In this letter, we investigate the performance of cooperative decode-and-forward multiple-input multiple-output relaying system using orthogonal space-time block codes with piecewise-linear (PL) receiver over correlated Nakagami-m fading channels for integer values of m. We derive the closed-form expression for the exact bit error rates of binary phase shift keying signals. The analytical expression is validated through numerical results. It is shown that the performance of PL receiver outperforms that of conventional maximal ratio combining receiver.

Optimum Performance Boundaries of OSTBC Based AF-MIMO Relay System With Energy Harvesting Receiver

This paper studies the optimum performance boundaries of a two-hop multi-antenna amplify-and-forward (AF) relay system with a multi-antenna energy harvesting (EH) receiver. The source and relay nodes employ orthogonal space-time block codes for data transmission. When instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is available, we design joint optimal source and relay precoders to achieve different tradeoffs between the energy and information transfers, which are characterized by the boundary of the rate-energy (R-E) region. For this purpose, the optimization problem is formulated as a relaxed convex problem but its optimality is confirmed with a proof that rank-one optimal precoders can always be obtained. As a consequence, it is shown that the full-rate OSTBC, like the Alamouti code, can be employed for an arbitrary number of antennas at the transmit nodes (source and relay) and support up to seven simultaneously existing EH receivers. When only second order statistics of the CSI is available, the tradeoff between outage probability (OP) and energy is characterized by the boundary of the OP-energy (OP-E) region. In this case, the precoder design problem is formulated using a convex upper bound approximation to the OP, since the exact OP expression is difficult for tractable optimization. Numerical results show that the OP-E region obtained with the upper bound of the OP is better than that with the approach based on maximization of the long-term average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The role of the different parameters such as average SNR, numbers of antennas, and spatial correlation on the boundaries of the R-E and OP-E regions is demonstrated via simulations.

In this paper, the effect of keyhole on the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks with orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) transmission is investigated. In particular, we analyze the asymptotic symbol error probability (SEP) performance of a downlink communication system where the amplifying processing at the relay can be implemented by either the linear or squaring approach. Our tractable asymptotic SEP expressions enable us to obtain both diversity and array gains. Our finding reveals that with condition n(S) > min(n(R), n(D)), the linear approach can provide the full achievable diversity gain of min(n(R), n(D)) when only the second hop suffers from the keyhole effect, i.e., single keyhole effect (SKE), where n(S), n(R), and n(D) are the number of antennas at source, relay, and destination, respectively. However, for the case that both the source-relay and relay-destination links experience the keyhole effect, i.e., double keyhole effect (DKE), the achievable diversity order is only one regardless of the number of antennas. In contrast, utilizing the squaring approach, the overall diversity gain can be achieved as min(n(R), n(D)) for both SKE and DKE. An important observation corroborated by our studies is that for satisfying the tradeoff between performance and complexity, we should use the linear approach for SKE and the squaring approach for DKE.

This paper addresses the performance of space-time coding over fading channels with impulsive noise which is known to accurately capture network interference. We use the symmetric alpha stable noise distribution and adopt two models which assume dependent and independent noise components across receive antennas. We derive pairwise error probability (PEP) of orthogonal space-time block codes (STBC) with a bench-mark genie-aided receiver (GAR), or the minimum distance receiver (MDR) which is optimal in the Gaussian case. For general space-time codes we propose a maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver, and its approximation at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The resulting asymptotically optimal receiver (AOR) does not depend on noise parameters and is computationally simple. Monte-Carlo simulations are used to supplement our analytical results and compare the performance of the receivers.

Multi-keyhole bridges the gap between single keyhole and full-scattering multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. In this paper, we therefore investigate the multi-keyhole effect on the MIMO amplify-and-forward (AF) relay downlink transmission with orthogonal space-time block codes. In particular, we derive the analytical symbol error rate (SER) expression for the considered system with arbitrary number of keyholes. Moreover, SER approximations in the high SNR regime for several important special scenarios of multi-keyhole channels are further derived. These asymptotic results provide important insights into the impact of system parameters on the SER performance. Our analysis is confirmed by comparing with Monte-Carlo simulations.

A full rate space-time block code (STBC) for four transmit antennas based on quasi-orthogonal design is proposed in this paper. The 4x4 transmission matrix of the presented quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (QOSTBC) is constructed based on Alamouti's scheme. The original maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding scheme and the low-complexity ML (LC-ML) decoding scheme for the new code are introduced. Then the decoding speed of them is compared. The simulation results show: the performance of the new code is better than that of orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) at low SNR;it also exceeds the bit error rate (BER) of OSTBC at high SNR if the new code uses constellation rotation;the LC-ML decoding scheme is faster than the original ML decoding scheme.

orthogonal space-time block codes （OSTBCs） are an efficient mean in order to exploit the diversity offered by the wireless multiple-input multiple-output （MIMO） channel. This paper considers capacity problems of OSTBCs over spatially correlated multiple-input single-out （MISO） Rayleigh fading channels in the presence of spatially correlated Rayleigh co-channel interference and additive Gaussian noise, and derives exact expressions of the ergodic capacity and outage probability （capacity distribution） for such OSTBCs. Some numerical examples are given to illustrate the effect of co-channel interference on the ergodic and outage capacity of OSTBCs.

The outage probability (OP) of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay networks using orthogonal space-time block code is investigated. In particular, a closed-form tight lower bound expression for the OP over independently but not necessarily identically distributed Nakagami-m fading channels is derived. Moreover, an asymptotic approximation for OP which reveals the coding and diversity gains is presented. The analytical expressions are validated by Monte-Carlo simulations.

We analyze diversity performance of scalar fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperation in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay channels with n(S) source antennas, n(R) relay antennas, and n(D) destination antennas. We first derive the exact symbol error probability (SEP) for maximum likelihood decoding of orthogonal space-time block codes with M-ary phase-shift keying modulation over such channels and then characterize the effect of MIMO cooperative diversity on SEP behavior in a high signal-to-noise ratio regime. We show that the simple scalar-gain AF cooperation can create the diversity order d(AF) <= n(S)n(D) + n(S)n(R)n(D)/max{n(S), n(R), n(D)} with the equality if 2 max {n(S), n(R), n(D)} >= n(S) + n(R) + n(D) - 1. This finding reveals that the number of relay antennas greater than or equal to n(S) + n(D) - 1 is required to achieve the additional diversity order n(S)n(D) by scalar-gain AF relaying. We also present the asymptotic SEP as the number of relay antennas tends to infinity.

Precoding of orthogonal space-time block codes in arbitrarily correlated MIMO channels: Iterative and closed-form solutions

A memoryless precoder is designed for orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels exhibiting joint transmit-receive correlation. Unlike most previous similar works which concentrate on transmit correlation only and pair-wise error probability (PEP) metrics: 1) The precoder is designed to minimize the exact symbol error rate (SER) as function of the channel correlation coefficients, which are fed back to the transmitter. 2) The correlation is arbitrary as it may or may not follow the so-called Kronecker structure. 3) The proposed method can handle general propagation settings including those arising from a cooperative macro-diversity (multi-base) scenario. We present two algorithms. The first is suboptimal, but provides a simple closed-form precoder that handles the case of uncorrelated transmitters, correlated receivers. The second is a fast-converging numerical optimization of the exact SER which covers the general case. Finally, a number of novel properties of the minimum SER precoder are derived.
