In this paper we use and extend a parallel optoelectronic processor for image preprocessing and implement software tools for testing and evaluating the presented algorithms. After briefly introducing the processor and showing how images can be stored in it, we adapt a number of local image preprocessing algorithms for smoothing, edge detection, and corner detection, such that they can be executed on the processor in parallel. These algorithms are performed on all pixels of the input image in parallel and, as a result, in steps independent of its dimensions. We also develop a compiler and a simulator for evaluating and verifying the correctness of our implementations. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

parallel computing on cloud infrastructure had gained tremendous attention and popularity in recent years. In this paper, we propose a new technique to encrypt an image for secure image transmission and parallel decryption using cloud resources. The encoding of the image is done using the FFT conjugate complex property and private random phase key value shared between sender and receiver. First, using FFT complex conjugate property, we construct a two dimensional matrix consisting of real and imaginary portion of the image. Second, we encrypt the complex conjugate matrix using private random phase key value shared between sender and receiver. Detailed simulations have been carried out to test the encryption algorithm. Furthermore, we use cloud resources for the development of an efficient parallel image encryption and decryption algorithm. Significant speedup was achieved using different image size and number of cloud servers.

This paper presents a minimally intrusive real-time gaze-tracking prototype to be used in several scenarios, including a laboratory stall and an in-vehicle system. The system requires specific infrared illumination to allow it to work with variable light conditions. However, it is minimally intrusive due to the use of a carefully configured switched infrared LED array. Although the perceived level of illumination generated by this array is high, it is achieved using low-emision infrared light beams. Accuracy is achieved through a precise estimate of the center of the user's pupil. To overcome inherent time restrictions while using low-cost processors, its main image-processing algorithm has been distributed over four main computing tasks. This structure not only enables good performance, but also simplifies the task of experimenting with alternative computationally-complex algorithms and with alternative tracking models based on locating both user eyes and several cameras to improve user mobility.

We present a high performance embedding environment for developing vision based vehicle/robot controlling. This particular environment is consisted of two main parts as recognition part and control part. Former can conducts vision based recognition targets such as obstacle detection while latter can controls the vehicle/robot in real time following the recognition information. The tests were conducted to confirm the performance of the proposed embedding environment, installing it on a wheel robot. Here, the test was conduct to stop the moving robot when an obstacle appeared suddenly. In the experiments, system could conduct obstacle detection as well as motor controlling effectively in order to stop the robot.

Development of FPGA-based, network-enabled embedded systems in Register Transfer Level hardware description languages is tedious. Despite the automation of this process with numerous EDA tools available, no well-established design patterns exist. Moreover, the entire production cycle requires appropriate theoretical background and hardware design intuition from the developer which discourages the software community. To improve productivity and minimize time to market when assembling such systems, we propose a new hardware/software co-design approach to building reconfigurable hardware web services. The proposed integrated development platform features a programmable FPGA board where computations of different nature and purpose are logically distributed among a sequential soft-core processor program, a massively parallel accelerator and an independent communication module that handles remote clients' requests. Our second contribution is a set of tools that make the development of the aforementioned services essentially a software design undertaking with the extensive use of high-level programming languages. The platform has been tuned to act as a flexible runtime environment for image processing services, thus providing functionality of an intelligent camera. Two example services built from scratch according to the new methodology are discussed. Reduced development time and significant performance gain observed prove validity of the proposed approach and unveil a large potential of the assembled prototype.

The processing of large hyperspectral images presents challenges from both memory usage and computation points of view. Large images require proper partitioning in order to be stored in memory and to exploit the benefits of parallel implementation on high performance computing architectures. This paper analyzes several variants of reading and distributing large images and presents critical issues and some corresponding solutions in designing efficient parallel implementations of two clustering algorithms which use both spectral and spatial information. All experiments were conducted on a BlueGene/P supercomputer using up to 1024 processors.

Real-time image and video processing applications require skilled architects, and recent trends in the hardware platform make the design and implementation of these applications increasingly complex. Many frameworks and libraries have been proposed or commercialized to simplify the design and tuning of real-time image processing applications. However, they tend to lack flexibility because they are normally oriented towards particular types of applications, or they impose specific data processing models such as the pipeline. Other issues include large memory footprints, difficulty for reuse and inefficient execution on multicore processors. This paper presents a novel software architecture for real-time image and video processing applications which addresses these issues. The architecture is divided into three layers: the platform abstraction layer, the messaging layer, and the application layer. The platform abstraction layer provides a high level application programming interface for the rest of the architecture. The messaging layer provides a message passing interface based on a dynamic publish/subscribe pattern. A topic-based filtering in which messages are published to topics is used to route the messages from the publishers to the subscribers interested in a particular type of messages. The application layer provides a repository for reusable application modules designed for real-time image and video processing applications. These modules, which include acquisition, visualization, communication, user interface and data processing modules, take advantage of the power of other well-known libraries such as OpenCV, Intel IPP, or CUDA. Finally, we present different prototypes and applications to show the possibilities of the proposed architecture.

General purpose graphics processing units (GPGPUs) contain many execution units, thus they are very attractive for high speed image processing. However, the error diffusion halftoning algorithm can hardly exploit the benefit of massively parallel processing architecture because this algorithm uses feedback of the output error as well as the results of neighboring pixels. In this study, pixels that can be processed without dependency are found by examining the dependency graph. Also, a parallel processing method requiring less synchronization overhead is developed by considering the characteristics of GPGPUs.

A Grid framework to enable parallel and concurrent TMA image analyses

The Grid represents a great opportunity for the scientific community to solve computing intensive problems and share data. To actually allow its use, it is necessary to provide specific tools and enable a simplified exploitation of Grid resources. We address these topics in bioinformatics community to process images obtained through Tissue MicroArray technique. We developed Grid Framework for Tissue Microarray Analysis, shortly GF4TMA, that allows the selection and the analysis of TMA images on the Grid. In particular, users can analyse several images concurrentely, and analyses are performed in parallel using parallel image processing GEnoa Library, shortly PIMA(GE) 2 Lib. Therefore GF4TMA enables two levels of parallelism, the scheduling and the parallelism of the analyses are hidden to the users. A particular emphasis is posed on the two levels of parallelism provided by GF4TMA, and its effectiveness is discussed simulating different scenarios in Grid.
