parallel lattice structure for Dual Windows Computation in Multiwindow Gabor Transform

The multiwindow discrete Gabor transform (M-DGT) is a useful time-frequency analysis tool for non-stationary signal processing. Given an arbitrary Gabor frame, a parallel lattice structure of block time-recursive algorithm for fast and efficient computation of dual/analysis Gabor windows for M-DGT is presented. By using a multiple window dual Gabor frame, the dual Gabor windows can be expressed by synthesis and analysis windows with a block-circulant matrix. Then, a parallel lattice structure of block time-recursive can be derived to solve the dual Gabor windows by the block-circulant matrix computed by the fast discrete Fourier transform (FFT). When compared to three existing methods, the proposed algorithm can reduce computational complexity and save computational time. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm is valid to compute the dual windows of the M-DGT, which make the algorithm attractive for fast time-frequency signal analysis and processing.

The existing researches of fast parallel algorithms for DCT-based real-valued discrete Gabor transform and expansion are limited to theoretical analysis. In this paper, parallel computing based implementations of parallel lattice structure algorithm are presented. The communication issues are not considered in original algorithms which enable the efficiency lower than serial fast algorithm in implementation. In view of this, improved implementation methods are proposed both for transform and expansion. The recursive part of the original algorithms is expanded into an iterative form. This makes the interprocess communication converted into serial calculation. Thus, each parallel channel (i.e., process in parallel computing) in the improved method is independent, thereby reducing the interprocess communication greatly. Finally, algorithms are tested on a parallel computer. The experimental results are compared and analyzed, which indicate that the proposed implementation methods are attractive for real-time signal processing as compared to the existing parallel lattice structure algorithm and the fastest serial algorithm.

parallel-computing-based implementation of the two recent fast parallel algorithms for the discrete Gabor transform (DGT) is presented in this paper. First of all, the first existing block time-recursive DGT algorithm with parallel lattice structure is analysed, and then an improved implementation method under a parallel computing environment is presented. Each parallel channel (i.e. process in parallel computing) in the improved method is independent, thereby reducing the interprocess communication by 99.2% on average over the original algorithm. Second, the second existing fast parallel DGT algorithm based on multirate filtering is analysed. Through the use of parallel computing, the communication overhead of the multirate filtering-based parallel DGT algorithm is optimised and its time efficiency is raised from 31.26 times to 54.52 times faster than the serial fast DGT algorithm in processing of long sequences. Finally, the experimental results are compared and analysed, which indicate that the proposed fast DGT implementation methods are attractive for real-time signal processing.

Computational complexity analysis and comparison show that the proposed algorithms provide a more efficient and faster approach as compared to the existing DGT algorithms for the computation of DGTs. Two-dimensional fast Gabor transform algorithms are useful for real-time applications due to the high computational complexity of the traditional 2-D complex-valued discrete Gabor transform (CDGT). This paper presents two block time-recursive algorithms for 2-D DHT-based real-valued discrete Gabor transform (RDGT) and its inverse transform and develops a fast parallel approach for the implementation of the two algorithms. The computational complexity of the proposed parallel approach is analyzed and compared with that of the existing 2-D CDGT algorithms. The results indicate that the proposed parallel approach is attractive for real time image processing.

The Gabor transform has been recognized as being very useful in diverse areas such as speech and image processing, radar, sonar and seismic data processing and interpretation;however, its real time applications were limited due to its high computational complexity. To reduce the computational complexity, the real-valued discrete Gabor transform (RDGT) was presented in our previous work. In this paper, firstly, the 2-D RDGT and its simple relationship with the 2-D complex-valued discrete Gabor transform (CDGT) will be briefly reviewed;secondly, time-recursive algorithms for the efficient and fast computation of the 2-D RDGT coefficients of an image and for the fast reconstruction of the original image from the coefficients will be developed;thirdly, two-layer parallel lattice structures for the implementation of the algorithms will be studied;and finally, the computational complexity of the proposed algorithms will be analyzed and compared with that of the existing 2-D CDGT algorithms, which points out that the parallel implementation of the proposed algorithms are very attractive for real time image processing.
