojourners with high pre-training PSSE would benefit more from a cross-cultural coping orientation program, called "Realistic orientation program for Entry Stress" (ROPES), than sojourners with low pre-training PSSE. As a result, the treatment effects (the ROPES program over the control program-a traditional cross-cultural orientation program) would be more positive for high-PSSE sojourners than for low-PSSE sojourners. Seventy-two incoming graduate students from East Asia entering a large US public university were randomly assigned to either a ROPES program or a control program, and were assessed pre-entry and multiple times post-entry. The results strongly supported our predictions, as the hypothesized PSSE x Treatment interactions were observed on a comprehensive set of training outcomes based on multisource data. For over a decade, orientation programs have been exercised to support students transitioning from K-12 to higher education. These programs have evolved over the years to be vital intervention services that can help diverse students to acclimate and improve their transition to higher education. Nowadays, with the advance in technology, social robots (SRs) can be used to mediate content in such orientation events. Overall, SRs can help build innovative orientation processes and enhance educational interactions that aim at optimized results. In this study, we outline the design, development and experiment of an orientation activity focused on one of the essential skills students need to be successful in their academic life - teamwork through problem-based learning (PBL). This orientation activity is mediated by a human-like SR-NAO. The experiment included an activity conducted at the campus of an academic institution located in Israel. Four first-year students volunteered to participate in an experiment and another five of their peers watched the activity. As the activity was concluded, all nine students were asked about their overall assessment of the activity, and the added value of the NAO as a mediator in the current and future activity focused on PBL orientation conducted by teams. The results on the feasibility of NAO as a motivating tutor were very encouraging. We believe that this study marks the first step in developing a generic plan of action for orientation processes mediated by a SR.

Clinical Specialist Radiation Therapist in Palliative Radiation Therapy: Report of an orientation, Training, and Support program

Introduction: A clinical specialist radiation therapist (CSRT) position in palliative radiation therapy (RT) was created at our institution. Herein, we report the details of the CSRT's orientation, training, and support program. Methods: We performed an audit and needs assessment of palliative RT services at our centre. This identified opportunities for improvement that could be facilitated by the CSRT. We defined the CSRT job description including priority responsibilities: (1) optimizing palliative RT services for outpatients and developing a rapid access palliative RT program, (2) optimizing palliative RT services for inpatients at our institution, (3) improving links to community physicians and hospitals caring for patients with advanced cancers. We formed a core resource team to provide ongoing support and to design and implement the orientation and training program. The program involved training in clerical and administrative systems as well as treatment planning and physics training relevant to palliative RT. Clinical placements at several hospitals were arranged in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The CSRT worked with radiation and medical oncologists, palliative care specialists, nurse practitioners, hospitalists, and social workers. Results: Through clinical placements and self-directed learning, the CSRT gained knowledge and competencies in patient care coordination, history taking and physical examination, clinical oncology practice including the evidence-based use of palliative RT and symptom control measures, treatment planning, communication, patient advocacy, and advance care planning. We provided practice resources including office space and a planning station, educational opportunities including workshops in palliative and psychosocial care, and research opportunities including methodologic and research ethics training. Intervening to enhance proactivity for socialization: A longitudinal field experiment

Objectives: The purpose of the current study is to test the efficacy of the Proactivity orientation program (POP) in facilitating university freshmen's proactive socialization. Design/Setting: A longitudinal field experiment was designed to test the hypotheses. Based on action regulation theory, the 8-h POP included training on developing goals, collecting infor-mation, generating and executing plans, and processing feedback. Participants: A total of 148 freshmen from a comprehensive university in China were randomly assigned to a control group (N = 74) or an experimental POP intervention group (N = 74). Main outcome measures: Questionnaires regarding four proactive socialization behaviors (i.e., feedback seeking, relationship building with instructors, general socializing, and positive framing), social integration, and anxiety were administered. The Office of Educational Administration provided freshmen's GPAs for the first semester. Results: Compared with those in the control group, freshmen in the POP group (a) reported more proactive socialization behaviors (i.e., feedback seeking, relationship building with instructors, general socializing, and positive framing), (b) experienced higher levels of social integration and lower levels of anxiety in the first three and four months after entering the university, and (c) had better academic performance for the first semester. Proactive socialization behaviors were found to mediate the POP's treatment effects on some of the adjustment outcomes. Furthermore, the intervention effects of the POP did not materialize immediately, but rather, emerged over time. Conclusions: The findings provide preliminary support for the POP intervention in facilitating freshmen's proactive socialization behaviors and adjustment outcomes. Our findings also suggest the importance of proactivity for freshmen adjustment and academic success.

Perceived benefits and barriers of implementing nursing residency programs in Jordan

Aims To explore the challenges that face Jordanian nurses in the first year of employment;and understand the benefits and barriers of implementing a Nursing Residency program from the perspectives of nurses and key informants. Background Many researchers reported that novice nurses do not have an adequate level of competence needed in the real clinical practice to meet the increasing demands of healthcare systems. Methods A descriptive qualitative approach using individual interviews and focus group discussions was utilized. The sample was a purposive one that consisted of 30 Jordanian nurses and six key informants. Data were recorded and then transcribed. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. Findings The results revealed several challenges that face nurses in their first year of experience such as reality shock, lack of self-confidence, and burnout and intent to leave. Some of the perceived barriers of implementing the program were issues concerned with the responsible regulatory body, payment, and monitoring and evaluation.
