Development of the layout method for a high-rise housing complex using parametric algorithm

An algorithm-based parametric design method was developed to generate the layout of a high-rise housing complex with improved sunlight access and compliance with the relevant building code restrictions in South Korea. Integrated with computer-aided modelling and simulation, the algorithm automatically arranges multiple apartments according to their height, separation, the shaded area between adjacent buildings and setbacks from site boundaries. The algorithm was then implemented in three high-rise housing complexes across South Korea to validate its feasibility. In all three cases, the algorithm generated housing layouts that satisfied the considered building regulations and improved overall sunlight exposure conditions. Particularly, lower-density housing with fewer buildings or floors were found to be more effective in allowing sunlight access: more housing units were included in the longest sunlight exposure duration whereas fewer units were included in the shortest sunlight duration. The proposed parametric approach allows the effective execution of both diverse experiments in housing design layouts and assessments of layouts' sunlight access conditions, enhancing sustainable decision-making in the design process.

Generative design and performance optimization of residential buildings based on parametric algorithm

As passive green design and performance optimization are very important in the early design stage of green residences to reduce building energy consumption, energy-efficient green design and artificial intelligence technology are combined in this work for the design of residential buildings. A parametric generative algorithm is developed to automatically generate design schemes of typical Chinese urban residences based on performance-oriented design flow. By summarizing the workflow of architects, the algorithm based on the technical route is as follows: 1) spatial form features extraction of residence database;2) automatic generation and energy simulation of new design schemes;3) evaluation and screening of generated schemes. The generative algorithm is formulated with Rhino/Grasshopper and Python. Via a residence design case in Beijing, the design scheme with the lowest cooling and heating load among 1,595 automatically generated schemes is deemed as the optimal scheme. The total load of the optimal scheme is 15.8% lower than that of the worst scheme and 4.2% lower than that of the original scheme. Therefore, the parametric generative design of residences is able to facilitate passive green design in the early design stage and enhance energy efficiency without the increase of construction costs. In recent years, distribution network-connected single-phase and three-phase solar power plants have been growingly used in order to increase network sustainability, reduce loss, and improve voltage profile. Merging renewable distributed generation sources (DG) in distribution networks has caused some problems in measurement of power quality parameters. The use of electronic power devices in photovoltaic systems leads to injection of harmonic and inter-harmonic components into the distribution networks and, consequently, deviation of the network frequency around the main frequency;furthermore, the switching frequency of static inverters used in DG sources causes an increase in emission of supra-harmonics. Type and structure of devices used in static inverters of photovoltaic systems play fundamental role in generation and injection of harmonics, inter-harmonics, and supra-harmonics. The present paper is aimed to analyze the harmonic spectrum analysis in range of 0-2KHz caused by 2&3-level inverters used in a photovoltaic system using MUSIC parametric algorithm. The spectrum analysis results obtained from the above-mentioned simulation would be compared with other methods such as FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) algorithm and Welch's algorithm. Then the photovoltaic system's harmonic emission rate in frequency range of 2-150 KHz caused by 2&3-level inverter would be evaluated. Simulation has been performed as Real-time in Matlab/Smiulink Software environment. Results indicated that the harmonic spectrum analysis in presence of DG sources using MUSIC algorithm had high resolution and low error percentage;furthermore, the emission rate of supra-harmonics (2-150 KHz) using NPC 3-level inverter has been reduced by 50%.

Analysis of the basis weight for random fibrous networks is important to understand their microstructure, properties and performance. Two-dimensional microscopical images show in-plane fibers without giving any information on their distribution in three dimensions. This research introduces a fully parametric algorithm for computing the local basis weight of random fibrous networks using three-dimensional images because out-of-plane fiber orientation is important, especially for high-density or thick networks. Voxel models of real nonwoven webs were generated by an X-ray micro-computed tomography system. The developed algorithm could accurately estimate a local basis weight value for random fibrous networks produced with various manufacturing parameters. Numerical results computed with the developed method were compared with those obtained with a physical weight measurement technique. The algorithm was tested and validated for various nonwoven fabrics with different densities. It was observed that the developed method can be used to examine and/or compare the basis weight of a wide range of random fibrous networks. In addition, it can be used to predict the basis weight for fabrics, especially in a new product development process.

Automation in architectural design: optimization and decision-making in interference design

The design of architectural projects encompasses a complex array of types, constraints, and contradictions, necessitating a high reliance on the personal experience of architects. Automated generative design aids in exploring various design alternatives, but current research grapples with challenges such as limited user customization, inadequate integration with site environments, and insufficient amalgamation of architectural form and performance optimization. This paper develops an algorithm for early-stage architectural generation, which employs a multi- interference item strategy, serving as a highly customizable design tool. In conjunction with performance optimization based on the NSGA-II algorithm, it introduces a versatile workflow. This paper applied this workflow in a residential building project, whilst incorporating indices such as structural performance, material usage, and site plot ratio as optimization objectives and constraints. The resulting design solutions enhance structural performance while meeting the constraints. The generative design workflow of this study boasts advantages in efficiency, performance, and customization levels. It enables designers to explore the design space in a customized manner, yielding effective solutions within a reasonable timeframe.

A heterogeneous pore design algorithm for material extrusion additive manufacturing

Material extrusion additive manufacturing offers great potential for customizing matters with complex external contours, and filament diameter-adjustable 3D (FDA-3D) printing strategy provides fresh impetus to create heterogeneous porous structures inside these complex matters. However, the absence of supporting algorithms to implement FDA-3D printing severely hinders its widespread use. In this paper, we develop a heterogeneous pore design (HPD) algorithm aimed at advancing the development of FDA-3D printing for producing heterogeneous porous matters. The HPD algorithm consists of three sub-algorithms: model design, collapse compensation, and fabrication file (G-codes) generation. As proofs of concept, we utilize this algorithm to 3D print radial gradient and letter-embedded gradient materials following specific steps: (1) designing the heterogeneous porous models with collapse compensation in Grasshopper (R) and displaying them in Rhinocores (R);(2) customizing and writing the corresponding G-codes files by following the material extrusion 3D printer's control rules;(3) upgrading a commercial extrusion printer to FDA-3D print the design models via the customized G-codes. Micro-computed tomography-based 3D reconstruction and quantified pore size maps for the fabricated objects demonstrate the high capability of this HPD algorithm. Overall, the HPD algorithm holds the potential to revolutionize material extrusion 3D printers cost-effectively, creating new possibilities for material extrusion of heterogeneous materials.

A parametric approach to integer linear fractional programming: Newton's and Hybrid-Newton methods for an optimal road maintenance problem

In this paper we study a parametric approach, one of the resolution methods for solving integer linear fractional programming (ILFP) problems in which all functions in the objective and constraints are linear and all variables are integers. We develop a novel complexity bound of Newton's method applied to ILFP problems when variables are bounded. The analytical result for the worst-case performance shows that the number of iterations of Newton's algorithm to find an optimal solution of the ILFP problem is polynomially bounded. We also propose a Hybrid-Newton algorithm and empirically show that it is relatively faster and more robust than the Newton algorithm under various data scenarios. To illustrate the applicability of our algorithm and provide concrete managerial prescriptions, we consider a case study of a road maintenance planning problem in Seoul, Korea. The results show that our fractional efficiency measure is capable of obtaining the maximum cost-efficient lifetime of a road given a limited maintenance budget. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Automated door placement in architectural plans through combined deep-learning networks of ResNet-50 and Pix2Pix-GAN

Previous studies on automating building design with deep learning primarily focused on planning room layouts, limiting the design of architectural elements such as doors and windows. This led to the misalignment of rooms, which in turn resulted in a design proposal with no space for architectural openings. In particular, the placement of a door that can set the circulation throughout the building and the privacy gradient as a connection between rooms is still determined by a rule or a designer. To overcome these limitations, this study conducted automated door placement in architectural plans through combined deep-learning networks of ResNet-50 and Pix2Pix-GAN. A case study on residential buildings shows the classification accuracy for the existence of doors using ResNet-50 is on average 96.6%, but the interconnectivity of each room has limitations. Pix2Pix-GAN enhances the interconnectivity of each space compared to the door generation results using ResNet-50. Post-processing that combines ResNet-50 and Pix2Pix-GAN has shown an enhanced accuracy of door generation by 16.54% compared to Pix2Pix-GAN alone. In addition to determining door existence, the interconnectivity between all rooms has also been improved by integrating the two models. These results can assist architects in their decision-making process by automatically generating door layout alternatives that take into consideration the spatial interconnectivity.

Assessing Crimp of Fibres in Random Networks with 3D Imaging

The analysis of fibrous structures using micro-computer tomography (mu CT) is becoming more important as it provides an opportunity to characterise the mechanical properties and performance of materials. This study is the first attempt to provide computations of fibre crimp for various random fibrous networks (RFNs) based on mu CT data. A parametric algorithm was developed to compute fibre crimp in fibres in a virtual domain. It was successfully tested for six different X-ray mu CT models of nonwoven fabrics. Computations showed that nonwoven fabrics with crimped fibres exhibited higher crimp levels than those with non-crimped fibres, as expected. However, with the increased fabric density of the non-crimped nonwovens, fibres tended to be more crimped. Additionally, the projected fibre crimp was computed for all three major 2D planes, and the obtained results were statistically analysed. Initially, the algorithm was tested for a small-size, nonwoven model containing only four fibres. The fraction of nearly straight fibres was computed for both crimped and non-crimped fabrics. The mean value of the fibre crimp demonstrated that fibre segments between intersections were almost straight. However, it was observed that there were no perfectly straight fibres in the analysed RFNs. This study is applicable to approach employing a finite-element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model/analyse RFNs.

An Integrated Assessment Framework of Economic, Environmental, and Human Health Impacts Using Scan-to-BIM and Life-Cycle Assessment in Existing Buildings

The significance of environmental management of existing buildings in reducing the environmental impact of the construction sector is increasingly emphasized. However, life-cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate a building's environmental burden requires considerable time and costs for the collection and interpretation of data needed for analysis. Therefore, this study proposed an integrated assessment framework of economic, environmental, and human health impacts using scan-to-building information modeling (BIM) and LCA in existing buildings. To verify the proposed framework, a case study was conducted. A BIM model with an error rate of 1.442% can be automatically generated from the three-dimensional (3D) point cloud using parametric algorithm. The total cost for the target case was calculated at USD 162,769, and the environmental cost accounted for the largest percentage at 97.15%. The developed framework in this study holds significance because it enables the automated assessment of economic, environmental, and human health impacts of existing buildings through the integration of BIM and LCA.
