Both number and diversity of computer-enabled physical objects in our surroundings is rapidly increasing. Such objects offer connectivity and are programmable, which forms basis for new kinds of cyber-physical computing environments. This has inspired us to propose a programming model called Action-Oriented programming (AcOP), where focus is at simplifying the creation of applications that build on sharing data and interactions between the devices. However, such co-operative multi-device programs are a huge challenge for security and privacy. Therefore, fine grained control over the publicity of event data and control over the actions are required. Fortunately, a lot can be achieved on the framework side to facilitate developer's use of security and privacy enhancing mechanisms. In this paper, we address this challenge in the context of AcOP.

Nowadays, computing hardware continues to move toward more parallelism and more heterogeneity, to obtain more computing power. From personal computers to supercomputers, we can find several levels of parallelism expressed by the interconnections of multi-core and many-core accelerators. On the other hand, computing software needs to adapt to this trend, and programmers can use parallel programming models (PPM) to fulfil this difficult task. There are different PPMs available that are based on tasks, directives, or low-level languages or library. These offer higher or lower abstraction levels from the architecture by handling their own syntax. However, to offer an efficient PPM with a greater (additional) high-level abstraction level while saving on performance, one idea is to restrict this to a specific domain and to adapt it to a family of applications. In the present study, we propose a high-level PPM specific to digital signal-processing applications. It is based on data-flow graph models of computation, and a dynamic run-time model of execution (StarPU). We show how the user can easily express this digital signal-processing application and can take advantage of task, data, and graph parallelism in the implementation, to enhance the performances of targeted heterogeneous clusters composed of CPUs and different accelerators (e.g., GPU and Xeon Phi). Many systems have been built for vertex-centric parallel graph processing. Based on the Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP) model, they execute user-defined operations at vertices iteratively and exchange information between vertices by messages. Even though the native BSP systems (e.g. Pregel and Giraph) execute the operations on vertices synchronously within an iteration, many other platforms (e.g. Grace, Blogel and GraphHP) have proposed asynchronous execution for improved efficiency. However, they also bring about an undesirable side effect: a program designed for synchronous platforms may not run properly on asynchronous platforms. In this demo, we present DFA-G (Deterministic Finite Automaton for Graph processing), a unified programming model for vertex-centric parallel graph processing. Built on DFA, DFA-G expresses the computation at a vertex as a process of message-driven state transition. A program modeled after DFA-G can run properly on both synchronous and asynchronous platforms. We demonstrate how to build DFA-G models using a graphical user interface and also how to automatically translate them into BSP programs.

Hybrid Diversity-aware Collective Adaptive Systems (HDA-CAS) is a new generation of socio-technical systems where both humans and machine peers complement each other and operate collectively to achieve their goals. These systems are characterized by the fundamental properties of hybridity and collectiveness, hiding from users the complexities associated with managing the collaboration and coordination of hybrid human/machine teams. In this paper we present the key programming elements of the SmartSociety HDA-CAS platform. We first describe the overall platform's architecture and functionality and then present concrete programming model elements - Collective-based Tasks (CBTs) and Collectives, describe their properties and show how they meet the hybridity and collectiveness requirements. We also describe the associated Java language constructs, and show how concrete use-cases can be encoded with the introduced constructs.

CloudFlow: A data-aware programming model for cloud workflow applications on modern HPC systems

Traditional High-Performance Computing (HPC) based big-data applications are usually constrained by having to move large amount of data to compute facilities for real-time processing purpose. Modern HPC systems, represented by High-Throughput Computing (HTC) and Many-Task Computing (MTC) platforms, on the other hand, intend to achieve the long-held dream of moving compute to data instead. This kind of data-aware scheduling, typically represented by Hadoop MapReduce, has been successfully implemented in its Map Phase, whereby each Map Task is sent out to the compute node where the corresponding input data chunk is located. However, Hadoop MapReduce limits itself to a one-map-to-one-reduce framework, leading to difficulties for handling complex logics, such as pipelines or workflows. Meanwhile, it lacks built-in support and optimization when the input datasets are shared among multiple applications and/or jobs. The performance can be improved significantly when the knowledge of the shared and frequently accessed data is taken into scheduling decisions. To enhance the capability of managing workflow in modern HPC system, this paper presents CloudFlow, a Hadoop MapReduce based programming model for cloud workflow applications. CloudFlow is built on top of MapReduce, which is proposed not only being data aware, but also shared-data aware. It identifies the most frequently shared data, from both task-level and job-level, replicates them to each compute node for data locality purposes. It also supports user-defined multiple Map- and Reduce functions, allowing users to orchestrate the required data-flow logic. Mathematically, we prove the correctness of the whole scheduling framework by performing theoretical analysis. Further more, experimental evaluation also shows that the execution runtime speedup exceeds 4X compared to traditional MapReduce implementation with a manageable time overhead. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Water allocation for agriculture in southwestern Iran using a programming model

Water pricing can play a major role in improving water allocation, encouraging users to conserve scarce water resources, and promoting improvements in productivity. In this study, the economic values of water in farms under Dorodzan Dam in southwestern Iran were calculated using linear programming models. The method was applied to three samples of farms that drew irrigation water from a canal, a well, and both a well and a canal. The results of this study revealed that the shadow prices of water in farms varied based on the water sources and time of year. Additionally, the estimated price for water is obviously higher than the price that farmers currently pay for water in the study area. Due to the different economic values of water calculated for different months, it is recommended that the price of irrigation water be adjusted accordingly during various seasons in a fashion similar to that of electrical energy.

In order to use a program written in C++ or in another programming language, a compiler and an development environment are necessary. In this paper we will present a method of using a C++ program from a web page and one of showing the results by using HTML, the ASP. NET framework and the Windows version of GNU GCC compiler -MinGW. The programming model presented in this paper can also be used for other compilers. The described application allows the implementation, test and usage of some algorithms without installing a development environment, using only a browser to connect to the Internet.

The FSM-SADF model of computation allows to find a tight bound on the throughput of firm real-time applications by capturing dynamic variations in scenarios. We explore an FSM-SADF programming model, and propose three different alternatives for scenario switching. The best candidate for our CompSOC platform was implemented, and experiments confirm that the tight throughput bound results in a reduced resource budget. This comes at the cost of a predictable overhead at runtime as well as increased communication and memory budgets. We show that design choices offer interesting trade-offs between run-time cost and resource budgets.

Heterogeneous architectures with their diverse architectural features impose significant programmability challenges. Existing programming systems involve non-trivial learning and are not productive, not portable, and are challenging to tune for performance. In this paper, we introduce Heterogeneous Habanero-C (H2C), which is an implementation of the Habanero execution model for modern heterogeneous (CPU + GPU) architectures. The H2C language provides high-level constructs to specify the computation, communication, and synchronization in a given application. H2C also implements novel constructs for task partitioning and locality. The H2C (source-to-source) compiler and runtime framework efficiently map these high-level constructs onto the underlying heterogeneous platform, which can include multiple CPU cores and multiple GPU devices, possibly from different vendors. Experimental evaluations of four applications show significant improvements in productivity, portability, and performance.

The R & D (Research & Development) process of mobile application can be regarded as a complex system engineering that needs to take into account a variety of influencing elements, such as customer's demands, engineering measures and business goals etc., as well as their interplay. A novel decision support platform is proposed to assist project managers in determining the optimal technical measures with implementation degrees and resource allocation scheme. Specially, the HDQ (House of Development Quality) is designed to collect essential data and information as well as reflect correlations among elements, which can effectively connect isolated information islands. Through the transform of HDQ, a multi-objective programming model is constructed to meet customers' overall demands and specific requirements. A combination of specified technical measures and resource allocation can be obtained under ideal conditions. Additionally, the extended model considering resource substitution is designed to realize further improvement by effectively utilizing the surplus resource in the above optimal condition, demonstrating the advantage of proper managerial arrangement and resource deployment. Finally, the R & D case of family financial management application is conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the suggested method, which offers a new perspective on mobile application R & D project management.
