Data generation, collection, and processing is an important workload of modern computer architectures. Stream or high-intensity data flow applications are commonly employed in extracting and interpreting the information contained in this data. Due to the computational complexity of these applications, high-performance ought to be achieved using parallel computing. Indeed, the efficient exploitation of available parallel resources from the architecture remains a challenging task for the programmers. Techniques and methodologies are required to help shift the efforts from the complexity of parallelism exploitation to specific algorithmic solutions. To tackle this problem, we propose a methodology that provides the developer with a suitable abstraction layer between a clean and effective parallel programming interface targeting different multi-core parallel programming frameworks. We used standard C++ code annotations that may be inserted in the source code by the programmer. Then, a compiler parses C++ code with the annotations and generates calls to the desired parallel runtime API. Our experiments demonstrate the feasibility of our methodology and the performance of the abstraction layer, where the difference is negligible in four applications with respect to the state-of-the-art C++ parallel programming frameworks. Additionally, our methodology allows improving the application performance since the developers can choose the runtime that best performs in their system. © 2020 ACM.

The paper considers the software approach to solving the Fredholm integral equation of the first kind by the Tikhonov regularization method, which uses the properties of modern architectures of computing systems as multi-core and the standard of parallel programming of OpenMP. A numerical algorithm for solving a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind is proposed such as the Tikhonov regularization method. It is based on the method of collocation under conditions of piecewise constant approximation of the desired function. When choosing even this most economical method of approximation, we obtain systems of linear algebraic equations of large dimensions with densely filled matrices to achieve the necessary accuracy. The variation of the error is analyzed, depending on the choice of the regularization parameter, which is selected experimentally. In order to optimize the computational process, the procedure for solving the integral equation is compared with the use of the OpenMP parallel programming technique. Improved acceleration and performance. The results, which indicate the possibility of further optimization of the computational process due to the variation in the number of parallel streams and computer processor cores, are obtained. A series of numerical experiments that confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed approach to numerical solution of Fredholm integral equations of the first kind. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

In 2018, the "Govorun"supercomputer was put into operation at the Laboratory of Information Technologies and is currently used to solve a wide range of tasks facing the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The "Govorun"supercomputer is a heterogeneous computing environment that contains Intel CPUs of different types and NVIDIA Tesla V100 graphics accelerators. The heterogeneous structure of the supercomputer allows users to choose optimal computing architectures for solving their tasks. One of the features of modern scientific tasks, both in the field of theoretical studies and tasks related to experimental data processing, is the analysis of large amounts of data. To accelerate the processing of big arrays of data, a hierarchical hyper-converged data processing and storage system with a software-defined architecture was implemented on the "Govorun"supercomputer. According to the speed of accessing data, the system is divided into layers that are available for the user's choice. Each layer of the developed data storage system can be used both independently and as part of data processing workflows. It is noteworthy that a part of the cold storage is managed by the geographically distributed EOS file system, which allows one to connect the data processing and storage system implemented on the "Govorun"supercomputer to geographically distributed storages, the so-called DataLakes. The implemented hierarchical data processing and storage system provides the low time of data access and a data read/write speed of 300 Gb/s. The heterogeneous structure of the supercomputer and the implemented hierarchical data processing and storage system enables the cardinal speed-up of research underway at the Institute. The article describes some examples of using the resources of the "Govorun"supercomputer. Reductions constitute a frequent algorithmic pattern in high-performance and scientific computing. Sophisticated techniques are needed to ensure their correct and scalable concurrent execution on modern processors. Reductions on large arrays represent the most demanding case where traditional approaches are not always applicable due to low performance scalability. To address these challenges, we propose RICH, a runtime-assisted solution that relies on architectural and parallel programming model extensions. RICH updates the reduction variable directly in the cache hierarchy with the help of added in-cache functional units. Our programming model extensions fit with the most relevant parallel programming solutions for shared memory environments like OpenMP. RICH does not modify the ISA, which allows the use of algorithms with reductions from pre-compiled external libraries. Experiments show that our solution achieves the performance improvements of 11.2% on average, compared to the state-of-the-art hardware-based approaches, while it introduces 2.4% area and 3.8% power overhead. © 2020 ACM.

DVM-system is designed for the development of parallel programs of scientific and technical computations in C-DVMH and Fortran-DVMH languages. These languages use a single parallel programming model (DVMH model) and are extensions of the standard C and Fortran languages with parallelism specifications, written in the form of directives to the compiler. The DVMH model makes it possible to create efficient parallel programs for heterogeneous computing clusters, in the nodes of which accelerators (graphic processors or Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors) can be used as computing devices along with universal multi-core processors. Image processing promotes many of the technological advancements these days. The main aspect while performing image processing operations is the time taken to deal with the application of different routines on these images. Thus, time is an important criterion for the efficiency of the systems. With the given situation, the idea of giving images to the processors and then depending upon code all the cores will be either dealing with one image and performing operations on the image or distributing the images to each core to perform the operations. This uses the idea of parallel programming i.e. the use of all computer resources that are cores here. The paper focuses on implementing different image-enhancing techniques integrated into a system that will execute it on single as well as multiple cores. The image processing operations implemented sequentially as well as parallelly in this paper are Image Blurring, Edge Detection, Contrast Stretching, and Image Negation the average speed for all the operations obtained when executed on multiple cores are 9.94, 9.54, 11.12, and 11.21 respectively. © 2020 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose built-in functions on parallel programming model in SMYLE OpenCL to extend the original OpenCL semantics giving our system's original limitation and interpretation for embedded many-core architecture. On a platform using FPGA to evaluate embedded many-core architecture SMYLEref, data parallel and task parallel programming models supported by the OpenCL execution model are implemented. Then, high-level API based on an OpenCL framework, named SMYLE OpenCL, has been developed. Math functions, integer functions, common functions, geometric functions, relational functions, and barrier function of synchronization functions in built-in functions are implemented for OpenCL version 1.2. And the routines for floating point emulation are developed in order to compute the ranges of float and double on the device core which OS is not installed in. This paper describes the design and its implementation of built-in functions on parallel programming model in SMYLE OpenCL, and shows how to solve the implementation issues. The high-speed low-power performance using parallel benchmark applications compared with a former technology is demonstrated.

Traditional programming languages for parallel computer systems do not efficiently separate the algorithm description from the details of its hardware implementation. As a result, a significant code modification is required to port the same algorithm from one computational architecture to another. To simplify and speed up the porting procedure, an architecture-independent Set@l programming language based on the aspect-oriented programming paradigm and set-theoretical code view is proposed to be used. In contrast to conventional parallel programming tools, Set@l defines the information structure of a problem as sets, subsets of different types and relations between them. Various aspects of implementation such as processing method, parallelization, optimization and others transform an architecture-independent source code according to the certain architecture and configuration of the computer system. Set@l offers new opportunities for efficient architecture- and resource-independent parallel programming. It ensures porting of parallel applications without the source code modification, transitions between different algorithm implementations with regard to the computer system’s features or user’s preferences, and the indefinite description of calculations. This paper deals with the essential techniques and specificities of algorithm parallelization in the Set@l aspect-oriented programs. The demonstrated examples are adopted from programs in the Set@l language. The lower-upper decomposition code demonstrates the conversion of set types by parallelism during the architectural adaptation, and the Jacobi algorithm code introduces indefinite collections (classes and semisets) for the description of effective computing structure for reconfigurable computer systems. In addition, we consider several instances of memory use for the organization of parallel calculations. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

The XCS classifier system (XCS) constitutes the most deeply investigated evolutionary rule-based machine learning algorithm. Due to its online learning nature, it is not as computationally intense as deep learning approaches. However, in order to increase XCS's realtime capabilities, it is worth to improve its runtime for the inference step. A iteration through XCS's main loop involves various steps. Among them, matching usually constitutes the computationally most expensive part. Various ways for improvements have been proposed, e.g. using specialized hardware or vector commands. However, existing approaches require either a certain hardware coupled with a specific instruction set, or a dedicated multiprocessing programming language. In this context, parallel programs are often evaluated in terms of their speed up, but it turns out that qualitative criteria such as flexibility and independence of a specific hardware are also relevant. We therefore present a generic parallel approach for matching. We only rely on the minimum assumption of a multicore CPU with standard synchronization mechanisms, e.g., locks. Those assumptions are satisfied in almost all modern computing systems and high-level programming languages today. Thus we show that our approaches cannot only decrease the runtime, but are also reusable for most learning classifier systems and computing systems. © 2020 ACM.

The British Geological Survey's global geomagnetic model, Model of the Earth's Magnetic Environment (MEME), is an important tool for calculating the strength and direction of the Earth's magnetic field, which is continually in flux. While the ability to collect data from ground-based observation sites and satellites has grown rapidly, the memory bound nature of the original code has proved a significant limitation on the size of the modelling problem required. In this paper, we describe work done replacing the bespoke, sequential, eigensolver with that of the PETSc/SLEPc package for solving the system of normal equations. Adopting PETSc/SLEPc also required fundamental changes in how we built and distributed the data structures, and as such, we describe an approach for building symmetric matrices that provides good load balance and avoids the need for close coordination between the processes or replication of work. We also study the memory bound nature of the code from an irregular memory accesses perspective and combine detailed profiling with software cache prefetching to significantly optimise this. Performance and scaling characteristics are explored on ARCHER, a Cray XC30, where we achieved a speed up for the solver of 294 times by replacing the model's bespoke approach with SLEPc. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
