Event-aware dynamic time step synchronization method for distributed moving object simulation

In computer simulation of a large number of moving objects (MOs), how to enlarge At (the interval between the simulation time steps) without introducing causality errors is one of the primary keys to enhancing performance. Causality errors can be avoided by using the same At among related MOs when they are in the scene of detection (SoD). But in a large-scale MO simulation, MOs interact with one another in a complicated manner requiring a large calculation cost to predict the beginning time of SoD. In this paper we propose an event-aware dynamic time step synchronization method (DTSS) for distributed MO simulation, which increases At without introducing causality errors and speeds up the simulation. DTSS can be implemented with little calculation cost because: (1) DTSS does not calculate the beginning time of SoD exactly, but calculates the time for possible entry into SoD with a simple mechanisim, and (2) MO simulation consists of a "movement"-phase and a "detection"-phase in which the distance-calculation between MOs requires a heavy load, and DTSS utilizes the distance values to calculate At. In this paper, we also discuss a suitable HLA based time management mechanism to implement DTSS on a distributed computing environment. In the performance evaluation of DTSS. the calculation cost of DTSS is implemented by using the HLA suitable time management mechanism. The results show that DTSS can be executed within the ideal time plus its 1% over-cost when a basic scenario of war-game simulation is employed. Therefore if the ratio of SoD to the total simulation is small, the execution time is expected to decrease to nearly this ratio. we also introduce the criterion for determining when DTSS is superior to the conventional method by using the performance evaluation results. The results presented in this paper are effectively utilized when DTSS is applied to practical applications.

Un-identical federate replication structure for improving performance of HLA-based simulations

The execution of an HLA-based simulation (federation) is usually time consuming, as it usually involves a number of compute-intensive simulation components (federates). To improve simulation performance, an un-identical federate replication structure is proposed in this article. For the same federate, multiple replicas are developed in software diversity manner by employing different synchronization approaches. The simulation performance is improved by always choosing the fastest replica to represent the federate in the federation. The replication structure is implemented in a transparent manner without increasing federation scale. Message exchange and time management mechanisms are developed to handle the different behaviors of those un-identical replicas. Correctness of the replication structure is proved in theory and verified by experiments. The experimental results have also shown that the un-identical federate replication structure achieves significant performance enhancement with good scalability and marginal overhead. An automated parallel simulation flow for cyber-physical system design

parallel and distributed simulation (PDS) is often employed to tackle the computational intensity of system-level simulation of real-world complex embedded and cyber-physical systems (CPSs). However, CPS models comprise heterogeneous components with diverge semantics for which incompatible PDS approaches are developed. We propose an automated PDS flow based on a formal modeling framework-with necessary extensions-targeting heterogeneous embedded and CPS design. The proposed flow characterizes the sequential executable specification of a heterogeneous model and generates a PDS cluster. State-of-the-art graph partitioning methods are adopted and a new extensible constraint-base formulation of the model partitioning problem is developed. The applicability, effectiveness, and scalability of the proposed flow is demonstrated using case studies.

An ultra-large-scale simulation framework

Many modern systems involve complex interactions between a large number of diverse entities that constitute these systems. Unfortunately, these large, complex systems frequently defy analysis by conventional analytical methods and their study is generally performed using simulation models. Further aggravating the situation, detailed simulations of large systems will frequently require days, weeks, or even months of computer time and lead to scaled down studies. These scaled down studies may be achieved by the creation of smaller, representative, models and/or by analysis with short duration simulation exercises. Unfortunately, scaled down simulation studies will frequently fail to exhibit behaviors of the full-scale system under study. Consequently, better simulation infrastructure is needed to support the analysis of ultra-large (models containing over 1 million components)-scale models. simulation support for ultra-large-scale simulation models must be achieved using low-cost commodity computer systems. The expense of custom or high-end parallel systems prevent their widespread use. Consequently, we have developed an Ultra-large-Scale simulation Framework (USSF). This paper presents the issues involved in the design and development of USSF. parallel simulation techniques are used to enable optimal time versus resource tradeoffs in USSF. The techniques employed in the framework to reduce and regulate the memory requirements of the simulations are described. The API needed for model development is illustrated. The results obtained from the experiments conducted using various system models with two parallel simulation kernels (comparing a conventional approach with USSF) are also presented. Platform design for large-scale artificial market simulation and preliminary evaluation on the K computer

Artificial market simulations have the potential to be a strong tool for studying rapid and large market fluctuations and designing financial regulations. High-frequency traders, that exchange multiple assets simultaneously within a millisecond, are said to be a cause of rapid and large market fluctuations. For such a large-scale problem, this paper proposes a software or computing platform for large-scale and high-frequency artificial market simulations (Plham:/pl Lambda m). The computing platform, Plham, enables modeling financial markets composed of various brands of assets and a large number of agents trading on a short timescale. The design feature of Plham is the separation of artificial market models (simulation models) from their execution (execution models). This allows users to define their simulation models without parallel computing expertise and to choose one of the execution models they need. This computing platform provides a prototype execution model for parallel simulations, which exploits the variety in trading frequency among traders, that is, the fact that some traders do not require up-to-date information of markets changing in millisecond order. We evaluated a prototype implementation on the K computer using up to 256 computing nodes.

On the CRAY-system random number generator

We present a theoretical and empirical analysis of the quality of the CRAY-system random number generator RANF in parallel settings. Subsequences of this generator are used to obtain parallel streams of random numbers for each processor. We use the spectral test to analyze the quality of lagged subsequences of RANF with step sizes 2(l), l greater than or equal to 1, appropriate for CRAY systems. Our results demonstrate that with increasing l, the quality of lagged subsequences is strongly reduced in comparison to the original sequence. The results are supported by a numerical Monte Carlo integration study. We also use the spectral test to exhibit the well known long-range correlations between consecutive blocks of random numbers obtained from RANF.

Supply Chain simulation using Business Process Modeling in Service Oriented Architecture

For supply chain optimization, as a key determinant of strategic resources mobility along the value-added chain, simulation is widely used to test the impact on supply chain performance for the strategic level decisions, such as the number of plants, the modes of transport, or the relocation of warehouses. Traditionally, a single centralized model that encompasses multiple participants in the supply chain is built when optimization of the supply chain through simulation is required. However, due to the heterogeneity of supply chain, a centralized simulation model has a limit to reflect the dynamics of each supply chain participant. This research focuses on the conceptual and the technical issues about the supply chain simulation with a parallel and distributed simulation (PADS) concept. In particular, to ensure the decomposition of supply chain simulation model by each supply chain participant, the simulation framework is proposed using Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) in e-collaboration environment. For a clear proof of concept, the virtual supply chain simulation model is implemented and experienced using business process modeling tools in SOA. Due to the reusable, interoperable, and scalable characteristics of the proposed supply chain simulation framework, various alternatives for supply chin optimization can be generated and evaluated.

Mobile agent technology has been applied to develop the solutions for various kinds of parallel and distributed computing problems. However, performance evaluation of mobile agent algorithms remains a difficult task, mainly due to the characteristics of mobile agents such as distributed and asynchronous execution, autonomy and mobility. This paper proposes a general approach based on direct execution simulation for evaluating the performance of mobile agent algorithms by collecting and analyzing the information about the agents during their execution. We describe the proposed generic simulation model, named MADES, the architecture of a software environment based on MADES, and a prototype implementation. A mobile agent-based distributed load balancing algorithm has been used for experiments with the prototype.

This paper presents main concepts and issues concerned with the simulation of Internet of Things (IoT). The heterogeneity of possible scenarios, arising from the massive deployment of an enormous amount of sensors and devices, imposes the use of sophisticated modeling and simulation techniques. In fact, the simulation of IoT introduces several issues from both quantitative and qualitative aspects. We discuss novel simulation techniques to enhance scalability and to permit the real-time execution of massively populated IoT environments (e.g., large-scale smart cities). In particular, we claim that agent-based, adaptive parallel and distributed simulation (PADS) approaches are needed, together with multi-level simulation, which provide means to perform highly detailed simulations, on demand. We present a use case concerned with the simulation of smart territories.

The parallel simulation of biochemical reactions is a very interesting problem: biochemical systems are inherently parallel, yet the majority of the algorithms to simulate them, including the well-known and widespread Gillespie SSA, are strictly sequential. Here we investigate, in a general way, how to characterize the simulation of biochemical systems in terms of Discrete Event simulation. We dissect their inherent parallelism in order both to exploit the work done in this area and to speed-up their simulation. We study the peculiar characteristics of discrete biological simulations in order to select the parallelization technique which provides the greater benefits, as well as to touch its limits. We then focus on reaction-diffusion systems: we design and implement an efficient parallel algorithm for simulating such systems that include both reactions between entities and movements throughout the space.
