This Innovative Practice Full Paper presents an approach to improve teaching materials and assessment tools for K-12 programming education together by creating a virtuous cycle. Improving teaching materials for computing education is in line with the conference theme " Creating a convergence in engineering education and workforce development". In this research, coding sheets are used as a part of the teaching materials, and the assessment tools are used to assess the algorithmic thinking ability of the students. The assumption here is that there is a mutual impact between the improvement of teaching materials and that of assessment tools. This kind of strategy is important, especially in the setting of elementary school education in Japan in which conducting a pilot study is difficult. In Japan, the new curriculum guidelines were fully implemented in April 2020 in elementary schools and in April 2021 in junior high schools respectively. They will be implemented in April 2022 in high schools. Since the announcement of the new curriculum guidelines, the boards of education in the local governments have been preparing for the programming education in the schools. However, there are still remaining problems, including the shortage of trained teachers and the lack of good assessment tools. In order to remedy the shortage of trained teachers, we designed some coding sheets for the teaching materials consisting of block parts, servo motors, DC-motors, LEDs, and sensors. In our assessment tools which are supposed to assess students' Computational Thinking ability, we included only the questions for assessing algorithmic thinking ability, as there is a limited amount of time for the assessment in schools. We have used our teaching materials and our assessment tools in some elementary schools. Based on the results of the teaching activities, we discuss the strategy to improve the teaching materials and the assessment tools together.

Software testing is being leveraged in programming education for automated assessment of programming assignments. When using software testing in programming education, program specifications are provided as unit or integration tests, and students create programs that pass these tests. Although this method has various advantages, such as ensuring objective program specifications and automating the operation check, it also has many disadvantages. For example, detecting innovations, such as original specifications and functional extensions by an individual student, is difficult. The purpose of this research is to automatically detect functional differences among student programs in programming education using tests. In our proposed method, automatic test generation is applied to student programs, and the generated tests are mutually executed for other student programs. Furthermore, we classify the tests based on the execution path to obtain sets of tests that are capable of detecting functional differences.

Snapshot diagrams, which visualize in-memory program state, are frequently used in programming education to demonstrate new concepts and help students develop a better understanding of program functionality. In this paper we introduce Snapdown, a textual language for drawing snapshot diagrams, designed for use by both students and instructors of programming courses. Snapdown is designed with an emphasis on learnability and simplicity: both to be picked up by students in a classroom setting in a matter of minutes, and to enable creation and maintenance of diagrams in instructional content with minimal overhead. We introduce several use cases of Snapdown and describe the design and features of its textual language. We also describe a deployment of Snapdown during two semesters of emergency remote teaching in 6.031 Software Construction at MIT, a software engineering course intended for sophomore- and junior-level undergraduate students.

Reducing students' high dropout rates in the computer programming courses is a challenging problem of great concern in computer science education. Online Judge (OJ) systems were recently being investigated to address this problem and promote computer programming education. Most of the existing OJ systems have been confined only for evaluation purposes, and do not provide any personalized recommendations to enhance the productivity of a student. With this motivation, this paper proposes a novel rule-based OJ recommender system to promote computer programming education. The proposed system involves the following five steps: (i) scoring the programs submitted by a student automatically, (ii) generation of a transactional database, (iii) clustering the database with respect to their scores and other evaluation parameters, (iv) discovering interesting association rules that exist in each of the cluster's data, and (v) providing appropriate recommendations to the users. Experimental results on the data generated by a real-world OJ system demonstrate that the proposed system is efficient.

programming education has become an essential part of the primary and secondary school curriculum. Two main programming environment modalities, web-based visual programming applications and electronic cards, have become popular in curricular activities. Limiting the programming activities around these programming environments restricts education accessibility in socio-economically disadvantaged regions due to the need for an individual computer per student, lack of decent infrastructure, and high electronics prices. Effective, shared use of smartphones and tablets in programming education can provide equal opportunities. In this scenario, students can code simple drawings and animations using their own materials as tangible programming blocks by employing a single shared phone in the classroom as an interpreter. This article explains our development process of a new tangible programming environment which increases the accessibility of education. We discuss effective inclassroom use of image/text processing practices and transfer learning methods on smartphones.

Based on Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, this paper conducts in-depth research on enterprises, industries and primary and secondary schools, analyzes the current development of programming education in primary and secondary schools from the aspects of policy environment, technology environment, talent reserve and demand environment, etc., looks to the future, predicts the development trend, and has certain reference value for the establishment of primary and secondary school courses and the formulation of talent training programs.

Teaching computer programming language remotely presents particular difficulties due to its requirement for abstract and logical thinking. There is a dearth of research specifically examining the potential factors that determine student performance when distance self-learning is conducted for programming language education. This study aims to determine the influencing factors to conduct successful programming education on distance self-learning to help novice students effectively. The study is underlined by a concept map-based approach. A quasi-experimental approach was used to collect data from seventy-eight students. By utilizing factor analysis, this study proposes nine determinant factors of distance self-learning performance, namely educational architecture, knowledgeability, expectation insight, engagement tools, good organization, technological accessibility, assignment familiarity, advantageous tool, and assistance feature. This work suggested determinant factors that can predict student learning performance to motivate meaningful distance self-learning and construct their knowledge in programming education. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

Learning to code is considered as a difficult and challenging task for a significant number of novice programmers in programming education. Novice programmers have to acquire different skills such as problem solving, program design, comprehension, and debugging at the same time. On the other hand, most introductory programming courses focus more on syntax of the programming language. In this study, we developed and introduced a 'PROBSOL' application in three different learning systems (E-learning, M-learning and Game-based learning) to enhance the problem solving skills of novice programmers in an introductory programming (IP) course. A survey was conducted with the IP students to determine their perception about all the three applications in the IP course. Gender differences were determined by comparing both female and male students' responses for each question in the survey. The results of comparison show that male students were more satisfied with all the three applications compared to female students. Both female and male students perceived that all the three applications are user-friendly, enabled them to accomplish tasks more quickly, and enhanced their learning productivity. Overall, both male and female students appreciated all the three applications in the teaching and learning process of the IP course. This study implies that instructors can also use all the three applications as an additional teaching tool in the teaching and learning process of programming education.

Software and IT infrastructure keeps changing the way we live and work, but not necessarily for the better for all of us. Considering the implications of software on our society, and the industry's expectations towards computing graduates, it appears natural to address social and ethical competencies within computing curricula. However, this is not necessarily the case in German computing education. Due to this desideratum, this paper addresses the role of ethical guidelines and social responsibility in programming education in contrast to industry expectations. Expected competencies in programming education and ethics modules of CS study programs were identified by a secondary analysis of available data. The present work also gathered and qualitatively analyzed job advertisements with regard to expected competencies. The results (1) illustrate the lack of correspondence with what is expected in educational settings and the profession, and (2) outline implications for a socially responsible programming education. These findings will support educators in developing competency-based pedagogical approaches to address socially responsible learning objectives in future programming courses and CS study programs.

Analyzing Student Performance in programming education Using Classification Techniques

In this research, we aggregated students log data such as Class Test Score (CTS), Assignment Completed (ASC), Class Lab Work (CLW) and Class Attendance (CATT) from the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science Unit, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria. Similarly, we employed data mining techniques such as ID3 & J48 Decision tree algorithms to analyze the data. We compared these algorithms on 239 classification instances. The experimental results show that the J48 algorithm has higher accuracy in the classification task compared to the ID3 algorithm. The important feature attributes such as Information Gain and Gain Ratio feature evaluators were also compared. Both the methods applied were able to rank search methods. The experimental results confirmed that the two methods derived the same set of attributes with a slight deviation in the ranking. From the results analyzed, we discovered that 67.36 percent failed the course titled "Introduction to Computer programming", while 32.64 percent passed the course. Since the CATT has the highest gain value from our analysis;we concluded that it is largely responsible for the success or failure of the students. Recommendations were given on how to improve the failure rates in the future.
