A photovoltaic (pV) solar panels exhibit non-linear current-voltage characteristics, and according to the maximum power transform (MpT) theory, it can produce maximum power at only one particular operating point (op), namely, when the source impedance matches with the load impedance, a match which cannot be guaranteed spontaneously. Furthermore, the maximum power point (Mpp) changes with temperature and light intensity variations. Therefore, different algorithms have been developed for maximum power point tracking (MppT) based on offline and online methods. Evaluating the performance of these algorithms for various pV systems operating under highly dynamic environments are essentials to ensure a reliable, efficient, cost-effective, and high performance systems. one possible approach for system evaluation is to use computer simulation. This paper addresses the use of MATLAB software as a simulation tool for evaluating the performance of MppT for pV systems.

This paper provides a complet structure of Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) consisting of a variable speed wind turbine, a drive train, a permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator pMSG, electronic power converters connected to the grid. To achieve the maximum of generated power the MppT principle is essential, it is based on the perturb & observe (p&o) algorithm. To reduce cost of the structure by avoiding speed sensors, the adopted MppT strategy is based on sensorless wind speed, air density and turbine parameters, and generates the output used to control the buck. Then a regulation is realised for the grid side in order to control the inverter and a pLL is used to synchronize the frequency of the inverter voltages with that of the grid voltages. At first, we show the complete chain and detail its components. Then we describe the speed estimator used and the chosen method to design a sensorless MppT. Simulation results can be found at the end of this paper, confirming the performance of the proposed approach.

Today, the energy crisis in the world has led to the rise in use of renewable energy sources. With the advancement in power electronic technology, the solar photovoltaic energy has been recognized as an important renewable energy resource because it is clean, abundant and pollution free. The efficiency of the photovoltaic system may be increased by using Maximum power point Tracker (MppT). A number of algorithms are developed to track the maximum power point efficiently. Most of the existing MppT algorithms suffer from the drawback of being slow or wrong tracking. Introduction of intelligent MppTs in pV systems is very promising. This paper proposes an intelligent control method for the maximum power point tracking (MppT) of a photovoltaic system under variable insolation conditions. Here in this paper, intelligent control method uses a Fuzzy Logic Controller applied to a DC-DC converter device. The result is compared with the results obtained by using p&o method. The effectiveness of proposed algorithm is validated by simulation using Matlab/Simulink and is compared to those obtained by the conventional methods. The result shows that the fuzzy logic controller exhibits a better performance compared to that of conventional method.

In this work, that partially validates an obtained patent [18], a structure of grid-connected three-phase three-wire shunt active filter with photovoltaic generator (SAF/pVG), without DC/DC converter, is proposed to compensate the electrical grids from perturbations (like harmonics, reactive power, unbalance, etc.), while injecting to the loads/grid the maximum power (MppT) of the pVG. In this structure, which without Dc/Dc converter is more reliable and economical, an extended instantaneous real and imaginary powers method, with an advanced pLL, is proposed to identify, jointly or individually, all current perturbations, as well as current at maximum pV power to be injected in phase with pCC' fundamental voltage. The DC voltage control loop is, in this case, maximum power-based, unlike the conventional maximum current-based loop, which allows easier integration MppT of the pVG into the instantaneous powers method. In this research, the DC side voltage, of the SAF/pVG, is equal to the voltage at maximum pV power, provided by p&o algorithm. Besides, only one current control loop is necessary in the proposed control strategy. Finally, the proposed structure including the control strategy are validated via simulations on a conventional nonlinear industrial load.

This paper presents design and experimental implementation of photovoltaic system based on a new quasi-square wave resonant switch (QSW) dc-dc soft-switching buck converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) that controlled by a maximum power point tracking (MppT) was proposed. The switching losses of the power switch in the proposed system was turned-on and turned-off by soft-switching technique. The control circuit of the proposed system was realized by a microcontroller with MC56F8323EVM based on the p&o method. The MppT was implemented in a software program with a self-tuning function, which automatically adjusts the array reference voltage and voltage step size to achieve the maximum power tracking under changing irradiations. From the experimental overall efficiency of the proposed system was 95.0% and The tracking efficiency is improved on average by 16 %.

In this paper, a novel algorithm based MppT has been suggested for extracting maximum possible power from pV module. The proposed algorithm for controlling the MppT is based upon the mostly used perturb and observe (p&o) method. A long with the proposed algorithm, different existing algorithms have been compared in terms of their tracking speed and implementation complexity. The solar module characteristics (I-V and p-V) have been simulated in MATLAB. The simulation results for various parameters of boost converter have also been obtained. In this paper, we discuss the results of our study of an improved maximum power point tracker ( MppT) of a pV system. The proposed MppT algorithm is based on the incremental perturbation and observation (Ip&o) strategy in which the perturbation steps have been increased to get closer to the maximum power point with minimum possible oscillations. The pV power system, using the proposed MppT, will be able to optimally track maximum power points with minimum possible oscillation around maximum power points (Mpps). Consequently the light to electricity conversion efficiency can be improved significantly.

This paper presents a new single switched inductor-capacitor coupled transformer-less high gain DC-DC converter which when directly fed from pV in which the low dc output voltage of pV module is converted into high dc output voltage. A state space model of the proposed converter is also presented in the paper. The constant output voltage of 300V is obtained by close loop control of converter using pID controller for different input voltage from pV module. pID controller is designed using Ziegler Nichols Method. Thirty six solar cells are used to design a pV module connected to the dc-dc converter. A MppT controller using perturb and observe algorithm is used to find the maximum power point of the pV module. All the simulations are done in MATLAB-SIMULINK environment.

Roof-top solar pV system has an important place in the context of rural electrification where extension of distribution grid is not economically viable. In this paper, a solar pV converter system with low storage requirement is proposed which is suitable for this application. The system consists of two boost converters of different power rating connected to the output of a solar pV panel. The output of the low power rating converter is connected to a battery while output of the other converter is regulated. The split converter approach to feed power to different kind of loads leads to reduced rating of storage elements while maintaining MppT operation. The paper also proposes a p&o algorithm based analog MppT controller which uses low-complexity circuit components to realize memory elements and does not require any signal multiplier for power calculation. Modeling and control of the pV connected converters are presented in this paper. An experimental prototype validates the operation of the system under real life input and loading conditions. The prototype is tested with different pV modules with peak output power of 164 W, 178W and 255 W. The proposed MppT controller achieves a 99.92% tracking efficiency at 255 W pV output.

To improve utilization ratio of the stand-alone photovoltaic system, a strategy of four-stage charging control is put forward for VRLA batteries. Considering system performance, the choice of charge converter's structures and characteristics of driving circuit is analyzed in this paper. perturbation and observation method is adopted to implement maximum power point tracking (MppT) of solar cells and switch charging algorithm automatically and accurately. Experimental results show that the system runs stably, implements four-stage charging according to different status of battery, which consequently could make full use of solar energy and increase system efficiency to 90.32%.

During the last couple of decades, methods of electricity production have been changing significantly around the world. The transition is happening from the conventional sources of energy towards the renewables. Solar power is one of the significant source of renew- able energy to electricity production. However, there are some limitations to convert this energy coming from sunlight into electricity, since, we cannot extract the whole energy of the sunlight that a solar panel receives. There are two major issues regarding the solar power production: one is the fluctuating grid power due to the large and rapid changes in pV power generation and the other is quite low conversion efficiency. Therefore, address- ing these issues is the main focus area of the thesis. The solar cell is highly dynamic in nature and its performance depends primarily on the light intensity E and the environmental temperature T. It is not possible to connect the power generated by a photovoltaic pV panel directly to load or utility grid, rather it needs to be controlled and modified in order to make it useable. For this purpose, there are various types of DC-DC converters designed depending upon the user's requirements. However, for the grid-connected pV modules DC-DC boost converters are used along with DC-AC inverters to stabilize the output power and to improve the solar power qual- ity. In this thesis, MoSFET switched DC-DC 15V to 24V boost converter is used to take power from pV module and feed the stabilized power to the battery load. In addition, the Texas Instruments TM4C123G Tiva Launchpad microcontroller is used to regulate and control the converter. The other major problem with the solar generation is significantly lower conversion effi- ciency from solar intensity to electricity.
