Programmable Logic Controllers (plcs) are crucial in industrial automation, making proficiency in their use an essential skill for engineering students. Choosing the right platform for teaching plc programming in universities, however, may be challenging. This paper summarizes, compares and evaluates various software platforms used in universities. The leading platforms could be identified based on a defined criteria framework encompassing cost, accessibility, learning curve, industry relevance, supported languages, and additional features. Through detailed examination and discussion, the platforms that offer the most efficient and effective learning experience for plc programming education in universities could be identified. This selection should further be justified by considering additional factors like instructor experience, student preferences, institutional support, and geographical location. This paper not only highlights the strengths and weaknesses of different platforms but also provides valuable insights and recommendations for universities seeking to optimize their plc programming curriculum. The findings hold the potential to enhance the quality of plc programming education, better preparing students for successful careers in automation-driven industries.

In machine and plant automation model-driven programming of Programmable Logic Controller (plc) software is becoming an alternative to the state-of-the-art programming. As part of the related work the authors first present the results of a previously finished project on model-driven approaches for Multi Agent System (MAS) plc programming, in particular using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML). A tool supported procedure model was developed that assists automation engineers implementing MAS in order to enhance reliability of the plants as well as reusability of implemented modules. Subsequently, related work on the evaluation of plc programming approaches is discussed and the qualitative evaluation study for our newly developed procedure model is presented. In the last section, we present the study results and discuss our findings and their meaning for future developments and experiments.

Industrial automation plants are controlled essentially by plc-based control systems. plcs are today mostly programmed in the languages of the IEC 61131-3 standard which are not ready to meet the new challenges of widely distributed automation systems. Currently, different solutions are under development from industry and research: an extension of IEC 61131-3 which includes object oriented programming;the adoption of the new standard IEC 61499 which makes the software execution event-based instead of scan-cycle based as in IEC 61131-3 standard. In this paper it is shown how object oriented programming implicitly makes event-based the plc software behavior. Moreover, it is shown how supervisory control can help in designing correct software in this context.

Lossless data exchange is one of the recent investigated paths for engineering process improvement with respect to engineering process quality and efficiency. AutomationML is one data exchange format in a broad range of modern XML based data formats developed for the improvement of engineering processes of manufacturing systems. In this paper the applicability of AutomationML is proven for transferring plc programming and virtual commissioning relevant information within the engineering process.

Industrial automation is largely based on plc-based control systems. plcs are today mostly programmed in the languages of the IEC 61131 standard which are not ready to meet the new challenges of widely distributed automation systems. Currently, different solutions are available from industry and research: an extension of IEC 61131 which includes object oriented programming, the adoption of the new standard IEC 61499 or the implementation of supervisory control. All these solutions present different problems which are briefly recalled in the paper. To overcome some of these problems in this paper it is shown that a novel approach based on supervisory control and IEC 61131 can be immediately used to meet the new requirements.

This paper presents an approach to teach programmable logic controller (plc) programming and industrial automation to students in Mechatronics Engineering program at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. The first course, i.e. plc programming, introduces texted languages, such as instruction list and structured text, according to IEC61131-3 standard so that students can learn a fundamental concept about plc hardware and software using the standards-based programming languages. The advanced course, Industrial Automation, focuses on teaching students the sequence control concept and problem solving strategy, where Sequential Function Chart, Ladder Diagram and Function Block Diagram are used to put the design of industrial manufacturing assembly line into operation. The classes have been taught in project based approach and the kinesthetic learning style has been adopted throughout all laboratory sections. From students' comments, the teaching approach was very successful. By the end of the academic year, students have developed their own various projects using the knowledge they learned from plc programming and Industrial Automation courses. Some of the projects have been further advanced as a student research paper published at the college technology day conference, ASEE regional conferences or the Latin American Caribbean Conference for Engineering and Technology. Moreover, these courses are intended to enhance career opportunities for the students in Mechatronics Engineering program. Currently some of our graduates have chosen their careers in the area of plc programming and industrial automation. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2015.

In China, the number of the power station increases quickly. According to the information from the Internet, From 2001 to August 2005, State Environmental Protection Administration has approved 472 thermal power projects, and the installed capacity is as much as 344382 *** which, 135 thermal power projects are approved in 2001, the installed capacity is as much as 107590 MW, 207% more than last year;213 thermal power projects are approved From January to August in 2005, the installed capacity is as much as 168546 MW, 420% more than last *** these power stations all come online, Chinese installed capacity will be as much as 5.82 billion KW, 145% more than 2000. In December 2006, the growth of the power stations keeps high *** same month, the whole country’s generating capacity was 2266 billion kilowatt-hour, 15.5% more than last *** the rise of the winter electricity consumption, the generating capacity of power projects increased *** genearating capacity of power projects in December was 10.9% more than last *** January to December in 2006 the whole country’s generating capacity was 23009 billion kilowatt-hour, 15.08% more than last *** January to October in 2007 the whole country’s generating capacity was 21756 billion kilowatt-hour, 16.04% more than last *** generating capacity in August had the largest number, which was 2390 billion kilowatt-hour, 10.19% more than last year.
