The paper presents the results of empirical tests, which examine the algorithm of failure detection in transmission line or network node in dual bus system. The use of simulation software allows control engineers to design better solutions, reduce development costs and avoid possible critical errors in the process to be controlled. In addition, simulation software can be used in education to provide students with realistic problems. Although there are a host of different solutions for continuous systems, there are few simulators of industrial processes focused on automation technologies. In this work, we present a new 3D simulation software of industrial systems for programmable logic controller (plc) educational exercises. The application includes a physics simulation engine based on videogame technology, it can communicate with plcs using the OPC protocol, and allows the student to test their designs in real time. Moreover, an extension of the application enables the automated assessment of student work, by operating in conjunction with the Goodle GMS e-learning platform. The simulation software has been used in two process automation courses during 2011 and 2012.

Our goal is to improve the handling of new possibilities given through object-oriented extension of the IEC 61131-3 programming techniques. We already know that modeling of structure is a challenge for automation engineers and often neglected. In an interdisciplinary research team we examined whether the modeling order with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) class diagram for the structural aspect and the UML state chart diagram for the behavioral aspects cause significant differences in model quality. Additionally, often occurring errors were analyzed to find hindering factors in modeling and to learn what was misunderstood. Therefore we combine usability aspects, notational and procedural aspects in plc programming with learning and educational aspects to find how education and application of modeling notations could be improved.

Many teaching institutions worldwide are working on distance learning applications. In this field, remote laboratories are enabling intensive use of university facilities, while aiding the work of professors and students. The present paper introduces a platform designed to be used in industrial automation practical work. The platform is communicable through the Internet, includes programmable logic controllers that can be programmed with the open software CoDeSys, and has various sensors and actuators used in industrial installations. The various experimental stations of the platform, and the proposed laboratory exercises are described. The results of having used the platform with students are discussed.

This article deals with the development of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition SCADA system to be used in a flexible manufacturing cell for educational purposes in different automation engineering fields (SCADA development, plc programming and industrial communications). When dealing with industrial communications or plc programming the SCADA is employed as a supervision tool. in the other hand, when teaching SCADA systems the application will be developed by the students and the SCADA presented in this article is employed as a model. To cope with this, a task-oriented model of the control system provides control code, data mapping and generating plc code according to assembly sequences. The model is defined with the unit functions which can describe the complex assembly process with function elements. Task-oriented model also means the assigning and combining of unit function to generate the plc code for assembly process. The Artificial Intelligence method executes knowledge processing for generating the plc program. This approach of task-oriented method supports the flexible programming with high level of reusability, expandability, modifiability, and productivity.

The international standard IEC 61131-3, which supports Brad Cox' concept of "Software-ICs" for industrial control programming, is increasingly being used in safety-related application domains. They include safety-instrumented functions, such as burner management, emergency shutdown and gas leak detection, but also complex automation processes controlling, e.g., chemical production plants. For such highly dependable applications, code inspection and testing, the predominant quality assurance techniques used in practice today, are, in general, not sufficient to demonstrate the functional correctness and safety of an application. This paper presents a theorem prover-based verification technique as a supplementary validation measure. The verification task is separated into the a priori verification of reusable function blocks, which are usually maintained in domain-specific libraries, and a separate compositional proof of individual application programs. Core concepts of the standardized languages, their semantic embedding into higher order logic, and the verification approach are illustrated with a small example. Some design ideas for a verification tool usable by automation engineers and safety licensing authorities conclude the contribution. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
