LMI static output feedback design of fuzzy power system stabilisers

The design of a model-free fuzzy power system stabiliser (PSS) lacks systematic stability analysis and performance guarantees. This paper provides a step towards the design of a model-based fuzzy PSS that guarantees not only stability, but also performance specifications of power systems. A new practical and simple design based on static output feedback is proposed. The design guarantees robust pole clustering in an acceptable region in the complex plane for a wide range of operating conditions. A power system design model is approximated by a set of Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models to account for non-linearities, uncertainties and large-scale power systems. The proposed PSS design is based on parallel distributed compensation (PDC). Sufficient design conditions are derived as linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The design procedure leads to a tractable convex optimisation problem in terms of the stabiliser gain matrix. Simulations results of both single machine and multimachine power systems confirm the effectiveness of the proposed PSS design.

LMI-based 2-DoF control design of a manipulator via T-S descriptor approach

This paper presents a method for the control design of a manipulator. The design goal is to achieve a guaranteed H∞ model reference tracking performance with respect to bounded reference inputs through a 2-DoF control scheme. To achieve this goal, the manipulator system is represented by a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model in descriptor form. The control scheme is based on a parallel distributed compensation controller. Furthermore, the stability of the nonlinear system is also guaranteed. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, the control design is formulated as an LMI optimization problem which can be effectively solved with numerical solvers. Simulation results carried out with the SimMechanics environment clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2018

Wastewater treatment systems have recently taken on new trends resulting from the growing awareness of health and environmental risks. New strategies aimed at the recovery of treated water are increasingly being proposed. Given its better performance, biological treatment via an activated sludge process (ASP) represents the key phase in the overall treatment chain. In this work, a Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy-based modeling and control approach of an ASP is proposed and successfully carried out for the carbon removal. Using the formalism of linear parameter-varying state-space representation and convex polytopic transformation, a TS fuzzy model of the studied ASP is firstly established. Such a fuzzy model is then used to design advanced control laws that maintain the considered state variables, i.e., volume of the effluent and concentrations of the heterotrophic biomass, biodegradable substrate and dissolved oxygen, at the set-point values. Two stabilization control approaches, namely parallel distributed compensation and static output parallel distributed compensation, are proposed and successfully applied. All these control problems are reformulated as Lyapunov quadratic stability conditions and linear matrix inequality constraints. Demonstrative results are carried out and compared to show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed TS fuzzy-based control approach of such complex and nonlinear biochemical processes.

Quadratic Design of Robust Controllers for Uncertain T-S Models with D-Stability Contraints

This paper deals with the robust D-stabilization of uncertain Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems. New Linear Matrix Linearity (LMI) conditions are proposed for the design of non parallel-distributed-compensation (non-PDC) controllers with D-stability constraints, i.e forcing the poles of each linear polytopes of the closed-loop T-S plant with model uncertainties to belong in a prescribed LMI region. The LMI conditions are obtained through the use of a quadratic Lyapunov function candidate and relaxed by the introduction of free weighting matrices. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, the D-stabilization of an academic example of a fourth-order uncertain T-S model is provided in simulation. © 2016

Tracking controller design of a sideslip angle and yaw rate for electrical vehicle bicycle model

To improve road safety, this paper proposes a fuzzy control strategy of the rear steering angle and yaw moment of an Electric Vehicle (EV). A H∞control structure based on the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) multi-models is proposed to track the desired trajectories and to attenuate external disturbances. First, a bicycle model is introduced with a reference model that are used to construct the augmented system. Next, fuzzy TS multi-models are used to represent the Linear Parameters Varying (LPV) system. Then, based on these models a parallel distributed compensation (PDC) control law is designed. Finally, the stability analysis is treated as a convex optimization problem formulated in Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) formalism. Finally, the simulation results of the proposed control strategy illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach. © 2016

Design of Modified Repetitive Controller for T-S Fuzzy Systems

A repetitive controller contains a pure-delay positive-feedback loop that makes it difficult to stabilize a strictly proper system. A low-pass filter is inserted in a repetitive controller to relax the stability condition of the modified repetitive-control system at the cost of degrading the tracking performance. In this study, a modified repetitive-control approach is developed, which reaches a balance between the stability and tracking performance for a class of affine nonlinear systems based on the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. First, a 2D model is established to adjust continuous control and discrete learning actions preferentially induced by exploiting the 2D property in a repetitive-control process. Then, the Lyapunov stability theory and 2D system theory are used to derive a sufficient stability condition in the form of linear matrix inequalities to design parallel-distributed-compensation-based state-feedback controllers. Finally, an application-oriented example is used, and a comparison is performed to show that an extra variable is introduced such that the developed method has a better tracking performance.

Global asymptotic stabilization of the prototypical aeroelastic wing section via TP model transformation

A comprehensive analysis of aeroelastic systems has shown that these systems exhibit a broad class of pathological response regimes when certain types of non-linearities are included. In this paper, we propose a design method of a state-dependent non-linear controller for aeroelastic systems that includes polynomial structural non-linearities. The proposed method is based on recent numerical techniques such as the Tensor Product (TP) model transformation and the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) control design methods within the parallel. distributed compensation (PDC) frameworks. In order to link the TP model transformation and the LMI's in the proposed design method, we extend the TP model transformation with a further transformation. As an example, a controller is derived that ensures the global asymptotic stability of the prototypical aeroelastic wing section via one control surface, in contrast with previous approaches which have achieved local stability or applied additional control actuator on the purpose of achieving global stability. Numerical simulations are used to provide empirical validation of the control results. The effectiveness of the controller design is compared with a former approach.

We propose a numerical method to compute stabilizing state feedback control laws and associated polyhedral invariant sets for nonlinear systems represented by Fuzzy TakagiSugeno (T-S) models, subject to state and control constraints, and persistent disturbances. Sufficient conditions are derived under which a given polyhedral set is positively invariant under a parallel distributed compensation (PDC), in the form of bilinear algebraic inequalities. Then, a bilinear programming (BP) problem is proposed to compute the state feedback gains and an associated positively invariant polyhedron, with predefined complexity, which solve a constrained regulation problem for the Fuzzy T-S system. The paper deals with the problem of constrained H-infinity fuzzy control for a class of continuous-time nonlinear systems, represented by Takagi-Sugeno models. On the basis of the Lyapunov stability criterion and H-infinity norm performances, the sufficient conditions of stabilization are outlined and adjusted for systems operating in a forced mode. Numerical simulation is given to illustrate the design procedure and to validate the performances of the proposed approach.

In single-phase shunt active power filter (SAPF), there are several methods to obtain the best reference control current. The theory of instantaneous reactive power has been successfully used in three-phase symmetrical and asymmetrical power systems, but it is too complicated to apply into single-phase power systems because of complex coordination converting by single-phase to three-phase and then being reverted. One-cycle control or equivalent method can deal with single-phase SAPF control in a good way, but the PI controller also seems too difficult to adjust, and it may cause system unstable while in wide range used. In this paper, the application of Takagi-Sugeno (TS) type fuzzy logic controllers for single-phase SAPF line current control is proposed. This type of fuzzy controller provides a wide range of control gain variation by including both linear and nonlinear terms in the consequent part of the fuzzy rule base. The T-S fuzzy controllers are quite general in that they use arbitrary input fuzzy sets, any type of fuzzy logic, and the general defuzzifier. To design fuzzy controllers, bilinear model of the active power filter system are represented by T-S fuzzy modeling and the so-called parallel distributed compensation (PDC) is employed to design fuzzy controllers from the T-S fuzzy models. For the designed fuzzy control system, the problem of finding stable feedback gains and a common Lyapunov function is solved by linear matrix inequality (LMI) via MATLAB. Computer simulation tests on a single-phase power system indicate the significant performance of this new TS fuzzy controller for a single-phase SAPF.
