The main objective of this work consists in analyzing sub-structuring method for the parallel solution of sparse linear systems with matrices arising from the discretization of partial differential equations such as finite element, finite volume and finite difference. With the success encountered by the general-purpose processing on graphics processing units (GPGPU), we develop an hybrid multiGPUs and CPUs sub-structuring algorithm. GPU computing, with CUDA, is used to accelerate the operations performed on each processor. Numerical experiments have been performed on a set of matrices arising from engineering problems. We compare C+MPI implementation on classical CPU cluster with C+MPI+CUDA on a cluster of GPU. The performance comparison shows a speed-up for the sub-structuring method up to 19 times in double precision by using CUDA.

parallel and distributed computing (PDC) has become ubiquitous to the extent that even common users depend on parallel programming. This points to the need for every programmer to understand how parallelism and distributed programming affect problem solving, teaching only traditional sequential programming is no longer sufficient. To address the rapidly widening gap between emerging highly-parallel computer architectures and the sequential programming approach taught in traditional CS/CE courses, the Computer Science Department at Tennessee Technological University has integrated PDC into their introductory programming course sequence. This paper presents our implementation efforts, experience and lessons learned, as well as preliminary evaluation results.

We propose to strengthen the computer science (CS) curriculum by embedding parallel concepts in a required first-semester seminar taken by all incoming declared CS majors. We introduce students to parallel computing concepts through a series of unplugged activities so that students see parallel approaches as a natural form of solution to a task. We describe a pilot offering of the class and activities, with measurements and analysis of what students self-report and their performance on assessments.

parallel and distributed computing (PDC) is included in the Computer Science Curriculum 2013 from ACM and IEEE Computer Science and hence required for ABET Computer Science programs, 2019 to 2020. It is a challenge to incorporate PDC into an existing full Computer Science program. In this paper, we examine the feasibility and challenges of introducing PDC thinking at the lower level or upper level and evaluate the effectiveness of various PDC learning and teaching methodologies. Further, we propose possible teaching strategies and techniques for introducing PDC topics for both lower and upper-level undergraduate students.

This paper proposes a method for reducing the number of search nodes involved in the solution of queries arriving to a Web search engine. The method is applied by the query receptionist machine during situations of sudden peaks in query traffic to reduce the load on the search nodes. The experimental evaluation based on actual traces from users of a major search engine, shows that the proposed method outperforms alternative strategies. This is more evident for systems composed of a large number of search nodes which indicates that the method is also more scalable than the alternative strategies. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

This paper proposes parallel canonical differential evolutionary particle swarm optimization (C-DEEPSO) for voltage and reactive power control (Volt Var Control: VVC). The problem can be formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem (MINLP) and various evolutionary computation techniques have been applied to the problem including PSO, differential evolution (DE), and DEEPSO. Since VVC is one of the on-line controls, speed-up of computation is required. Moreover, there is still room for improvement on solution quality. This paper proposes parallel C-DEEPSO in order to speed up the calculation and improve solution quality and applies it to a VVC problem. The proposed method is applied to IEEE 118 bus system. The results indicate that the proposed method can realize fast computation and minimize active power losses more than conventional evolutionary computation techniques. Heterogeneous architectures have emerged as a dominant platform, not only in high-performance computing but also in mobile processing, cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoTs). Because the undergraduate computer science curriculum is over-crowded in its current state, it is difficult to include a new course as a required part of the curriculum without increasing the number of hours to graduation. Integration of heterogeneous computing content requires a module-based approach, such as those undertaken for introducing parallel and distributed computing. In this paper, we present a teaching module that introduces CS1 students to some of the fundamental concepts in heterogeneous computing. The goal of this module is not to teach students how to program heterogeneous systems but rather expose them to this emerging trend and prepare them for material they are expected to see in future classes. Although concepts are covered at a high-level, the module emphasizes active learning and includes a lab assignment that provides students with hands-on experience with respect to task mapping and performance evaluation of a heterogeneous system. The module was implemented at our home institution in Fall 2018. Initial evaluation results are quite encouraging both in terms of learning outcomes and student engagement and interest.

Voltage and reactive power control (VRPC) is one of Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) problems. Evolutionary computation (EC) based VRPC methods have been developed for solving VRPC problems. Since VRPC is an online control, it is necessary to solve a VRPC problem in a limited VRPC interval. Recently, high level of renewable energy penetration and progress of deregulation in power systems require to shorten the VRPC interval and to solve a large-scale VRPC problem in the VRPC interval. Namely, Fast calculation is required in VRPC. Application of parallel and distributed computing (PDC) is a practical option for solving this challenge. However, since power system is a social infrastructure, a dependable method is required for keeping quality of solutions even if several servers cannot return the calculation results due to various faults. When PDC is applied to an EC method using multi-population (MP), there are two ways for realization of parallel computation, namely sub-population based parallel multi-population (PMP) and individual based PMP. No papers have ever compared the two methods from a dependability point of view. This paper presents comparative evaluation of dependability for VRPC by modified brain storm optimization (MBSO) using the individual and the sub-population based PMP. Simulation results with an IEEE 118 bus bench mark system indicate higher dependability of the method using the individual based PMP than the method using sub-population based PMP.

Exceptions and errors occurring within mission critical applications due to hardware failures have a high cost. With the emerging Next Generation Platforms (NGPs), the rate of hardware failures will likely increase. Therefore, designing our applications to be resilient is a critical concern in order to retain the reliability of results while meeting the constraints on power budgets. In this paper, we discuss software resilience in AMTs at both local and distributed scale. We choose HPX to prototype our resiliency designs. We implement two resiliency APIs that we expose to the application developers, namely task replication and task replay. Task replication repeats a task n-times and executes them asynchronously. Task replay reschedules a task up to n-times until a valid output is returned. Furthermore, we expose algorithm based fault tolerance (ABFT) using user provided predicates (e.g., checksums) to validate the returned results. We benchmark the resiliency scheme for both synthetic and real world applications at local and distributed scale and show that most of the added execution time arises from the replay, replication or data movement of the tasks and not the boilerplate code added to achieve resilience.

The increase in the amount of data is evident in recent times. The amount of data stored and retrieved is increasing at a fast rate. Processing text data consumes large amount of memory in terms of storage and extraction. Sorting the stored data is one of the most favorable methods that can be used in order to increase the efficiency of extracting stored data. Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) have evolved from being used as dedicated graphic rendering modules to being used to exploit fast parallelism for large computational purposes. The use of GPUs for sorting strings large in size has produced effective and fast results when compared to using CPUs. This paper produces a comparative study on the most popular and efficient string sorting algorithms that have been implemented on CPU and GPU machines. This paper also proposes an efficient parallel multi-key quicksort implementation which uses ternary search tree in order to increase the speed up and efficiency of sorting large set of string data.
