In order to improve the automation degree of robot, design size of the robot is reduced, a new industrial robot has been designed using plc, servo motor drive and servo motor as the core component, through the plc programming and the Modbus communication. IPC and Delta plc of this kind of robot uses RS232 serial port and communication mode of ASCII protocol to control servo motor, force control software and servo driver use Modbus protocol communication mode for real-time monitoring of motor movement state. Through the plc programming, the positioning function of the industrial robot servo motor is realized. Finally, the system positioning accuracy is higher after the debugging and running, which can meet the requirements for embedded industrial robot design.

E-GRAFCET+: An Internet Based Multimedia Tool Refined

The refinement of an existing internet multimedia tool to support teaching/learning activities concerning GRAFCET is reported here. The tool called e-GRAFCET resulted in an updated and improved version called e-GRAFCET+. The overall objective of this internet-based tool is to provide fundamental aspects regarding GRAFCET presented with animated examples, promoting students self-learning. While originally this tool was developed to be used by Portuguese speakers, now it is also available in English. The tool upgrading resulted in the elaboration of a new internet portal, incorporating new features, concerning the site management and question quizzes updating. A very important feature of e-GRACFCET+, is to be prepared to work on most devices regardless of operating systems and screen sizes, such as smart-phones and tablets. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. There is a tailor-made Manufacturing Execution System presented in the paper. The system has been developed and implemented practically by authors. The general idea behind it is explained firstly. A generic structure of Factory Automation system was introduced. Siemens Simatic S7-300 plc controllers were used to implement the idea. The MES software was written in C# software. The approach for plc configuration and programming using Step 7 software was briefly presented. The communication between PC MES software and plcs is based on industrial Ethernet. The main functionalities of the MES system were pointed.

In the development of plc software for automated Production Systems the method copy & paste is commonly used. However, this method leads to various disadvantages. To avoid these disadvantages, a parameter-based concept for planed reuse is presented in this paper. By means of the Siemens plc software of an automated warehouse, the concept is defined and evaluated. In a first step, the plc software is analyzed and reusable parts as well as variation points are identified. Subsequently, it is demonstrated that the warehouse variants can be clearly described by a suitable set of parameters. In a last step the automatic configuration of the plc software by using the identified parameters as well as a Step7 source code template is explained and evaluated.

The use of smart phones for teaching and learning purposes is an increasingly important issue. MIT App-Inventor 2 is presented here as a tool to develop applications for Android mobile systems, with the global aim to improve the connectivity between teachers and students. Two recently developed applications using this technology: Teach2Student and Student2Teach are reported. Teach2Student has two main functions: i) to allow teachers to post their students courses main class's issues;ii) To provide students with specific quizzes. Student2Teach the corresponding students application, is used to visualize the posts and quizzes submitted by teachers. Preliminary results concerning the use of both applications within an industrial automation and control course are presented.

In the paper we describe the control electronics for an industrial test system based on a low cost plc. The developed system is a hydraulic pulse system and it generates series of high pressure hydraulic pulses (max. 200bar) and is based on pneumatic-hydraulic circuits. We describe requirements, an overall concept of the embedded control system, user interface, security features and network connectivity. In the description of the software solution we describe implementation of hierarchical ordered program threads (multithreaded program) and main control state machine. At the conclusion, we describe the calibration method of the system and calibration curves, we present the schematic diagram and a photo of a functional prototype of the system.

This paper presents an experiment concerning the development of two mobile devices applications with the App Inventor 2 for Android operating systems. These applications are intended to support teaching and learning activities in Industrial Automation and Control courses, particularly concerning logic control, logic controller programming and process control. While the reported applications: eLogicum and Automatum are yet in an early development stage, this paper aims to motivate teachers and students to a wider use of mobile devices in the context of university teaching and learning processes. Both applications are reported, focusing in the more relevant development issues concerning the App Inventor 2 use.

Industrial automation is largely based on plc-based control systems. plcs are today mostly programmed in the languages of the IEC 61131 standard which are not ready to meet the new challenges of widely distributed automation systems. Currently, different solutions are available from industry and research: an extension of IEC 61131 which includes object oriented programming, the adoption of the new standard IEC 61499 or the implementation of supervisory control. All these solutions present different problems which are briefly recalled in the paper. To overcome some of these problems in this paper it is shown that a novel approach based on supervisory control and IEC 61131 can be immediately used to meet the new requirements.

A generic, self-explanatory model for programming devices and machines is presented. The machine model defines both the structural composition and its behavior using a set of four visual languages. In this paper, the basic symbols for the four languages are presented. The symbols are positioned according to predefined layout rules to specify the machine features. Each symbol is designed to represent its meaning as directly as possible. The underlying data structure of the machine model is also described. The model can be used to acquire knowledge related to machine development and be reused by enthusiasts and students.

In the paper there are discussed benefits of using the block-oriented approach in programming the plc controller. As an example there is taken a model of traffic junction with multiple traffic flow (including the railway crossing). The model is described and control system structure is presented. There are discussed principles of block-oriented programming approach in Ladder Diagram (LAD) language. Benefits of using this technique are shown and example is discussed.
