The waste of fish food has always been a serious problem in aquaculture. On one hand, the leftover fish food spawns a big waste in the aquaculture industry because fish food accounts for a large proportion of the investment. On the other hand, the left over fish food may pollute the water and make fishes sick. In general, the reason for fish food waste is that there is no feedback about the consumption of delivered fish food after feeding. So it is extremely difficult for fish farmers to determine the amount of feedstuff that should be delivered each time and the feeding intervals. In this paper, we propose an effective method using image processing techniques to solve this problem. During feeding events, we use an underwater camera with supplementary LED lights to obtain images of uneaten fish food pellets on the tank bottom. An algorithm is then developed to figure out the number of left pellets using adaptive otsu thresholding and a linear-time component labeling algorithm. This proposed algorithm proves to be effective in handling the non-uniform lighting and very accurate number of pellets are counted in experiments.

An image enhancement algorithm based on Gaussian weighted bilateral filtering and Retinex theory is proposed to solve the disadvantages about halo, grey and noise amplification phenomenons of single-scale Retinex algorithm. First, the illumination images are estimated with Gaussian weighted bilateral filtering and their influence on visual effect is removed, which can overcome the halo phenomenon effectively. Then the contrast in low contrast regions is enhanced with piecewise linear transformation, which can improve the grey phenomenon of enhanced images. Finally, threshold values are determined by otsu algorithm to identify the dark areas of images, and the noise in dark areas is removed by bilateral filtering. Experiments show that the new algorithm can remove halo phenomenon, enhance the contrast of images, get more abundant image information and overcome the noise amplification phenomenon, which is better than the conventional single-scale Retinex algorithm and the Retinex algorithm based on bilateral filtering.

Sea-sky-line detection in complicated sea-sky background plays an important role in the long-range moving objects detection and the security of sea port. This paper presents a new method to detect the sea-sky-line. In the first step, the original image is transformed into grayscale image and the seasky-line region is located by using the textural features gray-level co-occurrence matrix based on texture feature. In the second step,the adaptive segmentation thresholds are obtained by the otsu algorithm, which produces a set of sea-sky-line candidate points. Finally, a simple clustering method is adopted to select appropriate points and transform them by straight line fitting. The results of experiments established on real-world sea-sky images demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach.

Detailed information about a building and its surrounding is generally contained in hi-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. An approach to extract the information and to identify the building with linear features from a single hi-resolution SAR image has been developed. With the strong radar backscattering and shape feature of a building in SAR image, external markers were derived by an otsu algorithm and a morphology algorithm. Then the minima imposition technique was used to modify the edge-enhanced SAR image coupled with the markers. Finally, the linear building boundaries were obtained using the watershed algorithm. Results of building extract from three types of developed areas were satisfactory.

In order to improve the accuracy of detecting lane for automatic vehicle driving, a method for detecting the straight part of Lane is proposed, which is the Multi-Scale Hough transform method for lane detection based on the algorithm of otsu and Canny. First of all, by the methods of otsu to segment image and use the morphology operation of erode and dilate to wipe off the information of roadside trees and fences to strengthen the road boundary *** the lane edge and feature is gained by the canny operator. At last, using Standard Hough Transform, Progressiveness Probabilities Hough Transform and Multi-Scale Hough Transform complete the detection of lane's straight part. The experimental results show that, Multi-Scale Hough Transform method can accurately detect the lane line and provide the reliable basis for the path planning, automatic follow-up vehicle driving and lane departure warning.

By combining three-frame-difference method with background subtraction method, an approach is proposed for rapid detection and identification of moving targets. First the background frame is achieved after decoding frame operation on video which is collected by the robotic fish platform and made into gray-level. Then the threshold determined by the otsu algorithm is employed to transform them into binary images. After that, a new binary image (F1) that the moving targets are extracted is obtained by three-frame-difference method mixed with AND logic operator and the mathematical morphology operation. If moving targets are detected in frame (F1), background subtraction method is applied to get another binary images (F2);otherwise specific messages will be shown in the frame. Finally, accurate image is obtained by using the 4-neighbor topology method mixed with the AND operation between F1 and F2. Program simulation experiments show that in the robotic fish system the proposed algorithm can detect fish and judge moving situation accurately, completely and quickly.
