Modeling and Evaluating a Cache System in ICN Routers Using a programmable Switch and Computers

Information-centric networking (ICN) is one of promising networking architectures to replace IP because its notable feature, in-network caching, is expected to reduce about a one-third of the forever increasing Internet traffic. However, the existing ICN router implementations with caches cannot come with the rapid increase of terabit-scale network bandwidth. An implementation on hardware-based router platforms like programmable switches is promising, but due to their limited memory capacity, cache stores should be located at external devices like computers. This makes packets being sent from and to the switch to cache them at the computers, which increases the number of ports for connecting them called external ports. That is, the number of ports for connecting the switch and external networks is reduced, and as a result, the packet forwarding rate is degraded. We analytically and experimentally show that a naive implementation decreases both the packet forwarding rate and the number external ports to almost half in the condition that the cache hit ratio is about 30%. To solve this bottleneck, this paper proposes the two algorithms, the cache admission and lazy response ones, to reduce the number of packets sent between the switch and the computers. In order to validate them, we evaluate the forwarding rate improvement by developing an analytical model and a prototype ICN router implementation on a programmable switch with computers. The evaluation shows that the proposed algorithms almost double the forwarding rate compared to a naive implementation without the proposed algorithms under realistic request patterns to data packets. The paper's contributions are two-fold: realistic implementation and comprehensive performance evaluation. First, we implement a terabit-class ICN router with cache functionality on a Tofino switch which provides 3.2 terabit/s (Tbps) forwarding rate with two pipelines. As a compact solution for GNSS antenna diversity in cars a compact diversity circuit is presented with integrated logics which is able to act independent from the receiver. The circuit enables a low-loss signal combination and phase alignment for two independent antenna paths. The function of the circuit is shown by way of simulations and laboratory measurements of a fabricated compact functional demonstrator. In real field measurements it is further shown that a significant increase in GNSS performance and especially in position accuracy is achieved.

A novel, transistor level PID (proportional-integrating-derivative) controller is proposed that may be easily coupled with various AI algorithms responsible for adjusting its main factors. In our work we focus on a discrete-time digital approach, as it facilities realization a flexible and programmable structure that can be quickly re-configured depending on varying environment conditions. One of the novelties of the proposed solution is its parallel and asynchronous structure that requires only simple 2-phases clock. Each of the P, I and D blocks is realized as a separate channel with its own multi -bit multiplier, a summing circuit and a short delay line (in case of I and D blocks). The circuit features small chip area. For the input signals, and the coefficients of the controller being encoded as 8-bit signals the number of transistors does not exceed 13,000, which translates into the chip area not exceeding 0.1 mm2 in the CMOS 130 nm technology. Data rate of the controller can achieve 200-330 MSamples/s, with power dissipation not exceeding 1 mW. The proposed solution is suitable for miniaturized microsystems, for example high performance MEMS devices, in which small sizes and high data rate become very important features. This paper presents the design of a digital CMOS integrated circuit implementing a fuzzy logic controller. The proposed architecture is suitable for serial processing of membership functions and fuzzy rules. The parameterised VHDL model allows to synthesise the programmable circuit of the required size for a particular application. The impact of selected model parameters on speed, occupied area and power dissipation is also discussed.

A low-power 20-bit digital shift register designed for the phase-locked loop (PLL) is presented. The serial-input-parallel-output (SIPO) and the parallel-input-serial-output (PISO) uniformly adopt the same D flip-flop circuit to maintain propagation delay in each stage and improve component usage rate. The proposed shift register integrated into a Ku-band PLL is implemented in the 130nm IHP SG13S process. The simulated operating frequency can speed up to 200MHz data rate, and its power consumption is 147 µW at a 1.2V supply voltage. The chip size of the proposed shift register was 7692¼m 2 .

This paper describes a smart parking system using the Ladder Diagram programming language that can be used by students to understand the principles of a process automation. It is an educational platform that gives information about what elements are part of such programs, how to implement them using a programmable logic controller, how to create a Logical Diagram / Organization Chart and simulate the program. This type of application approach fits well due to the reorganization of the educational teaching system that has been a great challenge for many teachers during the pandemic, not only regarding the teaching curriculum, but also regarding teaching methods. Also, because of the constantly growing digitalization, virtual laboratories and electronic learning platforms must become frequent teaching methods, especially in higher education systems.
