Generally, image rendering requires high computing capacity. It is really time consuming to render a movie on a single machine. The use of multiple machines to render a move requires much effort to control the workflow and data. With the emergence of cloud computing, more and more scientists and engineers are moving their tasks from laboratories to public clouds. This migration requires some sort experience on both the cloud architecture and coding in the cloud. This paper proposes a simple service to render movies on Microsoft Azure that accelerates movie rendering. This service, called AzureRender, also introduces task parallelism and cache management to improve performance and reduce cost. A comparative study on image rendering performance and cost between Microsoft Azure and desktop machines is given at the end of the paper.

Scientific workloads often require scalable computing resources. The traditional HPC paradigm provides large scale computing resources but requires IT specialists to buy and maintain large computer infrastructure in their organization. With the emergence of cloud computing, more and more scientists and engineers are moving their computing workloads from local clusters to public cloud. However, such a migration often requires experience both in understanding cloud architecture and cloud development skills, which can impede the efficiency and success of migration. This paper presents a cloud-based parallel and distributed computing platform to support scientific computing. With the Simulation Runner, scientists only need to submit their embarrassingly parallel scientific applications with appropriate arguments or parameters. There is no need to rebuild migrate cloud applications or purchase large computer infrastructures by themselves. The system also uses a file caching mechanism to improve performance and reduce the costs of data-intensive computing tasks. A 44X speedup was resulted from using 128 computing instances compared with premise high performance desktop computers. A comparison study on the performance of file cache is given at the end of the paper.

P2P workflow systems meet the development trend of workflow systems. The running path optimization (the path with the minimum running time which consists of the services discovery time and the task execution time) in full-distribution (decentralized) environments has been a bottleneck restricting the performance of P2P workflow systems. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposes a innovative hybrid P2P location network by introducing a novel structured P2P network which effectively reduces the service discovery time with one hop routing and the search bandwidth with 100% location precision at each step and a novel decentralized workload balance network which optimizes the tasks execution time at each step with little churns of network to P2P workflow systems for the first time to fit the global optimal running path with the sequence of the optimal single running steps.

This paper presents a parallel particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique for reactive power and voltage control (Volt/Var Control: VVC) investigating dependability. High penetration of renewable energies and deregulation of power systems force power flow to change suddenly and operators in control centers have to control voltage in wider power systems. Therefore, VVC is required to shorten the control interval and handle larger-scale power systems. One of the solutions for the problem is applications of parallel and distributed computing. Since power system is one of the infrastructures of social community, sustainable voltage control is crucial and dependability is strongly required for VVC. This paper investigates not only fast computation by parallel computation but also dependability of parallel PSO for VVC with IEEE 14, 30, 57, and 118 bus systems.

Feature extraction and tracking is a fundamental operation used in many geoscience applications. In this paper, we present a scalable method for computing and tracking features on distributed memory machines for large-scale geospatial data. We carefully apply new communication schemes to minimize the data exchanged among the computing nodes in building and updating the global connectivity information of features. We present a theoretical complexity analysis, and show that our method can significantly reduce the communication cost compared to the traditional method.

Today, the amount of data generated each year is growing exponentially, directly affecting the time required for its analysis. This problem worsens with high-dimensional datasets, such as those used in electroencephalography, so a good feature selection method and techniques that improve algorithms' efficiency are increasingly relevant. Consequently, computing time and energy consumption are reduced, which could be used to explore more solutions to the problem. However, it is also necessary to adapt the applications to take advantage of the hardware offered by high-performance computing systems. Therefore, in this work, a parallel and distributed binary particle swarm optimization algorithm has been implemented, used as a feature selection method, and applied to two real electroencephalography datasets: the University of Essex dataset and the well-known BCI Competition IV 2a dataset. The proposed method has been analyzed in a multi-node computing cluster, not only in terms of classification accuracy, but also from the energy-time point of view to study its impact depending on different experimental conditions and datasets used.

Maintaining cache coherency for B⁺ tree indexes in a shared disks cluster

A shared disks (SD) cluster couples multiple computing nodes for high performance transaction processing, and all nodes share a common database at the disk level. To reduce the number of disk access, the node may cache both data pages and index pages in its local memory buffer. In general, index pages are accessed more often and thus cached at more nodes than their corresponding data pages. Furthermore, tree-based indexes such as B+ trees require complicated operations, e.g., root-to-leaf traversal and structure modification operation due to a page split or a page concatenation. This means that it is strongly required to devise a dedicated cache coherency scheme for index pages that takes advantage of the semantics of their access. In this paper, we propose a new cache coherency scheme for B+ tree indexes in the SD cluster. The proposed scheme can reduce the message traffic between nodes and the number of tree re-traversals. Using a simulation model of the SD cluster, we show that the proposed scheme exhibits substantial performance improvement over the previous schemes.

The fact that loosely bonded DNA bases could tolerate large structural fluctuations, form a dissipative environment for a charge traveling through the DNA. Nonlinear stochastic nature of structural fluctuations facilitates rich charge dynamics in DNA. We study the complex charge dynamics by solving a nonlinear, stochastic, coupled system of differential equations. Charge transfer between donor and acceptor in DNA occurs via different mechanisms depending on the distance between donor and acceptor. It changes from tunneling regime to a polaron assisted hopping regime depending on the donor-acceptor separation. Also we found that charge transport strongly depends on the feasibility of polaron formation. Hence it has complex dependence on temperature and charge-vibrations coupling strength. Mismatched base pairs, such as different conformations of the G·A mispair, cause only minor structural changes in the host DNA molecule, thereby making mispair recognition an arduous task. Electron transport in DNA that depends strongly on the hopping transfer integrals between the nearest base pairs, which in turn are affected by the presence of a mispair, might be an attractive approach in this regard. I report here on our investigations, via the I-V characteristics, of the effect of a mispair on the electrical properties of homogeneous and generic DNA molecules. The I-V characteristics of DNA were studied numerically within the double-stranded tight-binding model. The parameters of the tight-binding model, such as the transfer integrals and on-site energies, are determined from first-principles calculations. The changes in electrical current through the DNA chain due to the presence of a mispair depend on the conformation of the G·A mispair and are appreciable for DNA consisting of up to 90 base pairs. For homogeneous DNA sequences the current through DNA is suppressed and the strongest suppression is realized for the G(anti)·A(syn) conformation of the G·A mispair. For inhomogene
