A comparative study on resource allocation and energy efficient job scheduling strategies in large-scale parallel computing systems

In the large-scale parallel computing environment, resource allocation and energy efficient techniques are required to deliver the quality of services (QoS) and to reduce the operational cost of the system. Because the cost of the energy consumption in the environment is a dominant part of the owner's and user's budget. However, when considering energy efficiency, resource allocation strategies become more difficult, and QoS (i.e., queue time and response time) may violate. This paper therefore is a comparative study on job scheduling in large-scale parallel systems to: (a) minimize the queue time, response time, and energy consumption and (b) maximize the overall system utilization. We compare thirteen job scheduling policies to analyze their behavior. A set of job scheduling policies includes (a) priority-based, (b) first fit, (c) backfilling, and (d) window-based policies. All of the policies are extensively simulated and compared. For the simulation, a real data center workload comprised of 22385 jobs is used. Based on results of their performance, we incorporate energy efficiency in three policies i.e., (1) best result producer, (2) average result producer, and (3) worst result producer. We analyze the (a) queue time, (b) response time, (c) slowdown ratio, and (d) energy consumption to evaluate the policies. Moreover, we present a comprehensive workload characterization for optimizing system's performance and for scheduler design. Major workload characteristics including (a) Narrow, (b) Wide, (c) Short, and (d) Long jobs are characterized for detailed analysis of the schedulers' performance. This study highlights the strengths and weakness of various job scheduling polices and helps to choose an appropriate job scheduling policy in a given scenario.

For solving inverse gravimetry problems, efficient stable parallel algorithms based on iterative gradient methods are proposed. For solving systems of linear algebraic equations with block-tridiagonal matrices arising in geoelectrics problems, a parallel matrix sweep algorithm, a square root method, and a conjugate gradient method with preconditioner are proposed. The algorithms are implemented numerically on a parallel computing system of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics (PCS-IMM), NVIDIA graphics processors, and an Intel multi-core CPU with some new computing technologies. The parallel algorithms are incorporated into a system of remote computations entitled "Specialized Web-Portal for Solving Geophysical Problems on Multiprocessor Computers." Some problems with "quasi-model" and real data are solved.

In this paper, the method of dispatching and optimal distribution of resources of various types in parallel computing systems is considered, based on preliminary processing of the individual problems parameters, construction of fuzzy evaluation systems and hybrid neural-fuzzy production systems. The application of this method provides advantages in conditions of inaccurate, incomplete and difficult to formalize information about the characteristics of performed tasks, taking into account initially established preferences and achieving the desired performance indicators for the tasks and selected planning strategy.

Toward cost-effective aeroelastic analysis on advanced parallel computing systems

Progress toward the development and validation of a fast, accurate, and cost effective aeroelastic method for several advanced parallel computing platforms is presented. The ENSAERO code, developed at NASA Ames Research Center, was selected for this research effort. To improve the performance, the capabilities of the constituent modules have been enhanced. The relative merits of four parallel computing environments are investigated: SGI workstation cluster, SGI Power Challenge machine, SGI Power Challenge cluster, and the IBM SP2 system. To assess the computational performance of the enhanced ENSAERO code, the results of unsteady Navier-Stokes simulations of the transonic how over a fully flexible aeroelastic arrow-wing body configuration are reported. In addition, to ensure that the modified version of ENSAERO performs to specifications and to evaluate the benefits of the enhancements, unsteady Euler/Navier-Stokes calculations for an AGARD standard aeroelastic configuration are done. To evaluate the level of accuracy of the enhanced system, the ENSAERO results are compared with established computational solutions and experimental data.

A wavenumber parallel computational code for the numerical integration of the Navier-Stokes equations

A parallel computational code for the numerical integration of the Navier-Stokes equations has been developed. The system of partial differential equations describing the non-steady flow of a viscous incompressible fluid in three dimensions is considered and applied to the channel flow problem. A mixed spectral-finite difference technique for the numerical integration of the governing equations is devised: Fourier decomposition in both streamwise and spanwise directions and finite differences in the direction orthogonal to the solid walls are used, while a semi-implicit procedure of Runge-Kutta and Crank-Nicolson type is utilised for the advancement in time. A wavenumber parallelism is implemented for the execution of the calculations. Within each time step of integration, the computations are executed in two distinct phases, each phase corresponding to a different way of decomposing the computational domain, vertically and horizontally, respectively;in both phases of the whole calculation process, each portion of the computing domain is handled by a different CPU on a Convex SPP 1200/XA parallel computing system. Results are presented in terms of performance of the calculation procedure with the use of 2,4,6 and 8 processors respectively and are compared with the single-processor performance. Also the accuracy of the parallel algorithm has been tested, by analysing the evolution in time of small amplitude disturbances of the mean flow;a satisfactory agreement with the theoretical solution given by the hydrodynamic stability theory is found, provided that a given number of grid points in the y direction are present. Obtaining the optimal configuration of high-radix Combined switches

High-radix switches reduce network cost and improve network performance, especially in large switch-based interconnection networks. However, there are some problems related to the integration scale to implement such switches in a single chip. An interesting alternative for building high-radix switches consists of combining several current smaller single-chip switches to obtain switches with a greater number of ports. A key design issue of this kind of high-radix switches is the internal switch configuration, specifically, the correspondence between the ports of these high-radix switches and the ports of their smaller internal single-chip switches. In this paper we use artificial intelligence and data mining techniques in order to obtain the optimal internal configuration of all the switches in the network of large supercomputers running parallel applications. Simulation results show that using the resultant switch configurations, it is possible to achieve similar performance as with single-chip switches with the same radix, which would be unfeasible with the current integration scale. Efficient and accurate evolutionary multi-objective optimization paradigms for satellite constellation design

Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms have been shown to be effective optimization tools to search the complex tradeoff spaces of satellite constellation design. Often, the metrics that make up the design tradeoff require lengthy function evaluation time, resulting in a decreased utility of serial multi-objective evolutionary algorithms. In this research, the authors implement two parallel processing multi-objective evolutionary algorithm paradigms, the master-slave and island models, on a heterogeneous system of processors and operating systems. The efficiency and effectiveness of each approach is studied in the context of a regional coverage design problem. The island scheme outperforms the master-slave model with respect to efficiency. A study of the search dynamics for each paradigm demonstrates that both reliably meet the goals of multi-objective optimization (progressing toward the Pareto-optimal front while maintaining a diverse set of solutions). A key conclusion of this research is that both paradigms provide excellent approximations of the true Pareto frontier using a single seed, and when combined across multiple trial runs, they find nearly the entire set of Pareto-optimal solutions.

Refined Numerical Simulation of Three-Dimensional Riveting in Laminated Composites

Riveting in laminated composites is not carried out, because the riveting process can easily induce failure and form a nonuniform interference fit. An electromagnetic riveting riveter provides a relatively uniform interference fit with no direct failure in the riveted joint. Finite element numerical simulation of three-dimensional riveting is conducted by considering the sine wave of force history for the electromagnetic riveting riveter. To reflect the physical phenomenon of the complicated contact of riveting in laminated composites, a refined modeling of the washer inner fillet is considered, and the parallel computations using LS-DYNA are used. Refined simulation is validated by experiments reported in the literature. The electromagnetic riveting is properly applied for riveting in laminated composites. Optimized maximum riveting force is obtained for relative uniform interference based on the criterion of relative interference for fatigue life extension. A parametric study of the washer effects during the riveting process is investigated to obtain a proper riveted joint in laminated composites.

Automatic reconfiguration and yield of the TESH multicomputer network

This paper considers defect tolerance issues for parallel computing systems based on a new interconnection network, namely "Tori connected mESHes (TESH)." Key features of this network are the following: It is hierarchical, thus allowing exploitation of computation locality and systematic expansion up to a million processors, and it appears to be well-suited for VLSI/ULSI realization, including 3D implementation. The goal here is to present efficient reconfiguration algorithms for such hierarchical parallel computing systems. Despite the dramatic improvement in defect density in recent years, it is still necessary to provide redundancy and defect circumvention to achieve acceptable system-level yields for large multicomputer systems. The TESH-based parallel systems are no exception. Therefore, we develop placement and routing algorithms that assign logical nodes to healthy physical nodes and configure switches to bypass the defective cells, switches, and links. Simulations indicate that the placement,(Or remapping) is nearly 100 percent effective, while the routing performance diminishes with increasing defect density for a given extent of redundancy. The approach scales up well because, in TESH networks, essentially the same kind of sparing is used at all levels.

In many fields of research, for example in simulations of living systems, the automatic execution of many numerical experiments with varying parameters is a crucial task. We propose a web-based multiplatform service for launching a series of experiments on a supercomputer. The service interface allows the user to set parameters and run jobs on a supercomputer without working in the command line. The system minimizes the number of user actions required for launching a large series of experiments. Using the built-in database, one of the previously conducted experiments can be picked up and quickly restarted with new settings. We provide the architecture of interaction between a computing cluster, a database, and an external web application, as well as the algorithm for generating tuples from sets of values of individual parameters, and features of the graphical user interface. The system actively carries out computational experiments to study the drift of spiral waves in the myocardium on the Uran supercomputer, Ekaterinburg. (C) 2018 The Authors.
