Since its invention, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) has been used to solve difficult problems, some of which can take large amounts of time and resources. In recent years, general purpose computing on a graphic processing unit (GPGPU) has arisen to enable scientists and engineers to take advantage of the sometimes enormous speed gains made by parallel programming. While placing a human in the loop has been investigated for more traditional PSO, this paper opens a discussion on human in the loop on PSO on a GPU.

This paper presents a programming model approach that explicitly addresses the programmability of scientific code by annotating imperative code with its algorithmic structural behavior. This information is used to create hierarchical structures, as opposed to the flat structure that most programming models work with, which allows sound code transformation at any level of the code, adjusting the granularity of parallelization simultaneously with other parameters to better exploit the available hardware resources.

Before implementation into hardware signal processing algorithms are tested in simulation mode. LabVIEW provides highly convenient environment for simulation development and also tools for generation of simulation environment that can include simulation itself and collection of simulation data. Despite the fact these tools use LabVIEW for code generation, it is not easy to understand the principles of code generation and effectively develop simulation generators. This paper presents toolbox for improved LabVIEW code generation. The developed toolbox is based on standard LabVIEW code generation functions maximally simplifying the application and minimizing the necessary amount of tools for code generation. This paper consists of theoretical part about LabVIEW code generation methods, practical part about principles of LabVIEW code generation using scripting and a graphical presentation of improved LabVIEW code generation advantages. The presented graphical results show that the improved LabVIEW code generation is simpler (thus better) and more understandable for practical realization and the code generator is clearer and more comprehensible than the original one.

This article aims to highlight the usefulness of improving classical algorithms by generating new approaches, efficiency or parallel execution time optimization at all costs. The reconsideration of classical algorithms, but in different testing conditions can help all products that rely on them. Based on the different uses of Dijkstra's algorithm and the new approaches based on the use, it can be said that today this algorithm covers several areas with high utility nowadays. Here there are examples such as GPS systems, which must find roads fast depending on different conditions. Also this algorithm is to be found in the network where we can talk about real priority schemes and data transfer speed that matters a lot today. Even in the top management systems these algorithms, minimum road, can be used with predilection. This article offers an innovative and efficient approach of Dijkstra's algorithm through parallel programming and analysis of the results obtained in different tests.

In model checking, abstractions can cause spurious results, which need to be verified in the concrete system to gain conclusive results. Verification based on a multi-valued logic can distinguish between conclusive and inconclusive results, provides increased precision, and allows for encoding additional information into the model, which gives rise to new applications. To ensure a correct abstraction, one can use a mixed simulation [1] to relate a multi-valued model to its abstraction. In this paper we extend the notion of mixed simulation to include inconsistent values, thereby resolving an asymmetry in the definition and allowing for abstractions with increased precision when inconsistent values are available.

As the technology trend moves toward manufacturing many-core systems with hundreds of processing cores, the problem of efficiently managing multiple parallel jobs on such massively parallel systems becomes increasingly important. With traditional time-sharing each process assumes it is the only running process. This assumption can easily lead to system oversubscription and thereby, losing overall performance due to frequent context switches. Space-sharing techniques allocate a certain number of hardware cores to each process and by that malleable processes can set their parallelism level to their allocated number of cores, hence avoiding oversubscription. However, finding the optimal spatial allocation is not a trivial task. In this paper we propose FRAME, a resource allocation technique to maximize a system's overall utility and fairness, running multiple malleable processes with CPU-bound workloads. First, we formalize the resource allocation problem as an NP-hard problem. Then, we use approximation techniques and convex optimization theory to find the optimal solution to the formulated problem, in pseudo-polynomial time. Our evaluation results show that our method is very fast and efficient in finding the optimal solution to the resource allocation problem. Also, the results suggests that the found solution increases the system's overall utility by 48%, in average, with regard to the best alternative allocation policy.

Representative applications are versatile tools to evaluate new programming approaches, techniques and optimisations as a way to ensure continued high performance on future computing architectures. They make experimentation much easier before adopting changes/insights into the large scientific codes. In this paper we demonstrate the important role played by representative/proxy applications in designing and developing two high-level programming approaches: namely the OP2 and OPS domain specific (active) libraries. OP2 and OPS utilizes code generation techniques to produce automatic parallelisations from a high-level abstract problem declaration. The strategy delivers significant developer productivity to the domain scientist, while at the same time allowing computational experts to adopt the latest programming models and hardware-specific optimisations into the library and code generation tools to achieve near optimal performance. We show how representative applications have been a cornerstone in the development of OP2 and OPS and chart our experiences. In particular, we demonstrate how the range of hand-tuned optimized parallelisations of the CloverLeaf hydrodynamics mini-app allowed us to gain clear evidence that the OPS based code generated parallelisations were indeed as optimal as the hand-tuned versions. Additionally, with the use of a representative application from the CFD domain we demonstrate how the optimisations discovered and applied to proxy apps are indeed directly transferable to a large-scale industrial application at Rolls Royce plc. These results provide significant evidence into the utility of representative applications to improve productivity, enable performance portability and ultimately future-proof scientific applications.

Weakly consistent multiprocessors such as ARM and IBM POWER have been with us for decades, but their subtle programmer-visible concurrency behaviour remains challenging, both to implement and to use;the traditional architecture documentation, with its mix of prose and pseudocode, leaves much unclear. In this paper we show how a precise architectural envelope model for such architectures can be defined, taking IBM POWER as our example. Our model specifies, for an arbitrary test program, the set of all its allowable executions, not just those of some particular implementation. The model integrates an operational concurrency model with an ISA model for the fixed-point non-vector user-mode instruction set (largely automatically derived from the vendor pseudocode, and expressed in a new ISA description language). The key question is the interface between these two: allowing all the required concurrency behaviour, without over committing to some particular microarchitectural implementation, requires a novel abstract structure. Our model is expressed in a mathematically rigorous language that can be automatically translated to an executable test-oracle tool;this lets one either interactively explore or exhaustively compute the set of all allowed behaviours of intricate test cases, to provide a reference for hardware and software development.

Current trends in computer architecture show that we are aiming toward more cores and even more so more heterogeneity. As an extensive knowledge of processor's internals cannot be a prerequisite to their programming and for the sake of portability, these systems necessitate the compilation flow to evolve and cope with heterogeneity issues. In this paper, we lay a first step toward a possible solution to this challenge by exploring the results of Single Program Multiple Data (SPMD) type of parallelism with heterogeneous compute kernels and predicting performance of the compilation results so that our tools can guide a compiler to build an optimal partition of task automatically, even on heterogeneous targets. We explore a synchronous execution model and use execution time from application parts to predict the performance of the whole application. We show on experimental results a very good accuracy of our tools to predict real world performance on 3 case studies with current days server processors used as proxy experimental setup for future embedded manycores.

We present the LeVen computational system for simulation of the electro-mechanical function of the left ventricle (LV) of mammalian heart on parallel computers. A macroscopic LV model incorporates state-of-the-art cellular models, e.g., Ekaterinburg-Oxford (EO) model [1] or ten Tusscher-Noble-Noble-Panfilov (TNNP) [2]. Ventricular mechanical activity on the organ level is described by means of the modified mass-spring system method, while the cellular mechanics is based on the myofilament activity. An open architecture of the LeVen system is proposed, which allows one to add and use new mechanical and electrophysiological models. The parallelization is implemented using the OpenMP technology. The performance of the LeVen system on multicore CPUs is evaluated. parallel LeVen implementation provides a significant speedup, but the scalability is limited.
