Lots of papers indicate that detecting pitch period accurately is extremely important in speech compression coding, without putting forward enough argumentation. In this paper, we conduct abundant experiments to observe the particular influence of pitch accuracy on synthetic speech quality. In two typical types of speech compression coding, we add "white" and "babble" noise signal respectively with different SNRs, to see the changes of pitch detection results and the corresponding synthetic speech quality. Later, we conduct some replacement operations between detection results and between different coding schemes to find the difference. We give ideas that the performance of pitch detection methods are closely related to speech characteristics and the environmental noise, while pitch period plays roles of different importance in hybrid coding and parameter coding.

Bayesian harmonic modeling and parameters estimation are widely used in music signal *** this paper,we built a low bit rate monophonic music coding system based on Bayesian audio harmonic ***,we extract the model parameters using Bayesian estimation,and then adopt different coding methods for different characteristics of fundamental frequency,harmonics and other parameters *** result demonstrates that our method not only can realize efficient coding of arbitrary music signals at low bit rate less than 8kbps but also can play music in real time on the network.

Neural networks (NNs) have been extensively used in speech technology systems. In this paper. we present two novel applications of NNs in speech recognition and text-to-speech systems. In very large vocabulary speech recognition systems using the hypothesis-veri fit cation paradigm, the verification stage is usually the most time consuming. State of the art systems combine fixed size hypothesized search spaces with advanced pruning techniques. We propose a novel strategy to dynamically calculate the hypothesized search space, using neural networks as the estimation module and designing the input feature set with a careful greedy-based selection approach. The main achievement has been a statistically significant relative decrease in error rate of 33.53%, while getting a relative decrease in average computational demands of up to 19.40%. The prosodic modeling is one of the most important tasks for developing a new text-to-speech synthesizer, especially in a female-voice high-quality restricted-domain system. Our double objective is to get accurate predictors for both the fundamental frequency (F0) curve and phoneme duration by minimizing the model estimation error in a Spanish text-to-speech system, by means of a neural network estimator, which has proved to be an excellent tool for the modeling. The resulting system predicts prosody with very good results (for duration: 15.5 ms in RMS and a correlation factor of 0.8975: for F0: 19.80 Hz in RMS and a relative RMS error of 0.43) that clearly improves our previous rule-based system.

Automatic adaptation of a face model in a layered coder with an object-based analysis-synthesis layer and a knowledge-based layer

The topic of investigation was the extension of a generic object-based analysis-synthesis coder (OBASC) using the source model of moving flexible 3D objects' for the encoding of moving images at very low data rates to a knowledge-based coder in case scene-specific knowledge can be acquired. According to the coding concept, the OBASC describes and encodes each moving object of an image sequence by three parameter sets defining its motion, shape and surface color. The parameter sets of each object are obtained by image analysis. Using the coded parameter sets, an image can be synthesized by model-based image synthesis, The coder switches to a knowledge-based coder as soon as scene-specific knowledge can be acquired. In the example given in this paper, an algorithm tries to detect faces within moving objects using template matching and feature extraction techniques. If a face is detected, the face model Candide is adapted to the image sequence and integrated into the 3D model object describing the moving object, Due to this knowledge of the scene, the head and shoulders scene can be more efficiently modeled and encoded. Furthermore, the knowledge of the scene contents is used for controlling the coder. When compared to OBASC, the knowledge-based coder reduces the bit-rate required for encoding head and shoulder scenes by 17%. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

The topic of investigation was object-based analysis-synthesis coding (OBASC) using the source model of 'moving rigid 3D objects' for the encoding of moving images at very low data rates. According to the coding concept, each moving object of an image is described and encoded by three parameter sets defining its motion, shape and surface color. The parameter sets of each object are obtained by image analysis. They are coded using an object-dependent parameter coding. Using the coded parameter sets, an image can be synthesized by model-based image synthesis. In comparison to block-based hybrid coding, OBASC requires the additional transmission of shape parameters. The transmission of shape information avoids the mosquito and block artifacts of a block-based coder. Furthermore, important areas such as facial areas can be reconstructed with a significant image quality improvement. OBASC based on the source models of 'moving flexible 2D objects' and of 'moving rigid 3D objects' gives almost identical image quality for the same data rate. Therefore the use of more advanced source models like flexible 3D objects or 3D face models is expected to further improve image quality.

In this paper, an object-oriented analysis-synthesis coder is presented the first time in its entity concentrating on an optimal relationship of its components image analysis, image synthesis and parameter coding and on a comparison of its coding efficiency to block-oriented hybrid coding. As block-oriented hybrid coder, the RM8 of the CCITT is used. The presented object-oriented analysis-synthesis coder is based on the source model of moving flexible 2D-objects and encodes arbitrarily shaped objects instead of rectangular blocks. The objects are described by three parameter sets defining their motion, shape and colour (colour parameters denoting luminance as well as chrominance values of the object surface). The parameter sets of each object are obtained by image analysis and coded by an object dependent parameter coding. Using the coded parameter sets, an image can be reconstructed by model-based image synthesis. Experimental results show that transmitting shape information and allowing small position errors (geometrical distortions) avoid the mosquito and blocking artefacts of a block-oriented coder. Furthermore, important image areas such as facial areas can be reconstructed with an image quality improvement up to 4 dB using the image analysis. As a whole, the reconstructed image of an object-oriented analysis-synthesis coder appears sharper compared to block-oriented hybrid coding.

In an object-based analysis-synthesis coder each image of an image sequence is subdivided into arbitrarily shaped moving objects. The objects are described by three parameter sets defining their motion, shape and colour, where the colour parameters denote the luminance and chrominance values of the object surface. In order to increase the efficiency of the coder, a predictive technique for the coding of colour parameters is presented using image pattern prototypes for prediction. The prototypes are extracted from previously coded images and identically stored at the coder and the decoder. They can be used for the prediction of the colour parameters of an object by applying a suitably defined mapping function. The prediction error is coded by an adaptive combination of DCT and Intraframe DPCM. For the reconstruction of the colour parameters at the decoder the address of the image pattern prototype and the parameters of the mapping function have to be transmitted as side information. Prototype Prediction is only applied, when its data rate is lower than that of an extended hybrid scheme. At a transmission data rate of 64 kbit/s Prototype Prediction increases the PSNR by 2 dB in the areas of colour update.
