This paper demonstrates a universal digital signal processing (computer) application for adaptive polarization mode compensation (pmd) compensation utilizing GTPSO algorithm in optical transmission systems. It is significant and challenging to establish an effective logic control compensator due to the time-varying and statistical properties of pmd. especially in highspeed optical fiber communication systems. We designed a low power-consume computer-based integrated control system to complete first-order pmd and second-order pmd compensation. The searching process and the tracking process for automatic PM D compensation could be completed in less than 10ms and 1ms.

The planar lightwave circuit (PLC) on silicon substrate offers a promising on-chip integrated solution to polarization-mode dispersion (pmd) compensation for long haul high speed communications. A novel cascaded PLC based pmd compensator is proposed in this paper and a detailed statistical analysis of pmd generated by cascaded PLC circuits is presented. Using Gisin and Pellaux's approach the distributions of first-order pmd produced by various multiple-stage PLC circuits were obtained by Monte Carlo simulation with respect to the phase shift introduced by heating elements in the circuits. The generated pmd was compared with a standard Maxwell distribution and that of a 12-stage nonlinear crystal based pmd compensator. It was found that a 3-stage cascaded PLC circuit yields a performance close to that of the crystal-based pmd compensator, while with a significant reduction in packaged size and enhancement in stability.

Tracking and separation of time-varying principal states of polarization in optical fiber link for first-order pmd compensation and its filter-dependent performance

We propose a simple method for tracking and separating time-varying principal states of polarization (PSP) occurring in a fiber-optic transmission link with polarization mode dispersion (pmd) for use in pmd compensation. The proposed method uses as a feedback monitoring signal the bandpass-filtered RF power at bit-rate frequency for NRZ signal format. We demonstrated the operating principle of the method through theoretical simulation and experiment using an automatically adaptive pmd compensator employing a single polarization beam splitter (PBS). The effects of electrical filtering on the PSP tracking performance were also investigated by using three types of filters, i.e., a low-pass filter (LPF), a band-pass filter (BPF), and a high-pass filter (HPF). The simulation results showed that only a BPF centered at bit-rate frequency was found to allow for tracing and separation of two PSPs via PBS. The proposed method, when applied to a conventional pmd compensator that alternately controls a polarization controller and a delay line, enables separation of PSP control from differential-group-delay (DGD) control, thus allowing fast tracking of rapidly changing PSP in a pmd-impaired optical fiber link and reducing compensation time. The impact of XPM on the 1(st)-order pmd compensator is numerically simulated for a two-channel WDM system with the bit rate in each channel of 40-Gbit/s. Simulation results show that a 1(st)-order pmdC does not change the distribution of the remaining EOP in a single channel system;but in a WDM system, the EOP distribution will disperses over the whole EOP range and the occurrence probability of larger EOPs increases heavily due to the XPM effect when a 1(st)-order pmd compensator is used to compensate for the DGD of the preceding fiber link. Furthermore, in WDM systems, the larger the input average power in the pump channel, the severer the impact of XPM on I (st)-order pmd compensation is. When the XPM-inducing input average power reaches 0dBm, the impact of XPM on the 1(st)-order pmd compensator is visible.

An adaptive double-stage pmd compensator capable of compensating first- and second-order pmd simultaneously is experimentally researched by introducing genetic algorithm for the first time. In order to verify the effect of the double-stage pmd compensator, an experimental optical transmission system at a bit rate of 10 Gbit/s is setup. In experiments, degree of polarization (DOP) of received optical signal is adopted for pmd monitoring. Experimental results show that genetic algorithm is effective and powerful in first- and second-pmd compensation. The DOP of received optical signals after pmd compensation can reach a value larger than 0.97 within 180 milliseconds during which genetic algorithm runs 50 iterations. pmd measurement indicates that the first- and second-order pmd in transmission link can simultaneously reach the minima after pmd compensation at the operation wavelength.

We completed a 5-degree of freedom pmd compensator with a novel feedback control algorithm. The tracking algorithm, which successfully solves the problem of easily been trapped into local optima is adopted in the tracking course with no visible worsening of the feedback signal in the compensation process. Long time testing shows good performance of our compensator for fast tracking and compensation.

We used UV laser to write Bragg gratings on the polarization maintaining fiber (PMF). Because of the high-birefringence of the fiber, the Bragg wavelength of the grating on the two polarization axes was different. So that it could introduce great polarization mode dispersion (pmd). When the input was adapted to the axis of the grating, it can serve as the polarization compensation. We measured the polarization of the grating at the end of the article.
