This points to the need for every programmer to understand how parallelism and distributed programming affect problem solving, teaching only traditional sequential programming is no longer sufficient. To address the rapidly widening gap between emerging highly-parallel computer architectures and the sequential programming approach taught in traditional CS/CE courses, the Computer Science Department at Tennessee Technological University has integrated PDC into their introductory programming course sequence. The main objective of this work consists in analyzing sub-structuring method for the parallel solution of sparse linear systems with matrices arising from the discretization of partial differential equations such as finite element, finite volume and finite difference. With the success encountered by the general-purpose processing on graphics processing units (GPGPU), we develop an hybrid multiGPUs and CPUs sub-structuring algorithm. GPU computing, with CUDA, is used to accelerate the operations performed on each processor. Numerical experiments have been performed on a set of matrices arising from engineering problems. We compare C+MPI implementation on classical CPU cluster with C+MPI+CUDA on a cluster of GPU. The performance comparison shows a speed-up for the sub-structuring method up to 19 times in double precision by using CUDA.

Heterogeneous architectures have emerged as a dominant platform, not only in high-performance computing but also in mobile processing, cloud computing and the Internet of Things (IoTs). Because the undergraduate computer science curriculum is over-crowded in its current state, it is difficult to include a new course as a required part of the curriculum without increasing the number of hours to graduation. Integration of heterogeneous computing content requires a module-based approach, such as those undertaken for introducing parallel and distributed computing. In this paper, we present a teaching module that introduces CS1 students to some of the fundamental concepts in heterogeneous computing. The goal of this module is not to teach students how to program heterogeneous systems but rather expose them to this emerging trend and prepare them for material they are expected to see in future classes. Although concepts are covered at a high-level, the module emphasizes active learning and includes a lab assignment that provides students with hands-on experience with respect to task mapping and performance evaluation of a heterogeneous system. The module was implemented at our home institution in Fall 2018. Initial evaluation results are quite encouraging both in terms of learning outcomes and student engagement and interest.

This paper proposes a method for reducing the number of search nodes involved in the solution of queries arriving to a Web search engine. The method is applied by the query receptionist machine during situations of sudden peaks in query traffic to reduce the load on the search nodes. The experimental evaluation based on actual traces from users of a major search engine, shows that the proposed method outperforms alternative strategies. This is more evident for systems composed of a large number of search nodes which indicates that the method is also more scalable than the alternative strategies. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

This paper proposes parallel canonical differential evolutionary particle swarm optimization (C-DEEPSO) for voltage and reactive power control (Volt Var Control: VVC). The problem can be formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem (MINLP) and various evolutionary computation techniques have been applied to the problem including PSO, differential evolution (DE), and DEEPSO. Since VVC is one of the on-line controls, speed-up of computation is required. Moreover, there is still room for improvement on solution quality. This paper proposes parallel C-DEEPSO in order to speed up the calculation and improve solution quality and applies it to a VVC problem. The proposed method is applied to IEEE 118 bus system. The results indicate that the proposed method can realize fast computation and minimize active power losses more than conventional evolutionary computation techniques. parallel and distributed computing (PDC) is included in the Computer Science Curriculum 2013 from ACM and IEEE Computer Science and hence required for ABET Computer Science programs, 2019 to 2020. It is a challenge to incorporate PDC into an existing full Computer Science program. In this paper, we examine the feasibility and challenges of introducing PDC thinking at the lower level or upper level and evaluate the effectiveness of various PDC learning and teaching methodologies. Further, we propose possible teaching strategies and techniques for introducing PDC topics for both lower and upper-level undergraduate students.
