Many academic researchers have been working on the problem of how to improve industrial logic design. The problem that many are trying to solve is the perceived inefficiency of the current methods, which use primitive, low-level design languages, practically no logic reuse, and are very time consuming. To solve these problems researchers have focused on methods which can be verified against a known specification language, or which can be automatically generated from a specification. This work has generally been done with a minimal understanding of what the current logic design methods actually are. In this work, we present the results of an observational study of the current methods of creating control logic. We find that the current specifications are generally informal and loosely defined, and that the typical logic designer is responsible for determining the details of system behavior, anticipating potential problems, and coordinating with other designers. This is a larger range of activities than generally addressed by logic design schemes focused on verification or automatic logic generation.

The tool should be suitable for the systems with programmable controllers and should be based on the international standards IEC 61131 and IEC 61499. The general framework was developed at Department of Measurement and Control, VSB-TU Ostrava. Model-based predictive control (MBPC) is one of the first and most popular non-standard control methods. Although MBPC has around 30 year history, it was usually implemented in industrial control systems using PC computers. Technological progress made control equipment more powerful last years. Modem programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are now capable to run more computation consuming algorithms. The paper presents an application of one of the commercially used MBPC control methods - Predictive Functional Control (PFC). The standard first-order nonlinear system with polynomial approximation is proposed as internal model. The application was made for flow control of the fluid in the installation of chemical reactor. Presented application shows that nonlinear control can be necessary even at a very low level in the control hierarchy.

The contribution describes a distributed control system design method that is developed at Department of Measurement and Control, TU Ostrava. The method is focused in distributed control systems with programmable controllers and with industrial networks. The method is based on international standards IEC 61131 and IEC 61499. An approach described in the paper is advantageous for design of a new control of a new technology but especially for realizing of a new control for an existing plant. The paper describes microcontroller simulator with flexible definition of system configuration and simulation strategies. An important feature of the simulator is the possibility of defining complex network of devices co-operating with the microcontroller chip. These devices can be defined at various abstraction levels as program objects. Test stimuli and system behaviour probing are also programmed in a friendly way. The simulator is supported with various statistical modules, which can characterise operational profile of the application, resource usage etc. Capabilities of the simulator are illustrated for car immobilizer.

There exist many ways, how to control dc motor by PLC. One of them is the 7MM432 screw-in module developed by Bernecker & Rainer company especially for drive control. This work deals with development of special function blocks for position and speed control to be used with the 7MM432 module. Speed control is realized as a closed loop control. PI controller is used in this case. Position control is realized as an open loop control. Digital encoder output is used to evaluate the control deviation.
