Tune and verification of control system algorithms for offshore installation operations involving complex and advanced machinery and difficult due to its safety factor. It may be also very costly or even impossible to establish certain test conditions in the physical process environment of the control system. To solve this problem, the Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation (HILS) can be regarded as an effective method for testing the control system prior to its final development. The sophisticated FEELS is composed of a control system and a HIL simulator which is a simulation model of the offshore plant developed by software. In this study, we focus on the application of HILS for a heave compensator which is used to keep the position or the lowing speed of a lifting object. This study contains three components. Firstly, a physics-based analysis component is used to develop a simulation model of an offshore plant, that is, a HIL simulator. Secondly, the programmable logic controller (PLC) component, that is a control system, is used to regulate the offshore plant model, including a proportional-integral-derivative (PED) feedback controller which aims to control the position or lowering speed of the lifting object. Thirdly, an interface component is developed to communicate the data between the HIL simulator and the control system in real-time. To evaluate the applicability of HILS for a heave compensator, it was applied to an example of an offshore support vessel (OSV) crane. In order to verify the control system for the crane operation in case of heave stabilization of the lifting object, two simulation processes had been established with both a software PLC (software-in-the loop) and a hardware PLC (hardware-in-the-loop). HILS makes it possible to test the heave compensator without building costly prototypes and without endangering natural environment.

We propose that the domain of a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) can be characterised by: 1. the class of environments in which systems developed in the language are expected to operate;and 2. the class of properties which such systems are expected to possess. The design of DSLs should therefore include the development of a proof system that eases the task of proving the properties in the class identified for the anticipated operating environments. We develop these ideas in the context of industrial computing systems by presenting a semantics and proof system for a language based on IEC 1131-3, the international standard programming language for programmable controllers. Of particular significance in this example is the use of a diagrammatic representation and the development of a proof system for a class of invariance properties that requires only local knowledge of the structure of diagrams.

Some Brazilian regions have an agricultural vocation and are undergoing on a significant industrialization process, which is mainly caused by the installation of biofuel industries. Therefore, demand for agricultural and industrial automation will be great in the next years. The aim of this study is to develop a low cost small module (hardware card), for use in the automation of simple machines and equipments. This programmable logic controller (PLC) will be part of an open platform that also contains a free software tool for programming PLC in C language, and an online tutorial with detailed instructions about building and programming the system. Thus, students and professionals can automate machinery and equipment in a simple and low cost way. This article shows the electronic design of the PLC, its programming and tests results of the breadboard setup.

Tidal stream is the flow of water due to the rise and fall of the tide. Those flows have the advantage in that they are predictable as to their times of occurrence and to their rates of flow. However, installation and maintenance of subsea turbines is both difficult and expensive. For those reasons it is necessary to implement robust condition monitoring. The purpose of condition monitoring is to predict maintenance issues before they become catastrophic. The aim of this paper is to explore the feasibility of capturing and analyzing condition monitoring data using a programmable controller (PLC) with associated software and displaying that data and its relevance on a graphic user interface (GUI). For this purpose an experimental test rig was constructed. Four turbine process variables (PV) were captured, their values displayed and analyzed. The conclusion of this experimental work is that the feasibility of deploying PLC technology for condition monitoring of subsea power generators shows promise and further work in this area is proposed.

Increasing efforts are being made in securing the communication infrastructure used in electric power systems. On the surface, this should greatly reduce the chances of successfully executing the type of coordinated and distributed cyber attacks necessary to cause large-scale failures. However, existing communications security schemes in power control systems only consider explicit communications. In this paper, we show that there is a rich set of covert communication channels available to attackers for use in coordinating large scale attacks against power grids. Specifically, we present PHYCO, a novel covert channel that leverages physical substrates, e.g., line loads, within a power system, to transmit information between compromised device controllers. Using PHYCO, two compromised controllers that are miles apart can coordinate their efforts by manipulating relays to modify the power network's topology. This can be done without requiring the use of any explicit communication channels, e.g., power line communications, and can evade intrusion detection sensors aimed at overt traffic. We have evaluated PHYCO using real-world programmable logic controllers on a realistic simulated power grid. Our results show that PHYCO can bypass existing intrusion detection sensors as well as physical inspections by carefully crafting covert communications to have minimal exterior consequences within normal operating thresholds.

For covering the real-time characteristics of an automation system during model-based design it is essential to model not only the function but also the behaviour of the control programs running on a real-time controller. This paper introduces an approach to the modelling and evaluation of the functional and time behaviour of programmable Logic controllers (PLC) on model level. The control algorithm consisting of UML statecharts is extended with an execution model of the controller which is also given as a statechart. The approach is integrated into a model-based design system for industrial control systems focusing on the field of production systems. An example will be employed to illustrate the benefits of a model-based design system which does incorporate real-time aspects of the controller.

programmable Logic controllers (PLC) have been used in industrial environment to control several different tasks. Such devices can be programmed using one of the languages specified in the IEC 61131-3 standard, such as Ladder or Functional Logic Diagrams. PLCs are widely used in a number of critical environment, such as in the extraction processes of oil and gas. For this reason, systems running on PLCs requires a high level of reliability. In general, it is necessary to perform formal verification to achieve such a level of reliability. Formal behavioral models of the system are built to simulate and verify desired properties. Among many available formalisms, Petri Nets (PN) have been used successfully although the task of modeling demands extra time in the development process. Aiming to amortize time invested in formal verification, this paper presents a method to automatically obtain formal models, described with a class of PN called Coloured Petri Nets, directly from Ladder diagrams. With these models in hand, it is not only possible to simulate the system but it is also possible to apply automatic verification techniques.

This work presents the design of a lightweight, low-end, virtually zero-cost on-line passive testing technology (Tiny TTCN-inspired Testing Tool) that is complementary to other, well established testing frameworks. A tester is built around an Arduino-class microcontroller and is programmed in a test language that re-creates the basic semantics and look-and-feel of the standardized test language TTCN-3 (Testing and Test Control Notation). It is intended for rapid prototyping and as a one-off development platform for the validation of IoT-class distributed systems involving humans-in-the-loop, especially for long-term unobtrusive supervision of in-the-wild behaviour change experiments in an instrumented home/work facility. To justify feasibility claims, selected implementation details are also reported.

Due to the rapid growth in LSI (large-scale integration) technology, it is now/lossible to consider implementing a discrete (digital) single-loop programmable controller. This paper discusses some software aspects of digital single-loop controllers for i j-dustrial processes. Based on the S-shaped response pattern typical in many industrial processes, a simple algorithm for a finite-time settling controller with an observer is proposed. © 1975 by ASME.
