We propose a new methodology that harnesses recent advancements in AI techniques to formulate an AI-facilitating code learning cycle for students. The approach builds on an existing learning process and innovatively incorporates pair programming into the learning cycle. It first transforms the example code into scaffold code as exercises through an instructor-AI pairing. The scaffold code serves as an exercise for students to complete and debug on a hardware platform iteratively with an expert AI assistant. This design alleviates instructors' burden of crafting new exercises for new scenarios and offers students the advantage of interactive learning with scenario diversity. We evaluate the methodology using a suite of example codes and assess the semantic similarity among different code versions produced by AI assistants. The case study shows promising results of the methodology. We further discuss our findings and outline future work for the proposed methodology.

In this paper, we investigate the gaze patterns of individuals within pairs as they traced and debugged fragments of code. We performed a dual eye tracking experiment, recorded their fixations and computed the gaze-based metrics of these individuals. The participants within pairs were categorized into a more successful and less successful participant based on the number of bugs found. Results suggest that the more successful participants acquaint themselves first with the program encoding more information about the program, have more increased attention on the erroneous lines of code, strike a good balance between processing and searching, read code less linearly, and are more engaged in the task. The goal of this study is to capture individual expertise to gain insights on what makes the more skilled participants in a pair programming setup efficient and effective through their gaze patterns.

pair programming (PP) is an effective and operable approach to improve Computational Thinking (CT). However, the process of PP is complex to understand for students at the elementary level, which needs to be supported. Collaboration scripts is a promising way to structure the collaborative process through three mechanisms: pp forming mechanism, role-task mechanism, the feedback mechanism. We conducted a pilot study to examine the effectiveness of collaboration in students' use of collaboration scripts and furthermore to evaluate the development of CT and math. Both quantitative and qualitative data about the students' CT skills, mathematical achievements and perceptions of collaboration scripts were collected. The results showed that the PP with collaboration scripts can improve the CT skills, mathematical achievements;facilitate higher collaborative relationship;give students good perceptions by teacher's feedback.

pair programming is a collaborative learning approach in computer science in which students (or employees) work closely with a partner on the same programming task. A long-standing question within pair programming is whether certain combinations of students lead to greater learning, effort, and/or performance. Earlier studies have explored the role of prior programming experience, including the discrepancy between partners' experience, as a potentially important factor in shaping these outcomes. However, the previous findings are highly inconsistent, which may result from divergent (and often suboptimal) ways of defining previous experience or skill, problems with self-selection into pairs, and small sample sizes that often yield nonsignificant results. The present study sought to improve on all of these limitations through an examination of 587 undergraduates who each participated in three different randomly assigned pairings. Not surprisingly, students' own programming experience was positively related to understanding concepts from lab, confidence in the finished product, and overall interest in computer science. However, students who worked with a more experienced partner actually had poorer outcomes, including lower effort exerted on the assignment, perceptions that their partner gave more effort than they did, less time in the driving role (i.e., typing out the assignment), lower understanding of concepts from lab, and less interest in computer science overall. The partner's experience is unrelated to other outcomes, including confidence in the finished assignment, feeling productive during lab session, and average grades received during the pairing. These results provide important considerations for the assignment of students to pairs.

pair programming and peer code review are two collaborative inspection methods that improve the quality of software. These light-weight review techniques are low-cost alternatives to formal inspections and rigorous reviews that commonly remove 90% of software defects before even the first test case is run. While pair programming has many advocates, evidence suggests that pair programming is not as useful as claimed and the requirement of the pairs to co-locate is hindrance on many development projects. Peer code reviews, however, have been shown to be just as effective as pair programming and are a better fit for many of today's software efforts that are being developed collaboratively, but asynchronously, in the cloud. In this paper we demonstrate peer review's effectiveness as compared to pair programming in the context of Test Driven Development (TDD), a popular agile programming technique that's rapidly gaining mainstream acceptance. The empirical evidence also shows that equal quality programs can be produced at a lower cost (28% less than pair programming) using a peer review technique in TDD as compared with traditional pair programming

Agile software development is an iterative and incremental methodology, where solutions evolve from self-organizing, cross-functional teams. pair programming is a type of agile software development technique where two programmers work together with one computer for developing software. This paper reports the results of the pair programming exercise which was carried out among fifty six post graduate students of Master of Computer Applications (MCA) who are engaged in developing small applications as a part of their Visual programming laboratory course at Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) during the academic year 2012-2013. The basic intent of the study is to explore the possibilities of adopting pair programming as a pedagogical tool in higher educational setting. The study investigates the possibilities of deploying purposeful pair programming modules to facilitate knowledge sharing in regular laboratory sessions. The research findings suggest that pair programming can be a useful approach to teach computer programming in higher education to facilitate effective knowledge sharing among the students.

Twine is an open-source tool for creating interactive, nonlinear stories. Minimal programming experience is required for users to create a Twine story, but advanced programmers can extend a Twine story with conditional logic, variables, CSS, and JavaScript. Its accessibility has led to it being used as an educational tool, but it does not offer a native way for multiple users to collaborate on the same story. Students working on a single story are limited to sharing a computer or sending a file back and forth with each other. Prior research on pair programming with younger K-5 students have suggested that single-computer pair programming, where one person is actively using the computer at a given time, may not be the most productive method of collaboration. We developed Intertwined, a modified Twine that enables real-time collaboration between multiple users on the same story. This experience report details the use of Intertwined in a two-day programming camp with kids aged 8-15, where participants collaborated on a Twine story using both a single-computer pair programming method and a multi-computer pair-programming method where each camper was given their own computer. Our observations and survey results found that campers largely favored multi-computer pair programming. Campers had increased efficiency and fewer instances of interpersonal conflict when working on their own computers. Effective collaborativework relies not only on the appropriate method of collaboration but the appropriate tool and activity for collaboration, and real-time collaborative work using interactive stories should be given consideration as an effective learning method.

pair programming is considered a very beneficial method for software development and is gaining increased attention in computer science education. Both partners in a programming pair should be equal and active participants, alternating on the roles of driver and navigator, but how pairs are formed in educational settings and how the resulting level of equity influences the outcomes of pair programming in classrooms remain open questions. To answer these questions, we conducted a survey involving 250 students and 100 teachers with prior pair programming experience, along with 147 students and teachers lacking such experience. We identify the currently common and preferred pair formation processes by teachers and students. We evaluate the outcomes of pair programming, as indicated by attitudes and perceived learnings, while we assess equity through behavioural patterns such as dominance, role compliance, and acknowledgment. Consequently, we investigate the relationship between outcomes and equity. Our results reveal a misalignment in pairing practices between teachers, who pair students based on diverse digital skills, and students, who express a preference for pairings aligned with similar skills. Despite this disparity, all participants think of pair programming as a method supporting equity. High acknowledgment between partners emerges as a significant factor of equity for positive attitudes and learnings, while role violations are identified as a common problem and a sign for lack of equity. These findings confirm that educators should take equity into account in pair programming classes.

pair programming, the practice of two programmers working side by side on the same task on one computer, is a practice that is becoming increasingly prevalent in the computer science industry. Although there has been a large amount of research investigating pair programming in an industry setting, there has been little work done with pair programming in a classroom setting. Furthermore, the studies that have been done have concentrated on programming students with ample programming experience in a variety of languages. In addition to this, industry studies have focused in on the amount of work being completed rather than what is learned by the programmers. Therefore, this work will concentrate on students with considerably less programming experience, and focus on whether they learn better while working in teams. In addition, we will investigate how the difference in programming skill contributes to the amount learned. To do so, we have observed and interviewed students participating in pair programming to determine whether they are able to learn more and enjoy their work more when working in pairs. Finally, we participated in pair programming in a variety of settings to test it first hand. We found that despite some drawbacks, pair programming can be extremely beneficial. When used correctly, pair programming can be a valuable asset to the computer science classroom.
