oligodendrocytes are the myelinating glial cells found in all regions of the spinal cord without apparentdorsoventral ***,during early spinal cord development,oligodendrocyte progenitorcells(OPC)induced in the motor neuron domain of the ventral neuroepithelial cells by Sonic hedgehog(Shh).The induction of oligodendrocytes by Shh is mediated by the expression of two bHLH transcriptionfactors Oligl and Olig2,whose activities are essential for oligodendrocyte lineage *** differentiation appears to be controlled by two other transcription factors,Nkx2.2 andSox10,whose expression and activities may be influenced by a variety of extracellular *** control of myelination process has remained unknown,although there is some circumferentialevidence that Nkx6.2 homeodomain transcription factor may be involved in oligodendrocyte myelination *** are the myelinating glial cells found in all regions of the central nervous system,especially in the white matter *** primary function of oligodendrocytes is to form myelin sheathsaround axons to ensure rapid and focal transmission of action potentials among *** ofoligodendrocytes caused by spinal cord injury or auto-immunal diseases such as multiple sclerosis(MS)canlead to significant impairment of neural function and body *** develop such a regeneration-basedtreatment,we will have to fully understand the molecular mechanisms that control the differentiation andmyelination of oligodendrocytes throughout animal development.A great progress has been made in theidentification of molecular pathways that control the specification,differentiation and myelination ofoligodendrocytes in the developing spinal *** minireview centers on recent findings in the molecularcontrol of oligodendrocyte development in the spinal cord.

Myelin is critical for the rapid conduction of action potentials in the vertebrate nervous *** oligodendrocyte is the cell type responsible for producing myelin and ensheathing axons in central nervous system (CNS).During early neural development,oligodendrocyte progenitor cells(OPCs) can be produced from a small number of neuroepithelial cells in both dorsal and ventral spinal cords,and both subpopulations of oligodendrocytes can contribute to axonal myelination during development and remyelination after *** of their embryonic origins,the development of OPCs appear to be regulated by the same set of regulatory *** Olig2 is essential for the initial specification of OPC cells,the terminal differentiation of OPCs is controlled by the Sox10 and Nkx2.2 transcription *** recent studies revealed a stage-dependent regulation of oligodendrocyte differentiation by Nkx2.2 homeodomain transcription *** myelination process is highly regulated by a number of extrinsic and intrinsic mechanisms during normal development of the oligodendrocyte *** several key factors have been identified to be critical for axonal myelination in the peripheral nervous system,the molecular control of CNS myelination has remained a *** this talk,I will present evidence that nectin-like cell adhesion molecules(Necl) and receptor molecules may participate in early CNS myelination and possibly in myelin regenerative process as well.
