The computation of end-winding leakage inductance is often an expensive task during the design process of electrical machines, but still important for an accurate estimation of the expected short circuit current of the evaluated design. Since commonly used 3D finite element analysis (FEA) based approaches require complex modelling and consist of time consuming solving, they are less suitable for a fast evaluation. Alternatively, methods based on the Neumann-Integral can decrease the calculation time and reduce the model complexity, but suffer from the requirement of numerical integration. This paper presents an enhanced approach, based on the partial element equivalent circuit (peec) method, to estimate the end-winding leakage inductance by applying closed form analytical solutions for fundamental peec cell geometries to arbitrary hairpin winding configurations. To emphasize the benefit and the merits of the proposed approach, a study case traction motor is analyzed and the results are compared to complex 3D FEA and measurements by evaluating the short circuit current. Finally, the approach is used to estimate the influence of short pitchening on the end-winding leakage inductance.

A mathematical model of the partial-element equivalent circuit method is developed in this paper that can be used to accurately calculate lightning current along a high-voltage alternating current substation grounding system buried in multilayered soil. Combined with the fast Fourier transform (FFT), the conduction effect of the components of the current harmonics is analyzed, and the effect of capacitance and induction between layers of soil are examined. Furthermore, the effects of the frequency-dependent conductivity and permittivity of the soil are considered. To speed-up calculation, the quasi-static complex image method and a closed form of Green's function are used. Through the inverse FFT, the model can calculate the distribution of lightning current in any grounding system. This can be used to study the performance of the system's response to transient lightning.

Integral-equation based methods for the solution of Maxwell's equations require that the physical system under analysis be meshed into elementary volumes and surfaces. This happens for the method of moments (MoM) and the partial element equivalent circuit (peec) method. Then, interaction integrals describing the electric and magnetic field coupling between these elementary regions need to be computed. This is typically done in the frequency domain by resorting to numerical quadrature schemes. In the time domain (TD), brute approximations are typically done leading to simplified schemes which lack the accuracy especially for electrically large problems when propagation delays are important. Such approximations are quite poor also for close elementary regions which are very strong and, thus very important to the overall solution. Hence, in the perspective of developing an accurate time domain solver, it is desirable to have time domain analytical or quasi-analytical forms of the interaction integrals. In this work, we shall derive quasi-closed-form expressions for retarded coefficients as they appear in the partial element equivalent circuit (peec) method. To this aim, the Cagniard-DeHoop (CdH) technique exploiting pertinent integration path deformation in the complex-domain leads to semi-analytical forms. The analysis is carried out for a pair of parallel (but non coplanar) and orthogonal fundamental surface elements as they occur in the modeling of the electric field coupling due to free or bound charges on the surface of conductors and dielectrics. The same results hold also for the magnetic field coupling assuming that currents flow within thin conductors. The accuracy of the proposed approach is tested for representative parallel and orthogonal patches.

The intentional and unintentional radiations are of great importance to electromagnetic coupling and radiation problems in both high and low frequency regimes. However, conventional computational methods emphasize the port-to-port performance instead of the detailed radiation mechanism that is critical to designs and optimizations. In this paper, we employ the peec method to quantitively analyze, model, and illustrate how the energy is coupled and radiated. We also try to point out, based on calculations, which part is a greater contributor to the wanted or unwanted radiation. Employing the dynamic Green's function, the power terms associated with the inductive and capacitive components in the peec model can be explicitly extracted and categorized. Then the power relationship between multi-radiators and sub-segmentations of a single radiator can be analyzed clearly. How the partial elements contribute to radiation and transmission powers is also demonstrated at the end of the paper.

Analysis and test of a 1m / 275 mT large-scale high-intensity magnetic field immunity test coil system for ITER

The magnetic field immunity test is a qualification procedure for all types of electrical and electronic equipment located in ITER Tokamak areas where the static magnetic induction is higher than 5 mT. To perform the magnetic field immunity tests, a large-scale high-intensity magnetic field coil system required by ITER organization was developed and tested. The designed test coil system is capable of generating a homogeneous magnetic field with a maximum magnetic flux density of 275 mT in a cubic test zone with a side-length of 1 m. Since the scale and intensity of the test field are high, it is important to ensure the stability of the test coil system. In this paper, we report the engineering analysis and test results of the ITER test coil system. First, the water cooling analysis and design based on the finite element method (FEM) were performed to ensure the thermal stability. Then, the equivalent stress and deformation of the coil system under rated condition and seismic event were analyzed to verify the structural stability. Further, the inductance frequency characteristic of the coil system was analyzed through partial element equivalent circuit (peec) method to support the control strategy design of the power supply. In addition, a speeding-up inductance matrix calculation method was brought forward, which avoids redundant computation and significantly improves computational efficiency. At last, resistance, inductance, and temperature rise tests were completed to verify the design of the test coil.

In this paper, we propose a novel parameterized model order reduction technique for circuits described by the delayed partial element equivalent circuit method. The moment vectors associated with frequency are excluded while forming the moments' subspace. This leads to obtaining very compact parameterized reduced order models. An implicit multiparameter moment matching algorithm is used for the moments related to the design parameters. Numerical results validate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed technique in both frequency- and time-domain. The time-domain response of the reduced order models is obtained using the numerical inversion of Laplace transform, which avoids stability issues as well as the computationally expensive repeated interpolation steps associated with conventional time-stepping integration method for delayed differential equations.

The impact of the stray inductances originated from interconnects in power electronics becomes crucial with the next generation of SiC devices. This paper shows that the existing layout of a railway inverter, operating with Si IGBTs already exhibits a dynamic current imbalance between paralleled modules. This will not allow using this geometry with SiC MOSFETs. A complete investigation of the electromagnetic origin of this issue has been performed. A generic circuit model has been proposed to establish a cabling rule to design a Gate Distribution Printed Circuit Board (PCB) in such a way that it compensates the power dissymmetry. An optimization strategy has been used to obtain a new geometry of this PCB, which has been validated with a time domain simulation.

Silicon Carbide (SiC) power semiconductor devices achieve low switching losses with fast switching operation and miniaturized power conversion circuit. SiC power module for high voltage and large current is subject to large di/dt and dv/dt in switching transient. Large di/dt induces surge voltage and ringing oscillation by interacting with circuit parasitic inductance and capacitance. These are fatal factors for electromagnetic interference (EMI) of the circuit. This report studies modeling of parasitic inductance in SiC power module based on three-dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic analysis to realize low EMI design for power conversion circuit. The developed Partial Equivalent Element Circuit (peec) model of SiC power module is applied to circuit analysis. The simulated time response of voltage/current in switching operation and frequency spectrum of the conducted EMI for the tested converter agree with the measurement result well.

In this work, a marching-on-time solver for time-domain simulation of partial element equivalent circuit (peec) models of electromagnetic systems is presented. The peec method is based on the electric field integral equation and the continuity equation. It describes separate magnetic and electric field couplings in terms of partial inductances and coefficients of potential. When the propagation delay is taken into account, the enforcement of Kirchhoff current and voltage laws results in a set of delayed differential equations. Typically, in the peec method, currents and charges are expanded with rectangular basis functions in both time and space. In this work, higher order basis functions are used to expand currents and charges in time. The resulting TD-peec solver is tested by comparison with other solvers that operate in both the time- and the frequency-domain and exhibits a satisfactory accuracy and better stability properties.

Electromagnetic and thermal simulation of stacked NI REBCO pancake coils after normal-state transition

This paper presents the current and thermal phenomena of multi-stacked No-Insulation (NI) REBa2 Cu3O7-x (REBCO, RE = Rare Earth) pancake coils during a local normal-state transition. An NI winding technique is expected to enhance the thermal stability of REBCO pancake coils, and it was verified in numerical simulations on a single pancake coil. However, a multi-stack of pancake coils are used to generate a high magnetic field in practical applications. When a normal-state transition occurs in one of multi-stacked pancake coils, it may deteriorate the stability of the other pancake coils. Therefore, we have developed a numerical simulation code to clarify the current and thermal behaviors of multi-stacked NI REBCO pancake coils using a partial element equivalent circuit model and a thermal finite element method.
