Highly efficient and extensible parallel topology optimization for continuous fiber reinforced composites

The optimal design of continuous fiber reinforced composites (CFRC) is crucial for enhancing the lightweight and mechanical performance of high-end equipment structures. This research introduces an innovative parallel optimization framework, referred to as level-set and stream function based parallel topology optimization (LSPTO), for optimizing CFRC structures. In LSPTO, the level-set function and stream function are well integrated to calculate the structural topology and continuous fiber paths, respectively. Compactly supported radial basis functions are utilized to parameterize the structural description functions, enabling the development of design variables. Building on LSPTO, this article presents a general form of sensitivity information. This aids in addressing optimization of the design of CFRC across various objectives. Stiffness optimization cases demonstrate the effectiveness of LSPTO and its advantages in computational efficiency. This parallel numerical framework can efficiently produce clear structural topologies and high-quality fiber paths (e.g., continuous, smooth, non-crossing, and of equal width). Further, the extensibility of the LSPTO framework is investigated considering manufacturing constraints (i.e., fiber paths spacing and fiber volume fraction) for practical applications, i.e., additive manufacturing. By incorporating two constraints related to the gradient of the stream function into the LSPTO framework, the controllable fiber path spacing, regulation of fiber volume fraction, and variable fiber density of CFRC can be well achieved. Compared with the recently developed uniform fiber density method, LSPTO can attain a more effective distribution of fiber paths and significantly enhance structural performance while adhering to manufacturing constraints. The proposed method is highly efficient and easily extensible in the design of CFRC and lays a foundation in the integrated design and manufacturing of CFRC.

A novel batch-selection strategy for parallel global optimization

Bayesian-based parallel global optimization methods have become increasingly popular for solving black-box functions using parallel resources. When the function exhibits multimodality, it is difficult to identify the global optimum. This article proposes a novel batch selection strategy for parallel global optimization called Sampling-Optimizing-Selecting (SOS) to address this problem. SOS, utilizing minimum energy design, gradient optimization and hypersphere clustering, can adaptively explore multiple local optimal regions of the objective function simultaneously and make full use of parallel resources to obtain the global optimum efficiently. Additionally, the SOS algorithm maintains the sparsity between sample points to a certain extent, which enhances the accuracy of the surrogate model and thus improves the robustness of the optimization effect. Several numerical simulations and optimization experiments involving array decoy jamming are presented to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed strategy.

Nowadays, lightweight is an indispensable requirement in the development of automobile industry as one of the most effective methods of energy conservation and emission reduction. In this paper, the lightweight design of oil pan was carried out by using carbon fiber reinforced plastic material instead of metal material. In particular, the influence of manufacturing process was considered in the structural design, and an integrated design method of structure and process was proposed. According to the idea of comprehensive design, structural design, and composite design were carried out in parallel. Reasonably adjusted the geometric characteristics of the oil pan, further determined the feasible laying process scheme and filling process scheme, and finally the oil pan that meets the working conditions and lightweight objectives was manufactured. The work done in this paper can provide a certain reference for the lightweight design of other automobile parts.

The three-dimensional wedge-shaped underwater acoustic propagation model exists analytical solution, which provides verification for models like FOR3D propagation model under certain situation. However, the solving process of a three-dimensional complex underwater sound field problem is hindered by intensive computing and long calculation times. In this paper, we exploit a hybrid parallel programing model, such as MPI and OpenMP, to accelerate the computation, design various optimization methods to improve the overall performance, and then carry out the performance and optimization analysis on the Tianhe-2 platform. Experiments show that the optimized implementation of the three-dimensional wedge-shaped underwater acoustic propagation model achieves a 46.5 speedup compared to the original serial program, thereby illustrating a substantial performance improvement. We also carried out scalability tests and parallel optimization experiments for large-scale practical examples.

Correctly rounded elementary mathematical functions are crucial for numerical computations and scientific applications. Generating these functions accurately is a challenging task. The latest methods automate this process by transforming the problem of generating correctly rounded elementary mathematical functions into a linear programming problem. However, this generation process is serial, and the inefficiency of serialization hinders the creation of new elementary mathematical functions and limits the broader application of the technique. This paper introduces a novel parallel method to accelerate the generation of correctly rounded elementary mathematical functions. The primary approach is to optimize the generation process through two dimensions: task decomposition and data parallelism, effectively mitigating data dependency and competition. This adaptation renders it suitable for conventional parallel models. We implemented our approach to generate six elementary functions. Our experimental results demonstrate that our parallel method can automate the generation of correctly rounded elementary math functions, achieving a speedup of 9.2x over the state-of-the-art approach, RLIBM.

Due to increasing power consumption, heat dissipation, and other physical issues, the architecture of central processing unit (CPU) has been turning to multicore rapidly in recent years. Multicore processor is packaged with multiple processor cores in the same chip, which not only offers increased performance, but also presents significant challenges to application developers. As a matter of fact, in GIS field most of current GIS algorithms were implemented serially and could not best exploit the parallelism potential on such multicore platforms. In this paper, we choose Inverse Distance Weighted spatial interpolation algorithm (IDW) as an example to study how to optimize current serial GIS algorithms on multicore platform in order to maximize performance speedup. With the help of OpenMP, threading methodology is introduced to split and share the whole interpolation work among processor cores. After parallel optimization, execution time of interpolation algorithm is greatly reduced and good performance speedup is achieved. For example, performance speedup on Intel Xeon 5310 is 1.943 with 2 execution threads and 3.695 with 4 execution threads respectively. An additional output comparison between pre-optimization and post-optimization is carried out and shows that parallel optimization does to affect final interpolation result.

This paper proposes a parallel framework to speed up video coding on the Cell Broadband Engine (Cell BE) heterogeneous multicore platform. It integrates thread-level parallelism (TLP), data level parallelism (DLP) and an innovative data prefetching scheme to exploit the implicit parallelism of the most computationally intensive motion estimation procedure in video coding. The video frame is partitioned to several slices which are processed simultaneously on multicores to exploit TLP. The sum of absolute differences (SAD) calculation in the ME process is implemented by using SIMD instructions to exploit DLP. Slices are transferred using a data prefetching scheme to hide memory access delay, which enables the process of data access and the ME process to execute concurrently. Experimental results show that the proposed parallel implementation, compared with the serial implementation of video encoding, achieves significant performance improvement.

In this paper, we design a frame to automatically select CPU or GPU environment and establish four general parallel foundation libraries. First, the system general foundation library and mathematical foundation library are built on basis of the research on GPU parallel characteristics, eUDA programming technology and the serial algorithm of forward and preserved amplitude evaluation. Then, according to these two support libraries, we establish the forward general foundation library and preserved amplitude evaluation general foundation library, following several optimization strategies and criterions. Finally, accuracy and time experiments are taken to evaluate the two types of general parallel foundation libraries. It is showed the speedup has reached more than 10 times under the same accuracy.

Edge Extraction is a practical application that uses image sharpening technology to detect the edge of objects in an image, which has been widely used in Image Processing area. As the volume of an image increases large enough, meanwhile the cost time requires short enough, there comes a new research problem, i.e., massive image fast edge extraction. This paper focuses on the abovementioned problem, explores and proposes a set of optimization solutions with the idea of parallel computing. Firstly, two parallel computing models, Shared-Memory Model and Message Passing Model and their implementations are introduced, and the time estimation equations are built to analyze the parallel performance. Secondly, a sequential edge extraction algorithm based on Sobel Operator is parallelized based the two parallel computing models, and the factors that impact the parallel performance are analyzed. Thirdly, a set of comparison experiments are conducted in Chip Multi-Processor environment, and the conclusion is summarized to give future research inspiration.
