Utilization of parallel computer system for modeling of geological phenomena in GIS

Geographical data processing using Geographical Information Systems on single processor computer is going to be very difficult in consideration of constantly growing amount of data. In the recent years there is a trend of operation of those systems on parallel computers, which brings an effect mainly in the area of their performance. This article deals with possibilities of shortening of time demanded for mathematically exacting process of both analysis and visualization of variety of geographical data using parallel architectures. It focuses on some methods of geographical data processing as well as on types of parallel computing systems, together with description of their practical application to the environment of Geographical Information Systems.

APPLYING parallel computer-SYSTEMS TO SOLVE SYMMETRICAL TRIDIAGONAL EIGENVALUE PROBLEMS

A block parallel partitioning method for computing the eigenvalues of symmetric tridiagonal matrix is presented. The algorithm is based on partitioning, in a way that ensures load balance during computation. This method is applicable to both shared memory- and distributed memory-MIMD systems. Compared with other parallel tridiagonal eigenvalue algorithms existing in the literature, the proposed algorithm achieves a higher speedup of O(p) on a parallel computer with p-fold parallelism, which is linear, and the data communication between processors is less than that required for other methods. The results were tested and evaluated on an MIMD machine, and were within 62% to 98% of the predicted performance.

Because a massively parallel computer processes vast amounts of data and generates many access requests from multiple processors simultaneously, parallel secondary storage requires large capacity and high concurrency. One effective method of implementation of such secondary storage is to use disk arrays which have multiple disks connected in parallel. In this paper, we propose a parallel file access method named DECODE (dynamic express changing of data entry) in which load balancing of each disk is achieved by dynamic determination of the write data position. For resolution of the problem of data fragmentation which is caused by the relocation of data during a write process, the concept of ''Equivalent Area'' is introduced. We have performed a preliminary performance evaluation using software simulation under various access statuses by changing the access pattern, access size and stripe size and confirmed the effectiveness of load balancing with this method.

World Wide Web interface for advanced SPECT reconstruction algorithms implemented on a remote massively parallel computer

Data from Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) studies are blurred by inevitable physical phenomena occurring during data acquisition. These errors may be compensated by means of reconstruction algorithms which take into account accurate physical models of the data acquisition procedure. Unfortunately, this approach involves high memory requirements as well as a high computational burden which cannot be afforded by the computer systems of SPECT acquisition devices. In this work the possibility of accessing High Performance Computing and Networking (HPCN) resources through a World Wide Web interface for the advanced reconstruction of SPECT data in a clinical environment was investigated. An iterative algorithm with an accurate model of the variable system response was ported on the Multiple Instruction Multiple Data (MIMD) parallel architecture of a Cray T3D massively parallel computer. The system was accessible even from low cost PC-based workstations through standard TCP/IP networking. A speedup Factor of 148 was predicted by the benchmarks run on the Gray T3D. A complete brain study of 30 (64 x 64) slices was reconstructed from a set of 90 (64 x 64) projections with ten iterations of the conjugate gradients algorithm in 9 s which corresponds to an actual speed-up factor of 135. The technique was extended to a more accurate 3D modeling of the system response for a true 3D reconstruction of SPECT data, the reconstruction time of the same data set with this more accurate model was 5 min. This work demonstrates the possibility of exploiting remote HPCN resources from hospital sites by means of low cost workstations using standard communication protocols and an user-friendly WWW interface without particular problems for routine use. The CP-PACS computer is a massively parallel computer consisting of 2048 processing units and having a peak speed of 614 GFLOPS and 128 GByte of main memory. It was developed over the four years from 1992 to 1996 at the Center for Computational Physics, University of Tsukuba, for large-scale numerical simulations in computational physics, especially those of lattice QCD. The CP-PACS computer has been in full operation for physics computations since October 1996. In this article we describe the chronology of the development, the hardware and software characteristics of the computer, and its performance for lattice QCD simulations. We present the design for the NYU Ultracomputer, a shared-memory MIMD parallel machine composed of thousands of autonomous processing elements. This machine uses an enhanced message switching network with the geometry of an Omega-network to approximate the ideal behavior of Schwartz"s paracomputer model of computation and to implement efficiently the important fetch-and-add synchronization primitive. We outine the hardware that would be required to build a 4096 processor system using 1990"s technology. We also discuss system software ❉s, and present analytic studies of the network performance. Finally, we include a sample of our effort to implement and simulate parallel variants of important scientific p̀rograms.

An innovative design is proposed for an MIMD distributed shared-memory (DSM) parallel computer capable of achieving gracious performance with technology expected to become feasible/viable in less than a decade. This New Millennium Computing Point Design was chosen by NSF, DARPA, and NASA as having the potential to deliver 100 TeraFLOPS and 1 PetaFLOPS performance by the year 2005 and 2007, respectively. Its scalability guarantees a lifetime extending well into the next century. Our design takes advantage of free-space optical technologies, with simple guided-wave concepts, to produce a 1 D building block (B B) that implements efficiently a large, fully connected system of processors. Designing fully connected, large systems of electronic processors could be a very beneficial impact of optics on massively parallel processing. A 2D structure is proposed for the complete system, where the aforementioned 1D BE is extended into two dimensions. This architecture behaves like a 2D generalized hypercube, which is characterized by outstanding performance and extremely high wiring complexity that prohibits its electronics-only implementation. With readily available technology, a mesh of clear plastic/glass bars in our design facilitate point-to-point bit-parallel transmissions that utilize wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and follow dedicated optical paths. Each processor is mounted on a card. Each card contains eight processors interconnected locally via an electronic crossbar. Taking advantage of higher-speed optical technologies, all eight processors share the same communications interface to the optical medium using time-division multiplexing (TDM). A case study for 100 TeraFLOPS performance by the year 2005 is investigated in detail;the characteristics of chosen hardware components in the case study conform to SLA (Semiconductor Industry Association) projections. Convolution neural network can gain optional solution by training dataset many times. But persons without experiments are very difficult to seek a good learning rate or a good convergence criterion. We propose a framework, which only are composed by many cheap computers, and by improved convolution network to handle this problem. In the framework, we use terminal server to dispatch initial parameter to each calculate unit (computer) and receive their final result. Single unit's collapse will not affect framework's final result, so framework has strong superiority and robustness.

In this paper, we present a new control system for the intelligent force control of multifingered robot grips. The multilevel system architecture combines both fuzzy-based adaptation level and a neural-based one with a conventional PID-controller that allows autonomous performing fine manipulations of an object. Two various kinds of fuzzy controllers will be presented. They use a decision making logic which expresses the a-priory knowledge about the grasp force behaviour inside the friction cones and the necessary reactions regarding the criterion for grip stability. A neural controller, based on a Hooke-Jeeves optimisation approach, has been developed as well. The neural control algorithm is implemented by a three-layered backpropagation neural network. The neural and fuzzy controllers can be used separately or parallel. In the last case the neural controller can be on-line trained using the input-output information from the fuzzy one. A computer based simulation system for the peg-in-hole insertion task is developed to analyse and to compare the capabilities of both control algorithms. The demands of flexibility and real-time control of the implementation of the control system are suited by a tailorable parallel computer concept. The two basic ideas of the concept are to set up each processing element individually for its application and connect these elements with different communicational methods accordingly to the applicational demands. As this happens before runtime the concept is called static flexibility and is implemented using a new mechanical computer structure. © 1994 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. This paper presents a new genetic algorithm "Search Space Establishment-less Type High Speed Genetic Algorithm Considering Mutation Rate and Using parallel computer: PMSSELGA" for optimization control problems. Through the PMSSELGA, all the search space of the tuning parameters for the control are set in the range of 1000.0-0.001. And, a mutation rate is gradually to decrease with the generation from 100 % to 15%. The PMSSELGA is speeded up by the parallel computation and the avoidance of repetitive calculations. It is applied to the optimum design of Multi-input power system stabilizer using Series Compensation Method in power system, which contains low-frequency oscillations, and the efficiency through the PMSSELGA is superior to conventional one.
