Social contact network (SCN) models the contacts between people by their daily activities. It can be formalized by an agent-to-location bipartite graph. The simulations over SCN are employed to study the complex social dynamics such as information propagation and disease spread among large-scale population. A challenge to the simulation is the skewed degree distribution of SCN, which contains a few hub locations with large numbers of visitors. The skewed degree distribution can cause load imbalance for parallel simulation and greatly degrade the execution performance. This paper proposes an approach which decomposes hub locations into small splits. Thus, SCN can be partitioned with better balanced workloads and multiple splits are able to run in parallel. Based on the pattern of information transmission between agents, we duplicate necessary data among splits to ensure the correctness of simulation. Furthermore, we enhance the parallel algorithm of SCN simulation to reduce the additional overhead from communication between splits. Finally, we build an experiment with epidemic simulation on an open dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that our approach achieves 14 similar to 35% performance improvement compared with the partitioning method without decomposition of hub locations.

Stochastic simulations may require many replications until their results are statistically significant. Each replication corresponds to a standalone simulation job, so that these can be computed in parallel. This paper presents a grid-inspired approach to distribute such independent jobs over a set of computing resources that host simulation services, all of which are managed by a central master service. Our method is fully integrated with alternative ways of distributed simulation in JAMEs II, hides all execution details from the user, and supports the coarse-grained parallel execution of any sequential simulator available in JAMEs II. A through performance analysis of the new execution mode illustrates its efficiency.

This paper deals with the problem of properly simulating the Internet of Things (IoT). Simulating an IoT allows evaluating strategies that can be employed to deploy smart services over different kinds of territories. However, the heterogeneity of scenarios seriously complicates this task. This imposes the use of sophisticated modeling and simulation techniques. We discuss novel approaches for the provision of scalable simulation scenarios, that enable the real-time execution of massively populated IoT environments. Attention is given to novel hybrid and multi-level simulation techniques that, when combined with agent-based, adaptive parallel and distributed simulation (PADS) approaches, can provide means to perform highly detailed simulations on demand. To support this claim, we detail a use case concerned with the simulation of vehicular transportation systems.

The problem of evacuating crowded closed spaces, such as discotheques, public exhibition pavilions or concert houses, has become increasingly important and gained attention both from practitioners and from public authorities. This kind of problem can be modeled using Agent Based Model techniques and consequently simulated in order to study evacuation strategies. In this paper, we show the Fira of Barcelona evacuation model implemented with Care HPS. As a main contribution: i) we extend and added new partitioning approaches and other features in Care HPS to carry on this model;and ii) we figured out that crowd evacuation problem has bottlenecks in reality, such as exits, that required more deep optimization in code in order to decrease the total execution time. Finally, we draw some conclusions and point out ways in which this work can be further extended. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

We have already proposed DTSS (event aware Dynamic Time Step Synchronization method) for speeding up moving objects (MOs) simulation, e.g. aircraft, ships, vehicles and so on, in a computer cluster environment. However, speeding up the simulation for a number of MOs on a single processor is required as well, Men the problem size is enlarged. In this paper, we propose DTSS-RT (DTSS for Road Traffic simulation), which can speed up the simulation by reducing the simulation cost of each MO and synchronization cost between MOs without degrading the simulation accuracy. For evaluating DTSS-RT, we employed a road traffic sub-simulator of RoboCup Rescue simulation. The results show that the performance of the simulation based on DTSS-RT is improved approximately 2 3 times over that of the conventional method except when the situation includes a heavy traffic jam.

Network simulations play an important role in the evolution of V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication services. Large-scale simulations involving a huge number of connected vehicles and/or heavy network traffic, however, typically take a long period of time to complete. In this poster, we explore a mechanism to accelerate network simulations (in terms of simulation time processed per unit wall-clock time) by the means of parallel and distributed simulations (PADS). Multiple instances of network simulators are run in parallel and loosely synchronized to process simulation events in a distributed manner. We develop a proof-of-concept implementation of the framework to showcase its feasibility. The results indicate that the proposed framework achieves up to 10 times faster simulation speed with eight parallel network simulation instances.

In scientific simulations the results generated usually come from a stochastic process. New solutions with the aim of improving these simulations have been proposed, but the problem is how to compare these solutions since the results are not deterministic. Consequently how to guarantee that the output results are statistically trusted. In this work we apply a statistical approach in order to define the transient and steady state in discrete event distributed simulation. We used linear regression and batch method to find the optimal simulation size. As contributions of our work we can enumerate: we have applied and adapted the simple statistical approach in order to define the optimal simulation length;we propose the approximate approach to normal distribution instead of generate replications sufficiently large;and the method can be used in other kind of non-terminating science simulations where the data either have a normal distribution or can be approximated by a normal distribution.

The set of events available for execution in a parallel Discrete Event simulation (PDES) are known as the pending event set. In a Time Warp synchronized simulation engine, these pending events are scheduled for execution in an aggressive manner that does not strictly enforce the causal relations between events. One of the key principles of Time Warp is that this relaxed causality will result in the processing of events in a manner that implicitly satisfies their causal order without paying the overhead costs of a strict enforcement of their causal order. On a shared memory platform the event scheduler generally attempts to schedule all available events in their Least TimeStamp First (LTSF) order to facilitate event processing in their causal order. By following an LTSF scheduling policy, a Time Warp scheduler can generally process events so that: (i) the critical path of the event timestamps is scheduled as early as possible, and (ii) causal violations occur infrequently. While this works effectively to minimize rollback (triggered by causal violations), as the number of parallel threads increases, the contention to the shared data structures holding the pending events can have significant negative impacts on overall event processing throughput. This work examines the application of profile data taken from Discrete-Event simulation (DES) models to drive the simulation kernel optimization process. In particular, we take profile data about events in the schedule pool from three DES models to derive alternate scheduling possibilities in a Time Warp simulation kernel. Profile data from the studied DES models suggests that in many cases each Logical Process (LP) in a simulation will have multiple events that can be dequeued and executed as a set. In this work, we review the profile data and implement group event scheduling strategies based on this profile data. Traffic simulation can be very computationally intensive, especially for microscopic simulations of large urban areas (tens of thousands of road segments, hundreds of thousands of agents) and when real-time or better than real-time simulation is required. For instance, running a couple of what-if scenarios for road management authorities/police during a road incident: time is a hard constraint and the size of the simulation is relatively high. Hence the need for distributed simulations and for optimal space partitioning algorithms, ensuring an even distribution of the load and minimal communication between computing nodes. In this paper we describe a distributed version of SUMO, a simulator of urban mobility, and SParTSim, a space partitioning algorithm guided by road network for distributed simulations. It outperforms classical uniform space partitioning in terms of road segment cuts and load-balancing.

Several simulations for parallel collision detection have been suggested during the last years. The algorithms usually greatly depend on the parallel infrastructure and this dependency causes in many times non-scalability performance. The dependency also harms the portability of the simulation. This paper suggests a scalable and portable parallel algorithm for collision detection simulation that fits both clusters and MPI machines.
