This article deals with the computation of robustly performing Proportional-Integral (pi) controllers for interval plants, where the performance measures are represented by the worst-case Gain Margin (GM) and Phase Margin (PM) specifications, in the event of multiple Phase Crossover Frequencies (PCFs) and/or Gain Crossover Frequencies (GCFs). The multiplicity of PCFs and GCFs poses a considerable complication in frequency-domain control design methods. The paper is a continuation of the authors' previous work that applied the robust pi controller design approach to a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR). This preceding application represented the system with a single PCF and a single GCF, but the current article focuses on a case of multiple PCFs and GCFs. The determination of a robust performance region in the P-I plane is based on the stability/performance boundary locus method and the sixteen plant theorem. In the illustrative example, a robust performance region is obtained for an experimental oblique wing aircraft that is mathematically modeled as the unstable interval plant. The direct application of the method results in the (pseudo-)GM and (pseudo-)PM regions that "illogically" protrude from the stability region. Consequently, a deeper analysis of the selected points in the P-I plane shows that the calculated GM and PM boundary loci are related to the numerically correct values, but that the results may be misleading, especially for the loci outside the stability region, due to the multiplicity of the PCFs and GCFs. Nevertheless, the example eventually shows that the important parts of the GM and PM regions, i.e., the parts that have an impact on the final robust performance region, are valid. Thus, the method is applicable even to unstable interval plants and to the control loops with multiple PCFs and GCFs.

This example-oriented article addresses the computation of regions of all robustly relatively stabilizing Proportional-Integral (pi) controllers under various robust stability margins & alpha;for Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) plants with unstructured multiplicative uncertainty, where the plant model with multiplicative uncertainty is built on the basis of the second-order plant with three uncertain parameters. The applied graphical method, adopted from the authors' previous work, is grounded in finding the contour that is linked to the pairs of P-I coefficients marginally fulfilling the condition of robust relative stability expressed using the H & INFIN;norm. The illustrative example in the current article emphasizes that the technique itself for plotting the boundary contour of robust relative stability needs to be combined with the precondition of the nominally stable feedback control system and with the line for which the integral parameter equals zero in order to get the final robust relative stability regions. The calculations of the robust relative stability regions for various robust stability margins & alpha;are followed by the demonstration of the control behavior for two selected controllers applied to a set of members from the family of plants.

Systems which present the actuator element saturation for a long time can force high overshoot peaks due to the integral action. Considering that, the main objective of this work is to carry out a case study of an Anti-Windup Technique (AWT) with 5 distinct classic Proportional-Integral (pi) controllers applied on a SMAR didactic level system, where the results with and without AWT are compared to each one. The tests were carried out through implementations in MATLAB software, where the results showed a high necessity to use anti-windup techniques in these systems. As for the controller's tuning method efficiency, the Integral of Squared Error (ISE) index proved that the Cohen-Coon and Ziegler-Nichols controllers showed better results.

Robust decentralized pi controllers design for voltage regulation in distribution networks with DG

The presence of Distributed Generators (DGs) in distribution networks may cause voltage fluctuations due to the reverse power flow. To solve this problem the present paper proposes a decentralized approach to regulate the voltage amplitude of the nodes to which the DGs are connected. Each DG is equipped with a pi decentralized controller whose parameters are tuned using a MIMO design. Zero voltage regulation error, robust stability and tolerance to the disconnection of DGs are guaranteed. A IEEE test distribution system with 123 nodes and 15 PVs is simulated to assess the obtained performance. The numerical results demonstrate that the application of the proposed design can help to guarantee robust voltage regulation.

Parametric optimization-based design of pi controllers: application to a DC servomechanism

Purpose - This paper aims to propose an analytical method for designing parametric optimization- based proportional integral (pi) controllers. Design/methodology/approach - In this method, a performance index containing the weighted summation of the integral square of the error and its derivative is minimized. This performance index is analytically calculated in terms of the controller parameters by solving a Lyapunov equation. Then partial derivatives of the performance index with respect to controller parameters are calculated. Equating these partial derivatives to zero gives explicit relations for the pi controller parameters. Findings - The experimental tests on a DC servomotor system are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. Originality/value - This paper proposes an analytical parametric optimization approach for designing pi controllers for the first time. The application of the proposed method in a laboratory experiment is examined.

The contribution is intended to present a method of computing robustly stabilizing pi controllers for linear time-invariant systems with unstructured multiplicative uncertainty. This graphical technique is based on the application of basic robust stability condition and plotting the robust stability border pairs of P-I parameters, which subsequently leads to the robust stability region. The illustrative example is presented to show the effectivity of this straightforward approach.

This paper presents the application of optimization metaheuristics in direct torque control with space vector modulation (DTC-SVM) of a three-phase induction motor. Two metaheuristic algorithms are considered: Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and Differential Evolution (DE). These techniques are consideredin order to achieve an optimized tuning of proportional-integral (pi) controllers in the DTC-SVM controlloops, such as rotor speed, electromagnetic torque, stator flux linkage and estimation of the linkage statorflux. Hence, the paper aims to contribute to adjusting the pi controllers of DTC-SVM. All the optimization procedure is performed via computer simulation. Once the optimized gains are obtained, they are appliedto the practical system developed herein. Simulation and experimental results are presented in order to validate the approach proposed. BLT Method for pi controllers of Unstable Systems

The biggest log modulus tuning (BLT) method is extended to unstable systems. The method is modified to design (i) decentralized Proportional-Integral (pi) controllers and (ii) centralized pi controllers for two-input two-output (TITO) systems. A method is given to specify the value for L-cm(max). The internal model controller using Tanttu and Lieslehto method is applied for centralized controller design. The detuning parameter (F) is selected for both the schemes (centralized controller and decentralized controller) to get the value of BLT as + 12 dB. Simulation studies are carried out for two TITO systems to evaluate the performance of both the proposed schemes. The centralized controllers produce superior performances and decreased interactions over the decentralized pi controllers. The present method gives robust performances.

In distributed generation and modern smart grids, the voltage source inverter (VSI) is commonly used as a basic interface between the different power sources and devices. The control capabilities of the VSI are very essential in transforming the passive distribution network into an active one. In this frame, the modeling, control and stability analysis of a VSI, standing as an interface between a dc current source and a three-phase voltage grid, is investigated. Adopting the mean value model of the VSI in the synchronously rotating d-q reference frame, a pair of simple cascaded mode controllers are proposed to locally regulate the reactive power and the dc voltage, respectively. As shown in the paper, stable inner-loop current controllers can be of simple proportional-integral (pi) form with damping, which are fully independent from the system parameters;the outer-loop voltage and power controllers are also of simple pi type. Hence the paper focuses on presenting the detailed nonlinear analysis needed for proving stability of the VSI with the proposed controllers incorporated. Finally, the theoretical results are further verified by extended simulations.

this paper introduces a new design method of discrete-time fractional-order pi lambda controllers. It is based on using an exact discretization method that always guarantees the implementation of 3rd-order, minimum-phase, and stable discrete-time controllers. The structure of the controller can be considered as an adaptive one since it only depends on the order of the controller, which is one of three tuning parameters. The other two parameters are the controller gain, and its integral reset time constant. The exact discretization method is more effective than the direct or indirect ones, where rational z-transfer functions are developed instead of using generating functions. The hereditary effect of the proposed controllers can be extended by increasing the order of the discrete-time operators beyond three. The main points of the proposed method are illustrated via numerical simulations.
