This paper proposes a programming class for young children. In order to reduce the burden on teachers and attract students' interest, a robot teaching assistant is used to explain programming knowledge, verify and run programs. Different from writing programs on a computer, the physical board programming is employed to develop logical thinking of young children and prevent them from the vision harm of facing computer screens for a long time and the lack of reality from immersion in the virtual world. Based on the knowledge points of programming, we have designed a course with 16 lessons. The course has been successfully applied in many kindergartens and elementary schools. We use the questionnaires for students and teachers to evaluate the course and the experimental results show that it is effective.

My research approaches the learning and teaching of a programming language from a natural language perspective. In particular, it focuses on code reading aspects of programming, such as reading exercises and the naming of variables, as prior research suggests these topics might not get enough dedicated attention in educational settings. Ultimately, I aim to encourage discussion among researchers and practitioners that focuses on how to include valuable training in reading code and code quality. I believe that a focus on these elements would increase the accessibility of programming for both students and teachers.

The programming education is very important in technical colleges, universities and enterprises. We have developed a problem solving environment (PSE) for the education and learning support: TSUNA-TASTE [T. Teramoto, et al., J. Convergence Information Tech., Vol. 5, no. 4, pp. 216-224, 2010]. The TSUNA-TASTE system has a framework to make various programming systems. In this paper we propose and develop a new subsystem of a Procon(Proguraming Contest) Competition Section in Japan. The TSUNA-TASTE may open a new possibility of helpful computer language education.

programming students often show a reduced level of self-regulation of learning (SRL), which is known to impact their academic success. Interventions can be designed to assist in stimulating SRL, but achieving it is a challenging process for educational stakeholders. In this work, we propose a guideline that aims to support the construction of interventions to foster SRL competence in programming education. The guideline was built upon the collected evidence from a systematic literature review that identified features used to aid effective SRL interventions in the context of programming education. Fifteen studies were analyzed, and the results show the feasibility of several features to support programming learning and SRL development.

With the growing interest in programming skills in society, programming will inevitably become part of national curricula. The research presented on this poster aims to address programming for everyone and hopes to contribute to the accessibility of programming lessons for both students and teachers with various backgrounds. In order to do so, we approach the learning and teaching of a programming language from a natural language perspective, and in particular, we focus on reading code, including one of the most important programming concepts: variables. During the last decades, the number of research projects on reading code has increased. For example, research on reading and explaining code has shown that code reading skills correlate to code writing skills [4, 5, 11, 12, 15]. Neuroscientific results indicate that language-related brain networks are possibly more important when programming than brain networks related to problem-solving or mathematics [7, 8, 13]. In addition, classroom experiments demonstrate how training on technical reading abilities can improve programming skills [6], and how reading code aloud, a strategy derived from natural language learning, helps with remembering syntax, which is an element of coding that beginners often struggle with [9, 14]. Research has also shown the importance of variables in reading and understanding code. It is commonly accepted that meaningful identifier names (or ‘mnemonic’ names) help readers understand code more easily than when abbreviations or (random) letters are used [2, 10], although it has also been found that such names can be misleading if they wrongly represent their contents or purpose [1, 3]. The question still remains what is “good” variable naming for learning to program. Existing research on variable naming usually focuses on understanding code or assessing the readability of code. We described a new approach to solving the problem of teaching first year software development, using web-based multimedia learning objects (LOs), which include student interaction, animation and self-assessment. A variety of evaluation techniques have been applied, including student questionnaires and interviews and server-side tracking. Results from the first semester are very encouraging and student performance has improved.

Software and IT infrastructure keeps changing the way we live and work, but not necessarily for the better for all of us. Considering the implications of software on our society, and the industry's expectations towards computing graduates, it appears natural to address social and ethical competencies within computing curricula. However, this is not necessarily the case in German computing education. Due to this desideratum, this paper addresses the role of ethical guidelines and social responsibility in programming education in contrast to industry expectations. Expected competencies in programming education and ethics modules of CS study programs were identified by a secondary analysis of available data. The present work also gathered and qualitatively analyzed job advertisements with regard to expected competencies. The results (1) illustrate the lack of correspondence with what is expected in educational settings and the profession, and (2) outline implications for a socially responsible programming education. These findings will support educators in developing competency-based pedagogical approaches to address socially responsible learning objectives in future programming courses and CS study programs.

Teaching computer programming language remotely presents particular difficulties due to its requirement for abstract and logical thinking. There is a dearth of research specifically examining the potential factors that determine student performance when distance self-learning is conducted for programming language education. This study aims to determine the influencing factors to conduct successful programming education on distance self-learning to help novice students effectively. The study is underlined by a concept map-based approach. A quasi-experimental approach was used to collect data from seventy-eight students. By utilizing factor analysis, this study proposes nine determinant factors of distance self-learning performance, namely educational architecture, knowledgeability, expectation insight, engagement tools, good organization, technological accessibility, assignment familiarity, advantageous tool, and assistance feature. Various programming languages have been used in education during the last 50 years. In this study, we investigate their popularity measured with the number of dedicated scientific publications. While some of the findings could be expected, some are far from predictable. Also interesting are the indicated differences between the presented results and the general popularity of languages.

A Serious game for programming in higher education

programming is a highly difficult skill which is a constituent of many undergraduate programmes at Higher education (HE) level. With the advancement of games technology there is an increasing opportunity for educators to provide innovative assessment tools for students on their courses which are highly immersive and graphically indicative of the times. This could potentially be in a supplementary capacity or to a greater extent inextricably linked to the learning outcomes and assessment outcomes. Notably serious games and Games-Based Learning (GBL) have received high levels of attention from educationalists due to being motivational, novel learning approaches. This paper will outline two empirical studies conducted to develop a game to teach programming at HE level. The first study will gauge the acceptability of a computer game for teaching programming and formulating content integration development requirements. The second study will outline the evaluation of the developed game being placed in a module as a formative assessment tool to assist learners to revise for their formal class test. Study one showed that acceptability of the game was high with 61 participants completing an acceptability/content integration questionnaire. The game was designed to consolidate knowledge on rudimentary and advanced programming concepts, data structures and algorithms. 48 participants evaluated the game in study two with the results generally indicating that they enjoyed playing the game as a revision alternative with 14% of participants rating it as very effective and 51% of participants as effective for allowing them to prepare for their class test. The majority of participants also believed that games could be utilised in a formative and summative assessment capacity on courses for independent study. © 2024
