The customers' data of Telecommunication Companies represent a powerful tool to explore their behaviour and then to increase their satisfaction. The data produced is too large to extract on time useful information, which could be beneficial for both sides, companies and customers. One of the solutions to explore this data is representing it by the adoption of clustering techniques. In this work, two distributed / multi-core versions of clustering algorithms were used, namely DBSCAN and k-means, which both of them cluster data according to its characteristics. While DBSCAN is a density-based spatial clustering algorithm and groups data based on the minimum size of participating objects per cluster and the minimum required distance between them, k-means clusters the data objects according the pre-desired number of groups. Thus, since the two methods use different roads to group the data objects, they form different clusters but each one has its importance depending on the characteristics of the applied method. The experiment results of both proposed distributed / multi-core techniques proved their efficiency.

In this paper, the authors propose an analysis of the frequency response function in a car compartment, subject to some fluctuating pressure distribution along the open cavity of the sun-roof at the top of a car. Coupling of a computational fluid dynamics and of a computational acoustics code is considered to simulate the acoustic fluid-structure interaction problem. Iterative Krylov methods and domain decomposition methods, tuned on Graphic Processing Unit (GPU), are considered to solve the acoustic problem with complex number arithmetics with double precision. Numerical simulations illustrate the efficiency, robustness and accuracy of the proposed approaches.

The adoption of commodity clusters has been widely extended due to its cost-effectiveness and the evolution of networks. These systems can be used to reduce the long execution time of applications that require a vast amount of computational resources, and especially of those techniques that are usually deployed in centralized environments, like testing. Currently, one of the main challenges in testing is to obtain an appropriate test suite. Mutation testing is a widely used technique aimed at generating high quality test suites. However, the execution of this technique requires a high computational cost. In this work we propose OUTRIDER, an HPC-based optimization that contributes to bridging the gap between the high computational cost of mutation testing and the parallel infrastructures of HPC systems aimed to speed-up the execution of computational applications. This optimization is based on our previous work called EMINENT, an algorithm focused on parallelizing the mutation testing process using MPI. However, since EMINENT does not efficiently exploit the computational resources in HPC systems, we propose 4 strategies to alleviate this issue. A thorough experimental study using different applications shows an increase of up to 70% performance improvement using these optimizations. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B. V.

This paper proposes dependable parallel multi-swarm canonical differential evolutionary particle swarm optimization with migration (DPMS-CDEEPSOw/M) for voltage and reactive power control (Volt/Var Control: VVC). The proposed DPMS-CDEEPSOw/M is a general evolutionary computation technique for dependable and fast optimization applications. So far, applications of evolutionary computation methods such as Genetic Algorithm (GA), advanced PSOs, and Differential Evolution (DE) have been studied to VVC because VVC is a mixed integer nonlinear optimization programming (MINLP) problem. Considering recent progress of deregulated environment and large renewable energy penetration in power systems, Fast VVC is strongly needed. Utilization of parallel and distributed computing may solve the challenge. However, since power system is a social infrastructure, both fast computation and sustainable (dependable) control are eagerly awaited for VVC. A multi-swarm evolutionary computation technique is verified to improve quality of solution. Therefore, its application to VVC has a possibility to increase dependability. The simulation results indicate that the proposed DPMS-CDEEPSOw/M based method can speed up computation and improve dependability by comparison with the conventional dependable parallel C-DEEPSO based method. This paper presents the design, implementation and experimental evaluation of DIOS (distributed Interactive Object Substrate), an interactive object infrastructure to enable the runtime monitoring, interaction and computational steering of parallel and distributed applications. DIOS enables application objects (data structures, algorithms) to be enhanced with sensors and actuators so that they can be interrogated and controlled. Application objects may be distributed (spanning many processors) and dynamic (be created, deleted, changed or migrated). Furthermore, DIOS provides a control network that interconnects the interactive objects in a parallel/distributed application and enables external discovery, interrogation, monitoring and manipulation of these objects at runtime. DIOS is currently being used to enable interactive visualization, monitoring and steering of a wide range of scientific applications, including oil reservoir, compressible turbulence and numerical relativity simulations. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) computing, the harnessing of idle compute cycles through Internet, offers new research challenges in the domain of distributed computing. In this paper, we propose an efficient computing resource discovery mechanism based on a balanced multi-way tree structure capable of supporting both exact and range queries, efficiently. Likewise, a rebalancing algorithm is proposed. By means of simulation, we evaluated our proposal in relation to other approaches of the literature. Our results reveal the good performance of our proposals.

We establish a general fault-tolerance property for the interesting hierarchical cubic networks, when a linear number of vertices are removed from such a network. As its application, we discuss and derive several connectivity results of its underlying graph, including its restricted connectivity, cyclic vertex-connectivity, component connectivity, and conditional diagnosability. These results demonstrate several fault-tolerance properties of the hierarchical cubic networks.

P2P workflow systems meet the development trend of workflow systems. The running path optimization (the path with the minimum running time which consists of the services discovery time and the task execution time) in full-distribution (decentralized) environments has been a bottleneck restricting the performance of P2P workflow systems. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposes a innovative hybrid P2P location network by introducing a novel structured P2P network which effectively reduces the service discovery time with one hop routing and the search bandwidth with 100% location precision at each step and a novel decentralized workload balance network which optimizes the tasks execution time at each step with little churns of network to P2P workflow systems for the first time to fit the global optimal running path with the sequence of the optimal single running steps.

Scientific workloads often require scalable computing resources. The traditional HPC paradigm provides large scale computing resources but requires IT specialists to buy and maintain large computer infrastructure in their organization. With the emergence of cloud computing, more and more scientists and engineers are moving their computing workloads from local clusters to public cloud. However, such a migration often requires experience both in understanding cloud architecture and cloud development skills, which can impede the efficiency and success of migration. This paper presents a cloud-based parallel and distributed computing platform to support scientific computing. With the Simulation Runner, scientists only need to submit their embarrassingly parallel scientific applications with appropriate arguments or parameters. There is no need to rebuild migrate cloud applications or purchase large computer infrastructures by themselves. The system also uses a file caching mechanism to improve performance and reduce the costs of data-intensive computing tasks. A 44X speedup was resulted from using 128 computing instances compared with premise high performance desktop computers. A comparison study on the performance of file cache is given at the end of the paper.

Generally, image rendering requires high computing capacity. It is really time consuming to render a movie on a single machine. The use of multiple machines to render a move requires much effort to control the workflow and data. With the emergence of cloud computing, more and more scientists and engineers are moving their tasks from laboratories to public clouds. This migration requires some sort experience on both the cloud architecture and coding in the cloud. This paper proposes a simple service to render movies on Microsoft Azure that accelerates movie rendering. This service, called AzureRender, also introduces task parallelism and cache management to improve performance and reduce cost. A comparative study on image rendering performance and cost between Microsoft Azure and desktop machines is given at the end of the paper.
