Discusses the use of original modifications of Householder transformations for solving eigenvalue and singular value problems. Shared memory parallel computing systems are choosen as target computing systems. The proposed modifications allow to increase the computational performance due to the efficient use of cache memory and parallel execution of some transformation steps, which are traditionally performed serial. Mathematical descriptions of modified transformations are given, as well as software implementation issues and experimental results.

Influence of Organizational Structure and Administrative Processes on the performance of State-Level Malaria programs in Nigeria

Studies have found links between organizational structure and performance of public organizations. Considering the wide variation in uptake of malaria interventions and outcomes across Nigeria, this exploratory study examined how differences in administrative location (a dimension of organizational structure), the effectiveness of administrative processes (earmarking and financial control, and communication), leadership (use of data in decision making, state ownership, political will, and resourcefulness), and external influences (donor influence) might explain variations in performance of state malaria programs in Nigeria. We hypothesized that states with malaria program administrative structures closer to state governors will have greater access to resources, greater political support, and greater administrative flexibility and will therefore perform better. To assess these relationships, we conducted semistructured interviews across three states with different program administrative locations: Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, and Niger. Sixty-five participants were identified through a snowballing approach. Data were analyzed using a thematic framework. State program performance was assessed across three malaria service delivery domains (prevention, diagnosis, and treatment) using indicators from Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 2008 and 2013. Cross River State was best performing based on 2013 prevention data (usage of insecticide-treated bednets), and Niger State ranked highest in diagnosis and treatment and showed the greatest improvement between 2008 and 2013. We found that organizational structure (administrative location) did not appear to be determinative of performance but rather that the effectiveness of administrative processes (earmarking and financial control), strong leadership (assertion of state ownership and resourcefulness of leaders in overcoming bottlenecks), and donor influences differed across the three assessed states and may expla

Economic pressures for public health and human services systems to control budgets are increasing the need for demonstrating value of support services provided to persons with intellectual disabilities. In this article, we build from earlier work that presented a method for assessing goal attainment to expand the study of goal characteristics as a means to gain an improved understanding of individual outcomes and service performance. The study results suggest a positive relationship between targeting intentional skill teaching in person-centered planning and service delivery and increasing the ability of individuals to live more independently in communities with decreased levels of paid staff support. Additional areas meriting further exploration are presented and implications for current system trends are discussed.

Power optimization of multi-threaded parallel applications is necessary to achieve good performance on multi-core processors while saving power. Certain threads wait for other threads due to synchronization. These threads are critical in full program performance. Identifying these threads can reveal power optimization opportunities for software and hardware designers. In this paper, we propose a metric to determine critical threads. Our proposed method combines Instructions Per Cycle (IPC) of a thread and sum of IPCs of all co-running threads within a time quanta. We present a low power hardware based technique to calculate scores in order to determine critical threads. We use our score metric to create stacks that break total execution time into each thread's score components which makes it visually easier to determine optimization opportunities. Asymmetric multiprocessors have been proposed to scale the frequency by exploiting the stacks to achieve power optimization without losing much performance. To validate our proposed method, we used gem5 simulator to design an asymmetric multi-core processor and performed different multi-threaded parallel applications from the SPLASH2 benchmark. By applying asymmetric frequency scaling directed by our proposed metric, we achieved 28.13% savings in average power consumption with a maximum of 7.1% performance loss.

Massive dataset sizes can make visualization difficult or impossible. One solution to this problem is to divide a dataset into smaller pieces and then stream these pieces through memory, running algorithms on each piece. This paper presents a modular data-flow visualization system architecture for culling and prioritized data streaming. This streaming architecture improves program performance both by discarding pieces of the input dataset that are not required to complete the visualization, and by prioritizing the ones that are. The system supports a wide variety of culling and prioritization techniques, including those based on data value, spatial constraints, and occlusion tests. Prioritization ensures that pieces are processed and displayed progressively based on an estimate of their contribution to the resulting image. Using prioritized ordering, the architecture presents a progressively rendered result in a significantly shorter time than a standard visualization architecture. The design is modular, such that each module in a user-defined data-flow visualization program can cull pieces as well as contribute to the final processing order of pieces. In addition, the design is extensible, providing an interface for the addition of user-defined culling and prioritization techniques to new or existing visualization modules.

Studying on integration is one of the major ways to research organization in large-scale complex program, yet organization integration has largely underdeveloped in the program area. Based on the existing research in different fields, this paper provides practitioners with an understanding of the importance of organization integration. Through a literature review, a framework of integration mechanism is proposed, which integrates four elements, i.e., organizational ability, structure, relationship and shared value. Collectively, we present five hypothesis of interdependence between organization integration and program performance, and discuss the possibility and measures to verify the hypothesis.

The special cluster of articles in this issue of Academic Psychiatry [1-9] on the Psychiatry Milestones introduces and overviews the accomplishments of the Psychiatry Milestones Working Group and allows us to appreciate the trajectory of the Next Accreditation System (NAS) of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) [10], as it applies to general psychiatry. Psychiatric education is evolving. In 1997, the ACGME initiated the Outcome Project for Graduate Medical Education (GME) following the Institute of Medicine\'s attention to safety and quality. The Outcome Project began a developmental approach to residency and fellowship training, with emphasis on trainee, and program performance [11]. The ACGME established a competency-based education and required assessment of individual proficiency within each of the six core competencies [12].

Typing has long been studied in psychology and HCI, and strong cognitive models for transcription typing exist. The goal of the present research was to test if there is any correlation between students' keystroking speed and performance while they are programming. We present the results from two studies with computer science students conducted in different contexts. Keystroke timings were recorded while they worked on Java and Ada source code. Quality of their programming work was measured mainly in terms of completeness. In the controlled experiment that lasted six hours, 39 students undertook three change tasks on a 6000 LOC Java application. In the field study, data was collected over 6 weeks from 141 students while they worked unsupervised on Ada programming in first year laboratories. In both cases there were highly significant (P=0.001), moderately strong, negative correlations between speed and coding performance. With additional development, these techniques may have promise for user modelling and assessment as well as in educational diagnostics.
