Exergoeconomic and thermoeconomic analysis are among powerful and effective tools to find the best solutions between the two objective functions that can be used by energy engineers, minimizing economic cost and maximizing exergetic efficiency. In this research, operating parameters of a gas turbine power plant that produces 140 MW of electricity is optimized by using exergoeconomic principles and pso algorithm. The comparison of results between the pso algorithm and the base model shows very good improvements, i.e. the fuel mass flow rate by optimized parameters is 11.24% lower than the base case. Also the exergetic efficiency is 6.55% more than the base case. The verification by fuzzy logic shows that total matching pso results and base case is 99.5%.

In order to reduce passengers’ waiting time, improve the quality of security inspection, minimize the cost of service resource and maximize the utilization of security resource, the index system of risk-based airport passenger classification was constructed to identify passenger risk levels. Firstly, the index system of risk-based airport passenger classification was initially constructed through literature review and expert consultation. Secondly, the index system of risk-based airport passenger classification is optimized with the help of relevant professionals’ questionnaires and SPSS22.0 software. Finally, BP neural network classifier is selected and which was optimized by pso algorithm. The classifier was trained in simulations and tested for classification effects by using the sample data of questionnaire survey. Test results show that the index system of risk-based airport passenger classification can be obtained to measure passenger risk degree from five aspects, natural condition, occupation status, economic condition, credit situation and flight condition. The effectiveness of the index system and the BP neural network classifier were verified by the classification results of 5 passengers through the classifier.

The optimization method combining Finite Element Method (FEM) and particle swarm optimization (pso) algorithm has been applied to design of corona ring structure for composite insulator used along Ultra High Voltage (UHV) transmission line in the present work Firstly, corona discharges have been investigated by means of ultraviolet imager (UVI) observation which indicates improper corona structure and installation. Next, E-field distributions along composite insulator and on surface of corona ring have been computed and analyzed with three-dimensional FEM calculation model of UHV tangent tower on which hangs suspension and tension composite insulators in single-circuit transmission line using commercial software ANSYS. Finally, an objective function which can evaluate nonlinear relationship between maximum electric field strength and corona ring structure parameters has been established based on initial calculating results, On the other hand, pso algorithm also has been implemented using APDL language in ANSYS computing environment, then optimization of corona ring structure for UHV composite insulator can be converted to seek minimum value of objective function utilized programmed pso algorithm. The results show that the proposed optimization process can be conducted automatically and efficiently, moreover, the electric field strength along insulator and around corona rings after optimization is less than that before optimization, and the optimal rings improve electric field distribution along composite insulators.

Modified CORPS beamforming network with null-steering capability

This article proposes CORPS beamforming network (BFNs) with both beam and null steering capability. All simulation results are presented for scannable mono-beam configuration but it can be extended to the multi-beam system. Complex inputs are optimised by means of the pso algorithm to get the array factor with the desired characteristics that are side lobe level (SLL), directivity (D), and null depth. All sub-blocks of the BFN are designed in the centre frequency of 2.4 GHz.

Reliability evaluation of power systems in the presence of energy storage system as demand management resource

The energy storage system as a demand management resource can be incorporated into a power system for economizing the cost and improving the reliability. Therefore, this paper investigates the participation of energy storage system in demand management and its application to the reliability evaluation. Firstly, an optimal period partitioning model is proposed for dividing load series into the on-peak period, the mid-peak period, and the off-peak period, and a pso based optimization algorithm is explored to optimize the unconstrained period partitioning problem which is transformed from the constrained optimization problem. Secondly, a demand management model with the participation of energy storage system is developed, and a peak shaving and valley filling factor is presented for describing the degree of demand management in this paper. Thirdly, a pseudo-analytical sampling method is presented for evaluating the reliability of the power system in the presence of energy storage system as a demand management resource, and some indices which can be used to describe the influence of demand management are defined. Finally, the Roy Billinton Test System and the Reliability Test System are conducted for verifying the correctness and validity of the proposed method.

Particle-swarm optimization of ensemble neural networks with negative correlation learning for forecasting short-term wind speed of wind farms in western China

In many countries, wind power is being developed as a primary source of renewable energy. However, it is difficult to describe and forecast wind speed features, which are stochastic and intermittently complex. Moreover, it is important both to obtain precise forecasts of wind speed for wind power generation and to determine their contribution to regional economies. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for wind speed forecasting. The proposed model is a hybrid that uses the wavelet analysis technique (WAT) for denoising, a negative correlation learning neural network (NCL-NN) ensemble, and an ensemble structure optimized using particle-swarm optimization (pso). We name the approach WAT-NCL-pso. We define a novel fitness function to optimize the performance of the NCL-NN ensemble. Then, we rebuild the new NCL-NN ensemble using the contribution rates (CRs) by applying the pso algorithm. We compiled wind speed datasets from six wind power generator sites in western China and used them to test the performance of the proposed model. Further, we analyzed the model's performance in terms of its robustness and time complexity. Finally, to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we compared its performance with that of the back-propagation neural network (BPNN), support vector machine (SVM), bagging, AdaBoost, random forest (RF), long short-term memory (LSTM), seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA), SVM with ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD-SVM), and NCL-NN with wavelet denoising (WAT-NCL) models. The simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the WAT-NCL-pso model is superior to other methods in terms of forecasting accuracy for short-term wind speeds. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. Maximum likelihood based identification methods for rational models

In a rational model, some terms of the information vector are correlated with the noise, which makes the traditional least squares based iterative algorithms biased. In order to overcome this shortcoming, this paper develops two recursive algorithms for estimating the rational model parameters. These two algorithms, based on the maximum likelihood principle, have three integrated key features: (1) to establish two unbiased maximum likelihood recursive algorithms, (2) to develop a maximum likelihood recursive least squares (ML-RLS) algorithm to decrease the computational efforts, (3) to update the parameter estimates by the ML-RLS based particle swarm optimisation (ML-RLS-pso) algorithm when the noise-to-output ratio is large. Comparative studies demonstrate that (1) the ML-RLS algorithm is only valid for rational models when the noise-to-output ratio is small, (2) the ML-RLS-pso algorithm is effective for rational models with random noise-to-output ratio, but at the cost of heavy computational efforts. Furthermore, the simulations provide cases for potential expansion and applications of the proposed algorithms.

A quad-rotor UAV is a typical under-actuated, strong coupled nonlinear system with parameter uncertainty and un-modeled disturbance. For the sake of tracking the desired trajectory, considering these characteristics, an Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) is introduced in this paper which divides the nested closed-loops control system into four independent channels. ADRC has the capacity of estimating and compensating overall disturbance to improve the system performance significantly. Then Particle Swarm Optimization (pso) is put forward to adjust and optimize parameters of ADRC so as to enhance the system design efficiency. Finally it is demonstrated that ADRC based on pso algorithm has much better performance such as shorter settling time, less overshoot and smaller attitude angle tracking error than classical ADRC in various numerical simulations.

Proposing optimum parameters of TMDs using GSA and pso algorithms for drift reduction and uniformity

In this study, the optimum parameters of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) are proposed using Gravity Search algorithm (GSA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (pso) to reduce the responses of the structures. A MATLAB program is developed to apply the new approach to the benchmark 10 and 40-story structures. The obtained results are compared to those of other optimization methods used in the literature to verify the developed code. To show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed methods, nine far-field and near-field worldwide earthquakes are applied to the structures. The results reveal that in the 40-story structure, GSA algorithm can reduce the Relative Displacement (RD) and Absolute Acceleration (AA) up to 43% and 21%, respectively while the pso decreases them by 50% and 25%, respectively. In contrast, both GSA and pso algorithms reduce the RD and AA about 29% and 21% for the 10-story structure. Furthermore, using the proposed approach the required TMD parameters reduce by 47% and 63% in the 40 and 10-story buildings in comparison with the referenced ones. Result evaluation and related comparison indicate that these methods are more effective even by using smaller TMD parameters resulting in the reduction of acting force from TMD, having smaller stiffness and damping factors while being more cost effective due to its decreased parameters. In other words, the TMD with optimum parameters can play a positive role in both tall and typical structures.

A Hybrid Cable Connection Structure for Wind Farms with Reliability Consideration

The collector system in wind farm has a large number of cables. When one of the cable fails, the power generated by the wind turbine (WT) cannot be collected into the substation through the faulty cable. That would make the profits for the wind farm reduced. Therefore, it is necessary to find a more reliable cable structure, which can transfer power as much as possible even if the cable failure occurs. In this paper, a new cable connection method is proposed in two main steps to improve both the reliability of the cable connection and the economic. Two different wind farms with the same climatological information and high voltage substation location are investigated and compared in the case study. In the first step, the minimum spanning tree (MST) algorithm is adopted to connect all wind turbines (WTs) to the substation. The cables used in collector system are the 33-kV middle voltage alternating current (MVAC) cables. Then the power production generated by WTs is transmitted from substation to the high voltage substation via a 132-kV transmission cable. The initial cable connection layout is obtained in the first step and the total trenching length is optimized to be minimum. In addition, cable selection in each branch can be determined based on the cable current carrying capacity. In the second step, reliability assessment is implemented by analyzing the expected energy not supplied (EENS). Based on EENS, the evaluation index LPCrel is obtained. This index takes both reliability and economy into account. Additional cables found by particle swarm optimization (pso) algorithm are added to the initial cable connection layout. Finally, a cable layout called hybrid structure is formed. What is more, by adding additional cables, the LPCrel is reduced by 1.5%. The simulation results clearly indicate that the proposed method is better when the cable failure is considered.
