The 2PARMA project focuses on the development of parallel programming models and run-time resource management techniques to exploit the features of many-core processor architectures. The main goals of the 2PARMA project are: the definition of a parallel programming model combining component-based and single-instruction multiple-thread approaches, instruction set virtualisation based on portable byte-code, run-time resource management policies and mechanisms as well as design space exploration methodologies for many-core computing architectures.

Remote Memory Access (RMA) enables direct access to remote memory to achieve high performance for HPC applications. However, most modern parallel programming models lack schemes for the remote process to detect the completion of RMA operations. Many previous works have proposed programming models and extensions to notify the communication peer, but they did not solve the multi-NIC aggregation, portability, hardware-software co-design, and usability problems. In this work, we proposed a Unified Notifiable RMA (UNR) library for HPC to address these challenges. In addition, we demonstrate the best practice of utilizing UNR within a real-world scientific application, PowerLLEL. We deployed UNR across four HPC systems, each with a different interconnect. The results show that PowerLLEL powered by UNR achieves up to a 36% acceleration on 1728 nodes of the Tianhe-Xingyi supercomputing system.

With the increasing progress of high performance computing infrastructure, it has become necessary to design and implement easy to use tools that are able to translate any legacy software application to parallel. A deep observation of the existing tools allowing such translation or conversion reveals that all of them are still far away from their expectations. Indeed, some recent studies stress the urgent need for such tools in order to respond better to users' needs in term of performance. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture based on web services which is able to translate any legacy software application into a parallel code. The resulting parallel code can be generated for any parallel programming model, also called the parallelization technique, such as MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, OpenCL or hybrid model. Our ultimate objective through this research is twofold. The first one is providing users a flexible architecture which is able to translate any sequential code into a parallel one, whatever the target parallel programming model. The second objective is providing parallel application developers a wide range of useful, easy to use parallel codes built as web services which can be included and used in their applications.

By providing highly efficient one-sided communication with globally shared memory space, Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) has become one of the most promising parallel computing models in high-performance computing (HPC). Meanwhile, FPGA is getting attention as an alternative compute platform for HPC systems with the benefit of custom computing and design flexibility. However, the exploration of PGAS has not been conducted on FPGAs, unlike the traditional message passing interface. This paper proposes FSHMEM, a software/hardware framework that enables the PGAS programming model on FPGAs. We implement the core functions of GASNet specification on FPGA for native PGAS integration in hardware, while its programming interface is designed to be highly compatible with legacy software. Our experiments show that FSHMEM achieves the peak bandwidth of 3813 MB/s, which is more than 95% of the theoretical maximum, outperforming the prior works by 9.5x. It records 0.35us and 0.59us latency for remote write and read operations, respectively. Finally, we conduct a case study on the two Intel D5005 FPGA nodes integrating Intel's deep learning accelerator. The two-node system programmed by FSHMEM achieves 1.94x and 1.98x speedup for matrix multiplication and convolution operation, respectively, showing its scalability potential for HPC infrastructure.

This paper describes the online, real-time traffic information system OLSIMv4 which is the updated version of the traffic information platform for the large-scale, real-world highway network of North Rhine-Westphalia. OLSIMv4 gathers its traffic information from microscopic traffic simulations that are based on loop detector data. The simulations take advantage of the topological road traffic network information such as speed limits, lane closings or mergings, and overtaking restrictions. As a result OLSIMv4 is prepared to use dynamic traffic information as provided by variable traffic signs and traffic or road works messages. Additionally, OLSIMv4 exploits thread-level parallelism on multi-core machines using a coarse-grained parallel simulation model. Moreover, it substitutes nonexistent and faulty loop detector data with calculated values in order to provide failure-safety. Its simulation results are available for four varying time horizons and they are in good accordance with empirical findings even in scenarios with larger distances between subsequent loop detectors.

MultiGPU nodes are widely used in high-performance computing and data centers. However, current programming models do not provide transparent, and portable support for automatically targeting multiple GPUs within a node. In this paper, we describe a new application programming interface based on the Kokkos programming model to enable array computation on multiple GPUs in a transparent and portable way across both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. We implement different variations of this technique to accommodate the exchange of stencils, and we provide autotuning to select the proper number of GPUs, depending on the computational cost of the operations to be computed on arrays. We evaluate our multiGPU extension on Summit (#5 TOP500), with six NVIDIA V100 Volta GPUs per node, and Crusher that contains identical hardware/software as Frontier (#1 TOP500), with four AMD MI250X GPUs, each with 2 Graphics Compute Dies (GCDs) for a total of 8 GCDs per node. We also compare the performance of this solution against the use of MPI + Kokkos. Our evaluation shows that the new Kokkos solution provides good scalability for many GPUs. than MPI + Kokkos.

Communication overhead is one of the dominant factors affecting performance in high-performance computing systems. To reduce the negative impact of communication, programmers overlap communication and computation by using asynchronous communication primitives. This increases code complexity, requiring more development effort and making less readable programs. This paper presents the hybrid use of MPI and SMPSs (SMP superscalar, a task-based shared-memory programming model) that allows the programmer to easily introduce the asynchrony necessary to overlap communication and computation. We demonstrate the hybrid use of MPI/SMPSs with the high-performance LINPACK benchmark (HPL), and compare it to the pure MPI implementation, which uses the look-ahead technique to overlap communication and computation. The hybrid MPI/SMPSs version significantly improves the performance of the pure MPI version, getting close to the asymptotic performance at medium problem sizes and still getting significant benefits at small/large problem sizes.

With the advent of the multicore era, the number of cores per computational node is increasing faster than the amount of memory. This diminishing memory to core ratio sometimes even prevents pure MPI applications to exploit all cores available on each node. A possible solution is to add a shared memory programming model like OpenMP inside the application to share variables between OpenMP threads that would otherwise be duplicated for each MPI task. Going to hybrid can thus improve the overall memory consumption, but may be a tedious task on large applications. To allow this data sharing without the overhead of mixing multiple programming models, we propose an MPI extension called Hierarchical Local Storage (HLS) that allows application developers to share common variables between MPI tasks on the same node. HLS is designed as a set of directives that preserve the original parallel semantics of the code and are compatible with C, C++ and Fortran languages and the OpenMP programming model. This new mechanism is implemented inside a state-of-the-art MPI 1.3 compliant runtime called MPC. Experiments show that the HLS mechanism can effectively reduce memory consumption of HPC applications. Moreover, by reducing data duplication in the shared cache of modern multicores, the HLS mechanism can also improve performances of memory intensive applications.

The conventional unified parallel computation model becomes more and more complicated which has weak pertinence and little guidance for each parallel computing phase. Therefore, a general layered and heterogeneous idea for parallel computation model research was proposed in this paper. The general layered heterogeneous parallel computation model was composed of parallel algorithm design model, parallel programming model, parallel execution model, and each model correspond to the three computing phases respectively. The properties of each model were described and research spots were also given. In parallel algorithm design model, an advanced language was designed for algorithm designers, and the corresponding interpretation system which based on text scanning was proposed to map the advanced language to machine language that runs on the heterogeneous software and hardware architectures. The parallel method library and parameter library were also provided to achieve the comprehensive utilization of the different computing resources and assign parallel tasks reasonably. Theoretical analysis results show that the general layered heterogeneous parallel computation model is clear and single goaled for each parallel computing phase.

Prediction plays an important role everywhere particularly in business, technology, and many others. It helps all types of organizations to improve profits and reduce the loss by taking timely decisions. Agriculture is also like an organization where farmers suffer with the loss most of the time in this business. This could be mainly because, there is no system to ensure the synchronization between the demand and supply for various food commodities required by the society. Science, enormous amount of data from different authorized sources like government websites revealing the demand and supply of various food commodities for forgoing period, this paper proposes a novel regression based AGRO forecasting model. This could help the farmers to make timely decisions and work towards fulfilling the actual needs of the society and avoiding putting themselves into the loss by growing unnecessary crops. Proposed model has been implemented using MapReduce parallel programming approach with Hadoop Distributed File System. This processes time series data with Regression model for predicting the demand, supply and price for the agricultural commodities in distributed environment. Resulting forecasted values are in the range of real values.
