parallel Split-Join Networks for Shared Account Cross-Domain Sequential Recommendations

Sequential recommendation is a task in which one models and uses sequential information about user behavior for recommendation purposes. We study sequential recommendation in a context in which multiple individual users share a single account (i.e., they have a shared account) and in which user behavior is available in multiple domains (i.e., recommendations are cross-domain). These two characteristics bring new challenges on top of those of the traditional sequential recommendation task. First, we need to identify the behavior associated with different users and different user roles under the same account in order to recommend the right item to the right user role at the right time. Second, we need to identify behavior in one domain that might be helpful to improve recommendations in other domains. We study shared account cross-domain sequential recommendation and propose a parallel split-join Network (parallel Split-Join Network (PSJNet)), a parallel modeling network to address the two challenges above. We use "split " to address the challenge raised by shared accounts;PSJNet learns role-specific representations and uses a gating mechanism to filter out, from mixed user behavior, information of user roles that might be useful for another domain. In addition, "join " is used to address the challenge raised by the cross-domain setting;PSJNet learns cross-domain representations by combining the information from "split " and then transforms it to another domain. We present two variants of PSJNet: PSJNet-I and PSJNet-II. PSJNet-I is a "split-by-join " framework that splits the mixed representations to get role-specific representations and joins them to obtain cross-domain representations at each timestamp simultaneously. PSJNet-II is a "split-and-join " framework that first splits role-specific representations at each timestamp, and then the representations from all timestamps and all roles are joined to obtain cross-domain representations. The article is devoted to the development and justification of parallel numerical simulation methods. Results can be obtained to calculate the number of points. To increase the order of approximation of the developed methods, the set of points of the reference block (s) is introduced into difference schemes. Generation of difference schemes for any reference and calculated points is considered. For some block sizes, generated differential calculation schemes are obtained, oriented to the number of available processes in a parallel implementation. The absolute stability of the constructed multi-step multipoint methods according to the initial conditions and the right side is proved.

The 2.5D large-signal code TESLA-FW was recently developed with the goal to model TWT amplifiers based on the serpentine or folded-waveguide slow-wave structures. Predictions of the large-signal code, applied to the modeling of the single stage amplifiers, were found in a good agreement with the results of the 3D PIC code MAGIC, while its run-time was on orders of magnitude less. To extend applicability of the large-signal code, now we report its conversion into a parallel version, which allows us concurrently model all the stages of a multiple-beam cascaded TWT amplifiers based on serpentine or folded-waveguide slow-wave structures. Newly introduced parallel version of TESLA-FW is applied to model a 3-stage cascaded TWT amplifier to support on-going efforts on its design and further optimization. Obtained results are compared with the predictions of the 3D PIC code MAGIC.

SMSG: Profiling-Free parallelism modeling for Distributed Training of DNN

The increasing size of deep neural networks (DNNs) raises a high demand for distributed training. An expert could find good hybrid parallelism strategies, but designing suitable strategies is time and labor-consuming. Therefore, automating parallelism strategy generation is crucial and desirable for DNN designers. Some automatic searching approaches have recently been studied to free the experts from the heavy parallel strategy conception. However, these approaches all rely on a numerical cost model, which requires heavy profiling results that lack portability. These profiling-based approaches cannot lighten the strategy generation work due to the non-reusable profiling value. Our intuition is that there is no need to estimate the actual execution time of the distributed training but to compare the relative cost of different strategies. We propose SMSG (Symbolic modeling for Strategy Generation), which analyses the cost based on the communication and computation semantics. With SMSG, the parallel cost analyses are decoupled from hardware characteristics. SMSG defines cost functions for each kind of operator to quantitatively evaluate the amount of data for computation and communication, which eliminates the heavy profiling tasks. Besides, SMSG introduces how to apply functional transformation by using the Third Homomorphism theorem to control the high searching complexity. Our experiments show that SMSG can find good hybrid parallelism strategies to generate an efficient training performance similar to the state of the art. Moreover, SMSG covers a wide variety of DNN models with good scalability. SMSG provides good portability when changing training configurations that a profiling-based approach cannot.

Conservation of free-ranging cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) populations is multi faceted and needs to be addressed from an ecological, biological and management perspective. There is a wealth of published research, each focusing on a particular aspect of cheetah conservation. Identifying the most important factors, making sense of various (and sometimes contrasting) findings, and taking decisions when little or no empirical data is available, are everyday challenges facing conservationists. Bayesian networks (BN) provide a statistical modeling framework that enables analysis and integration of information addressing different aspects of conservation. There has been an increased interest in the use of BNs to model conservation issues, however the development of more sophisticated BNs, utilizing object-oriented (OO) features, is still at the frontier of ecological research. We describe an integrated, parallel modeling process followed during a BN modeling workshop held in Namibia to combine expert knowledge and data about free-ranging cheetahs. The aim of the workshopwas to obtain a more comprehensive view of the current viability of the free-ranging cheetah population in Namibia, and to predict the effect different scenarios may have on the future viability of this free-ranging cheetah population. Furthermore, a complementary aim was to identify influential parameters of themodel to more effectively target those parameters having the greatest impact on population viability. The BN was developed by aggregating diverse perspectives from local and independent scientists, agents from the national ministry, conservation agency members and local fieldworkers. This integrated BN approach facilitates OO modeling in a multi-expert context which lends itself to a series of integrated, yet independent, subnetworks describing different scientific and management components. Both the size and the resolution of images always were key topics in the graphical computing area. Especially, they become more and more relevant in the big data era. We can observe that often a huge amount of data is exchanged by medium/low bandwidth networks or yet, they need to be stored on devices with limited space of memory. In this context, the present paper shows the use of the Fractal method for image compression. It is a lossy method known by providing higher indexes of file reduction through a highly time consuming phase. In this way, we developed a model of parallel application for exploiting the power of multiprocessor architectures in order to get the Fractal method advantages in a feasible time. The evaluation was done with different-sized images as well as by using two types of machines, one with two and another with four cores. The results demonstrated that both the speedup and efficiency are highly dependent of the number of cores. They emphasized that a large number of threads does not always represent a better performance.

The use of modeling as a support tool for crisis management and decision planning requires fast simulations in complex built-up areas. The parallel Micro SWIFT SPRAY (PMSS) modeling system offers a tradeoff between accuracy and fast calculations, while retaining the capability to model buildings at high resolution in three dimensions. PMSS has been applied to actual areas of responsibilities of emergency teams during the EMERGENCIES (very high rEsolution eMERGEncy simulatioN for citIES) and EMED (Emergencies for the MEDiterranean sea) projects: these areas cover several thousands of square kilometers. Usage of metric meshes on such large areas requires domain decomposition parallel algorithms within PMSS. Sensitivity and performance of the domain decomposition has been evaluated both for the flow and dispersion models, using from 341 up to 8052 computing cores. Efficiency of the parallel SWIFT (PSWIFT) flow model on the EMED domain remains above 50% for up to 4700 cores. Influence of domain decomposition on the parallel SPRAY (PSPRAY) Lagrangian dispersion model is less straightforward to evaluate due to the complex load balancing process. Due to load balancing, better performance is achieved with the finest domain decomposition. PMSS is able to simulate accidental or malevolent airborne release at high resolution on very large areas, consistent with emergency team responsibility constrains, and with computation time compatible with operational use. This demonstrates that PMSS is an important asset for emergency response applications.

In order to solve the problem of topic modeling for large-scale social short texts, this paper studied the parallel LDA modeling method and the dynamic topic model that can capture the dynamic characteristics of the topic. After that, a dynamic topic modeling method for large-scale text sets is proposed, which is based on the data decomposition and post-clustering method. It divided the whole corpus into independent fragments according to different features(e.g., time feature) and modeled the corpus in parallel. Then, it clustered the local topic in later stage. Experiments show that compared with DTM its execution time is less and it can capture the dynamic characteristics of the topic more effectively.

This work describes the optimization and parallelization of the OASIS3 coupler. Performance evaluation and profiling have been carried out by means of the CMCC-MED coupled model, developed at the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC) and currently running on a NEC SX9 cluster. Our experiments highlighted that extrapolation (accomplished by the extrap function) and interpolation (implemented from the scriprmp function) transformations take the most time. Optimization concerned I/O operations reducing coupling time by 27%. parallelization of OASIS3 represents a further step towards overall improvement of the whole coupled model. Our proposed parallel approach distributes fields over a pool of available processes. Each process applies coupling transformations to its assigned fields. This approach restricts parallelization level to the number of coupling fields. However, it can be fully combined with a parallelization approach considering the geographical domain distribution. Finally a quantitative comparison of the parallel coupler with the OASIS3 pseudo-parallel version is proposed.
