Unifying computing resources and access interface to support parallel and distributed computing education

This article presents how various on-site and remote computing resources are combined into a framework to support teaching parallel and distributed computing (PDC) at the undergraduate level. The combination of these resources enables the delivery of PDC programming, system, and architectural concepts via a browser-based common interface (JupyterHub) and a single programming environment (Python and its supported libraries). This also allows lecturers and students to focus more on the principles of PDC and less on the technicalities of native languages for different platforms. We describe how this framework can support a comprehensive set of PDC course modules, including lectures, assignments, and projects, for a full semester junior-level class. Adoption of this framework in various teaching environments at Clemson University has received positive feedback from both instructors and participants. Published by Elsevier Inc.

With the advent of parallel computing, CS departments must face the question of how to integrate the parallel computing knowledge into the curricula. In this paper, we introduced our practice in the parallel computing education which used simulation methodology. In our course, students learned the basics of GPU architectures, parallel computing along with optimization techniques to tuning the performance. Furthermore, we elaborated the work which combined simulation-based architecture research and parallel computing - a cache simulator based on GPU. In this part, the common architecture research methodology with tool, such as simulation methodology and Pin tool were introduced. This study case has shown as an effective supplement to our teaching philosophy: balance design based on quantitative characterization.

Development and Assessment of a New Approach to Teaching parallel Databases*

Software development, database management and parallel computing are deeply integrated and related technologies. Both types of technology are rapidly evolving and becoming more sophisticated, with resulting subtleties of their interaction learned directly in the workplace. Academic research focusing on developing programs or approaches to professional training in these areas in universities is relatively scarce. This study provides a theoretical background and practical approach to building parallel database programming skills by introducing software developers' best practices. The piloting of the proposed approach was attended by 64 third-year IT students in the experimental group, who were involved in 3-month training, with their learning pathway depending on the challenges they faced. Tasks were assigned and checked by instructors. The findings suggested that this approach can help to improve technology proficiency among students in accordance with the recognized professional competence level rather quickly. No one achieved such a result in the control group. The Student's t-test showed that the differences in scores between the control and experimental groups were statistically significant. Essentially, the research findings can be used to teach parallel databases and to strengthen ties with graduates' potential employers in the corresponding academic programs.

We present two new assignments in the Peachy parallel Assignments series of assignments for teaching parallel and distributed computing. Submitted assignments must have been successfully used previously and are selected for being easy for other instructors to adopt and for being "cool and inspirational" so that students spend time on them and talk about them with others. The first assignment in this paper familiarizes students with the RAFT library for performing GPU-accelerated computation, pail of the RAPIDS AI ecosystem. Students use this library to accelerate a Radius Nearest Neighbor computation, finding all points within a given distance from a query point. In the second assignment, students parallelize a bird flocking simulation using OpenMP or OpenACC. It is a visual assignment which allows students to readily see the performance improvement.

The presentation of Peachy parallel Assignments at parallel and distributed computing education workshops is an effort to promote the reuse of high-quality assignments, both saving precious faculty time and improving the quality of course assignments. These assignments must have been used in class and are selected for being easy to adopt by other instructors and for being "cool and inspirational" so that students spend time on them and talk about them with others. The assignments and their materials are also archived on the Peachy parallel Assignments website. In this paper, we present two new assignments. The first has students implement the Mandelbrot set in Python, combining an interesting image with Python's ease of use. The second assignment is a substantial project to implement a programming contest judge. It requires that students use many parallel and distributed computing concepts, with the added benefit of solving a "real problem" and creating software with which students may have personally interacted.

As the parallel computing education movement attempts to increase the coverage of parallel and Distributed computing (PDC) material in worldwide CS curricula, a major challenge is propagation: getting others to adopt PDC-related curricular materials. This paper reports on a series of faculty development workshops for the ToUCH project, held with the goal of propagating modules on heterogeneous parallel computing. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these workshops were held in a new virtual format that split the meeting over multiple days and included explicit expectations for followup work to increase adoption. Subsequent evaluation show that the participants appreciated the format and that many of them adopted one or more of the modules.

The presentation of Peachy parallel Assignments in several workshops on parallel and distributed computing education aims to promote the reuse of highquality assignments, both saving precious faculty time and improving the quality of course assignments. Presented assignments are selected competitively- they must have been successfully used in a real classroom, be easy for other instructors to adopt, and be "cool and inspirational" to encourage students to spend time on them and talk about them with others. Winning assignments are also archived on the Peachy parallel Assignments website. In this installment of Peachy parallel Assignments, we present three new assignments. The first assignment is to simulate an Abelian Sandpile, with grains of sand moving from tall piles to shorter ones. This is a discrete simulation that creates colorful and intricate images. The second assignment is a Big Data problem in which students use the MapReduce paradigm to recreate "Warming Stripes", a visualization of climate data that highlights climate change. The third assignment introduces climate-oriented optimization by asking students to schedule distributed workflows to minimize their carbon footprint.

We present efforts to encourage the adoption of modules for teaching heterogeneous parallel computing through a faculty development workshop. The workshop was held remotely using a novel format to exploit the advantages of a virtual format and mitigate its disadvantages. Adoption at a wide variety of institutions showed module effectiveness and also gathered feedback leading to several module improvements. We also report on the adoptions themselves, which show the importance of supporting adaptation of the modules for diverse settings.

Peachy parallel Assignments are model assignments for teaching parallel computing concepts. They are competitively selected for being adoptable by other instructors and "cool and inspirational" for students. Thus, they allow instructors to easily add high-quality assignments that will engage students to their classes. This group of Peachy assignments features two new assignments. The first has students speed up a graphical n-body simulation by identifying performance bottlenecks, making algorithmic improvements, and parallelizing the program using OpenCilk. The second has them parallelize a Monte Carlo hill climbing algorithm using one or more of OpenMP, MPI, and CUDA or OpenCL.

This paper provides an overview of posters accepted for the EduPar 21 poster session. Poster sessions have been an important part of the EduPar workshops, providing an opportunity to facilitate interactions and fostering the community. After a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic we decided to resume the poster session tradition and to hold the first virtual poster session in EduPar's eleven years history.
