parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) refers to a simulation platform initiated by Chandy and Misra [1979]. The basic idea of PDES is that a simulation model is decomposed into submodels which are then run on different processes concurrently. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of PDES' use for manufacturing systems. First, the PDES platform and basic analytical methods associated with this platform are briefly introduced, the difficulty of PDES compared with conventional simulation method is discussed. A survey of PDES' use in manufacturing systems is then, provided, which covers: (1) a summary of different PDES models for different kinds of manufacturing systems, and (2) a comparison of PDES characteristics in the context of decomposition method and synchronization scheme. Based on the survey, it is concluded that using PDES for manufacturing systems has not been successful and its success depends on both the availability of efficient model decomposition method and the improvement of suitable hardware architecture.

The discrete event systems specification (DEVS) simulation has been studied to analyze complex homogeneous systems which is represented by the cellular models. In the simulation of large-scale DEVS cellular model, it requires a highperformance simulation technique such as parallel simulation. This paper presents a parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) environment using a graphics processing unit (GPU) to simulate DEVS cellular models. In the proposed PDES environment, the DEVS cellular models and their corresponding simulators are mapped to the GPU. Due to the features of the GPU, two parts of the traditional DEVS simulation algorithm are revised. The first is about managing the event list, and the second is about routing output events. To verify the efficiency of the proposed environment, we designed and experimented the case study for a fire-spreading phenomenon, and analyzed the experimental results.

Nowadays simulation modeling is applied for solving a wide range of problems. There are simulations which require significant performance and time resources. To decrease overall simulation time a model can be converted to a distributed system and executed on a computer network. The goal of this project is to create a library enabling clear and rapid development parallel discrete event models in AnyLogic. The library is aimed for professionals in computer simulation and helps to reduce code amount. The project includes a research on different synchronization algorithms. In this paper we present techniques which can be used in creating distributed models. We present comparison of a single threaded model with a distributed model implementing optimistic algorithm. The comparison shows a significant improvement in wallclock time achieved by separating the model into independent submodels with minimal communications.

The modeling and simulation of social networks is an important approach to better understanding complex social phenomena, especially when the inner structure has remarkable impact on behavior. With the availability of unprecedented data sets, simulating large-scale social networks of millions, or even billions, of entities has become a new challenge. Current simulation environments for social studies are mostly sequential and may not be efficient when social networks grow to a certain size. In order to facilitate large-scale social network modeling and simulation, this paper proposes a framework named SUPE-Net, which is based on a parallel discrete event simulation environment YH-SUPE for massively parallel architectures. The framework is designed as a layered architecture with utilities for network generation, algorithms and agent-based modeling. Distributed adjacency lists are used for graph modeling and a reaction-diffusion paradigm is adapted to model dynamical processes. Experiments are performed using PageRank and the susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model on social networks with millions of entities. The results demonstrate that SUPE-Net has achieved a speedup of 12, and increased the event-processing rate by 11%, with good scalability and effectiveness.

As complex adaptive systems(CAS) continue to grow in scale and complexity, and the need for system adaptability increases, systems modelling has become an essential concern. parallel discrete event simulation became a preferred choice as logical process world view, which bridges complex system modelling and high-performance computing. To resolve the shortcoming of this world view identified with respect to modularity and scalability. A hierarchical composite modelling framework was proposed, which is a three-level architecture intended to support the composition and integration of sub-models. The bottom layer is simulation model component(SMC), which is not a model but implement some simulation-specific support functionality. The middle layer is logical process model(LP), which describes an agent which can react to the current situation by executing a sequence of SMCs. The top layer is CAS system model, which defines a CAS model consist of several LPs and also the interactions between these LPs. The hierarchical composite modelling process and parallel simulation execution strategy are discussed to support the modelling and simulation of a CAS. In order to verify its effectiveness, a complex social opinion system model is proposed based on this hierarchical composite modelling framework. A hierarchical parallel discrete event simulation kernel for multicore platform

The development of CPU has stepped into the era of multicore. Current parallel simulation kernel utilizes multicore resource by multi-process, which leads to inefficiency on communication and synchronization. To fulfill this gap, we proposed a HPSK (hierarchical parallel simulation kernel) model, which schedules logical processes and executes events in parallel with multithread paradigm. Based on this model, three key algorithms were proposed to support high performance: (1) An event management algorithm was proposed to improve the efficiency of creation and release of events. It uses a lock-free creation and asynchronous commitment mechanism to decouple the relationship between threads, hence reduce the overhead of locks. (2) A pointer-based communication algorithm was proposed to improve efficiency of communication between threads. It uses a buffer mechanism to avoid interrupting the execution of target thread. The target thread will read events from the buffers when it needs. By using ring-structure buffers, synchronization between sending and receiving of threads can be annihilated. (3) An approximate method was proposed to compute LBTS (Lower Bound on Time Stamp). It uses an asynchronous mechanism to eliminate disturbing of thread execution and a two-level filter mechanism to reduce redundant LBTS computation. A series of experiments with a modified phold model show that HPSK can achieve good performance for applications on different conditions. It can run 8x faster than mu sik when event locality and lookahead is low.

Generative coordination environments supporting parallel discrete event simulation

The utilization of coordination languages based on the generative paradigm for supporting the implementation of parallel discrete-event simulators is considered. A parallel simulation methodology called Active-events (ActE) which is based on a sophisticated generative coordination model is proposed in order to make the task of designing a parallel simulator easier and to fully exploit the capabilities of coordination languages. An implementation of mechanisms of the coordination model by relying on the Linda coordination language is proposed. A simulator for queuing models based on ActE and developed in the coordination framework thus resulting is experimentally studied to assess the suitability of different mechanisms which implement the particular object retrieval criterion of the coordination model. This paper presents a parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) environment using graphics processing unit (GPU) to simulate cellular models described by the discrete event system specification (DEVS). The DEVS is a general system specification, and it helps the modeler to verify and validate the model. The parallel simulation algorithm for simulating the DEVS model has been well studied, and based on the simulation algorithm, the operations of DEVS cellular models and their relative simulators are processed in parallel using the GPU. The algorithm of managing the event-list and routing output events in the DEVS simulation is revised to be processed in parallel considering the features of the GPU. The performance analysis and the experimental result are provided to demonstrate the increased speed of the proposed PDES using the GPU as compared to the PDES using the CPU in a large-scale cellular model simulation.

parallel discrete event simulation (PDEs) is an important technology for studying large-scale complex systems[1]. And there are some problems in the present PDEs modeling, such as poor intuitiveness, low efficiency, difficulty in expansion and reuse, insufficient support of modeling environment for model checking, difficulty in model checking and so on. For these problems, a parallel discrete event simulation modeling method, named Object Class Interaction Graph(OCIG), based on basic event graph and object-oriented thinking is proposed. It has the natural and simple advantages of event graph modeling for discrete event simulation, and it can well meet the requirements of scalable, easy assembly, and layered parallelism for parallel discrete event simulation applications. The article also uses the set theory to formally define it, laying the foundation for the subsequent formal checking of the model [2].
