Multicore systems along with GPUs enabled to increase the parallelism extensively. Few compilers are enhanced to emerging issues with respect to threading and synchronization. Proper classification of algorithms and programs will benefit largely to the community of programmers to get chances for efficient parallelization. In this work we analyzed the existing species for algorithm classification, where we discuss the classification of related work and compare the amount of problems which are difficult for classification. We have selected set of algorithms which resemble in structure for various problems but perform given specific tasks. These algorithms are tested using existing tools such as Bones compiler and A-Darwin, an automatic species extraction tool. The access patterns are produced for various algorithmic kernels by running against A-Darwin and analysis is done for various code segments. We have identified that all the algorithms cannot be classified using only existing patterns and created new set of access patterns.

In software engineering, classification is a way to find an organized structure of knowledge about objects. Classification serves to investigate the relationship between the items to be classified, and can be used to identify the current gaps in the field. In many cases users are able to order and relate objects by fitting them in a category. This paper presents initial work on a taxonomy for classification of errors (bugs) related to concurrent execution of application level software threads. By classifying concurrency bugs based on their corresponding observable properties, this research aims to examine and structure the state of the art in this field, as well as to provide practitioner support for testing and debugging of concurrent software. We also show how the proposed classification, and the different classes of bugs, relates to the state of the art in the field by providing a mapping of the classification to a number of recently published papers in the software engineering field.

In the era of multicore systems, it is expected that the number of cores that can be integrated on a single chip will be 3-digit. The key to utilize such a huge computational power is to extract the very fine parallelism in the user program. This is non-trivial for the average programmer, and becomes very hard as the number of potential parallel instances increases. Task-based programming models such as OmpSs are promising, since they handle the detection of dependencies and synchronization for the programmer. However, state-of-the-art research shows that task management is not cheap, and introduces a significant overhead that limits the scalability of OmpSs. Nexus# is a hardware accelerator for the OmpSs runtime system, which dynamically monitors dependencies between tasks. It is fully synthesizable in VHDL, and has a distributed task graph model to achieve the best scalability. Supporting tasks with arbitrary number of parameters and any dependency pattern, Nexus# achieves better performance than Nanos, the official OmpSs runtime system, and scales well for the H264dec benchmark with very fine grained tasks, among other benchmarks from the Starbench suite.

In this paper we carried out designing and implementing of a target tracking data fusion algorithm based on a two stages graph solution using the computational model Gamma (General Abstract Model for Multiset mAnipulation). The proposed solution is the first parallel implementation of the method PPTS (Pairs of Plots in Two Stages). For this, we employed three Gamma implementations, where two of them exploited the resources of a parallel hardware environment, one using the MPI (Message Passing Interface) and the other one GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). Thus, the studied algorithm was evaluated from the parallelism exploited and finally was carried out a performance analysis of this algorithm in the three Gamma implementations used. The aim of this study is to provide an implementation on a real problem using for this the paradigm Gamma, which contributes to the implementations of the Gamma computational model, since it enables the performance analysis of these implementations and provides some suggestions for possible improvements. In addition, this work contributes to the PPTS method since it provides the parallelization of the first stage.

This paper presents a programming model approach that explicitly addresses the programmability of scientific code by annotating imperative code with its algorithmic structural behavior. This information is used to create hierarchical structures, as opposed to the flat structure that most programming models work with, which allows sound code transformation at any level of the code, adjusting the granularity of parallelization simultaneously with other parameters to better exploit the available hardware resources.

Atomic operations (atomics) such as Compare-andSwap (CAS) or Fetch-and-Add (FAA) are ubiquitous in parallel programming. Yet, performance tradeoffs between these operations and various characteristics of such systems, such as the structure of caches, are unclear and have not been thoroughly analyzed. In this paper we establish an evaluation methodology, develop a performance model, and present a set of detailed benchmarks for latency and bandwidth of different atomics. We consider various state-of-the-art x86 architectures: Intel Haswell, Xeon Phi, Ivy Bridge, and AMD Bulldozer. The results unveil surprising performance relationships between the considered atomics and architectural properties such as the coherence state of the accessed cache lines. One key finding is that all the tested atomics have comparable latency and bandwidth even if they are characterized by different consensus numbers. Another insight is that the design of atomics prevents any instructionlevel parallelism even if there are no dependencies between the issued operations. Finally, we discuss solutions to the discovered performance issues in the analyzed architectures. Our analysis can be used for making better design and algorithmic decisions in parallel programming on various architectures deployed in both off-the-shelf machines and large compute systems.

Although there has been a lot of work in multi-agent planning, very few state-of-the-art multi-agent planners exist;a notable exception being FMAP. In multi agent planning joint actions frequently arise. Although FMAP is quite powerful, it cannot handle a type of joint actions. In this paper, we show how FMAP can be tuned to handle such joint actions. The proposed system has been validated with a benchmark domain.

Virtual Platforms (VPs) are advantageous to develop and debug complex software for multi-and many-processor systems-on-chip (MPSoCs). VPs provide unrivalled controllability and visibility of the target, which can be exploited to examine bugs that cannot be reproduced easily in real hardware. However, VPs as used for debugging provide only traditional interfaces, such as step-based debuggers and traces, that do little to help with the enormous complexity of MPSoCs and their parallel software. Finding a bug is still largely left to the developer's experience and intuition, using manual means rather than automated solutions. To bridge this gap, this paper presents a novel VP debug visualization and control framework for concurrent software that allows examining and steering the target by means of an abstract representation of its inter-task interactions. Our framework reduces the effort required to understand complex concurrency patterns and helps to expose bugs.

Providing standardized building blocks for task-parallel programs within a language and its standard library has several advantages over other solutions. Close integration with compilers and runtime systems allows for potentially higher performance and portability facilitates wide-spread use. In the recently ratified C++11 standard, language constructs have been added along with a memory model to provide the developer with such building blocks. They allow accessing task parallelism and synchronization in a flexible and standardized way, potentially removing the need for third-party solutions. Nevertheless, since parallelization aims at high performance, an examination of the quality of implementation of these standardized means is necessary to determine their suitability for replacing established solutions. To that end, we present INNCABS, a new cross-platform cross-library benchmark suite consisting of 14 benchmarks with varying task granularities and synchronization requirements. Based on these benchmarks, we demonstrate that the performance of C++11 parallelism constructs in the three most commonly employed C++ runtime libraries prevents their use as a full replacement for third-party solutions due to simplistic parallelism implementations and high synchronization overheads.

This paper deals with the topic of iterative processing functions and has the primary goal to show its usefulness today for natural image processing. In simple terms, "natural images" are "photographs" of a typical environment where we live. Starting from theoretical mathematical models whose parameters are estimated from image samples towards implementation using modern technologies, visualization using iterative functions is gaining more and more support in computational modeling of biological visual systems, and also in many related areas of research from engineering, biology, medicine to astronomy or economics. This article analyzes the methods of generation, visualization, calculation and comparison of performance management implementations on fractal sets.
