In recent years, grid-connected inverters have gained wide prominence, primarily attributed to the surge in distributed energy resources. To ensure the reliable operation of these inverters, it is crucial to adequately damp the resonance peak of the LCL filter at the inverter output. By achieving this, the grid-connected inverter guarantees the system's stability while minimizing the harmonic content in the current injected into the distribution grid. To address this issue, this paper proposes the utilization of digital differentiators in conjunction with optimized wideband differentiators, which are designed using the parks-mcclellan (PM) algorithm. These differentiators are applied specifically to the LCL filter capacitor voltage to dampen the resonance peak effectively. Simulation results univocally demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2023 IEEE.

FIR filter solution to unusual gain responses arising in parks-mcclellan algorithm

A linear-phase FIR filter with more than two bands, designed by employing the parks-mcclellan algorithm, may exhibit an undesirable gain response in the transition band. In this paper, a practical FIR filter solution to such undesirable results is proposed, whereby a modified sampling kernel and the complementary filter concept are utilized. In particular, the proposed approach provides a closed-form design of type-1 linear-phase FIR filters satisfying the given filter specification.

In this paper, a linear phase FIR filter is designed using particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithms (GA). Two design cases are considered. In the first case, the filter length, passband and stopband frequencies, and the ratio of the passband and stopband ripples size are specified. In the second case, a feasible passband and stopband ripples size in addition to the other three filter specifications are specified. The later situation is not explicitly considered by the parks-mcclellan (PM) algorithm. Furthermore, the PSO and the GA are used to design optimum FIR filters for which the filter coefficients are represented using finite word length. In all cases, the design goal is successfully achieved using the PSO and compared with that obtained using the GA. For the problem at hand, it is found that the PSO outperforms the GA in some of the presented design cases. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Accurate estimation of minimum filter length for optimum FIR digital filters

This paper presents an accurate estimation formula of minimum filter length for optimum (minimax criterion based) linear-phase finite impulse response (FIR) few-pass digital filters. Two estimation formulae have been already proposed;however, they have some problems which lead to wrong estimation, Discussing the problems based on our experimental results, a new estimation formula is newly proposed, The accuracy of the proposed formula is evaluated in comparison with that of the conventional formulae, Furthermore, the proposed formula is applied to the design of high-pass, band-pass, and band-stop filters. The estimation accuracy is discussed also in this case.

Design of p-norm linear phase FIR differentiators using adaptive modification rate artificial bee colony algorithm

In this paper, an adaptive modification rate artificial bee colony (AMR-ABC) algorithm is proposed by incorporating a novel adaptive modification rate to adaptively balance exploration and exploitation to determine which parameters (or the number of parameters) to be updated in a solution during each iteration. The performance of the AMR-ABC algorithm is compared to those the standard ABC algorithm and its two variants, and the parks-mcclellan algorithm for designing Type 3 (orders: 14, 26, and 38) and Type 4 (orders: 13, 25, and 37) linear phase FIR differentiators to evaluate their design capabilities. Design results have shown that the proposed AMR-ABC algorithm (i) outperforms four other design algorithms with the lowest p-norm error in each of the six differentiator designs and (ii) is robust such that the same p-norm error solution with an equiripple amplitude response in each of the six differentiator designs can be obtained by repeating a design with a different population of randomly generated initial solutions. The filter coefficients of six linear phase FIR differentiator designs are given as benchmarks to compare the p-norm error performance of the AMR-ABC algorithm to other algorithms. The AMR-ABC algorithm is attractive to be used for optimisation in this and other design problems.

Downlink Precoding for Multiple Users in FDD Massive MIMO Without CSI Feedback

Massive MIMO can provide downlink access to multiple user equipments (UEs) through appropriate precoding or beamforming. To obtain precoding matrices for users, channel state information at the transmitter (CSI-T) is usually mandatory, requiring downlink training and CSI feedback at least in the frequency division duplex mode. However, such training is typically considered impractical because of the considerable amount of pilot signals and feedback overhead. In this paper, we propose downlink precoding methods that do not require UEs to generate feedback CSI for massive MIMO systems with uniform linear arrays. By recognizing the similarity between uplink and downlink channels, the base station is assumed to have partial knowledge on downlink channels (more specifically, the angles of departure of the major propagation paths of each user). Using such partial channel knowledge, we propose two precoding design methods based on robust beamforming and the design of a spatial-domain optimum finite impulse response filter. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a sum rate near that of a feedback-based precoding method with ideal CSI-T. In contrast to an alternative method based on beamspace division, the numerical results also display the performance advantage of the proposed method.

Least squares linear phase FIR filter design and its VLSI implementation

In this work we present least squares (LS) approach to design linear phase Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter. Since the design of FIR digital filters is non-analytic, we aim at ideal zero-phase magnitude response and minimize the weighted error in passband and stopbands. The problem of least squares can then be solved non-iteratively by solving system of linear equations. Solution of which yields impulse response that is both real and symmetric. Frequency response of the proposed LS FIR filter shows a flat passband, and higher stop-band attenuation than traditional window based FIR design and comparable attenuation with parks-mcclellan method of the same order. In addition we have implemented LS FIR filter on FPGA based VLSI architectures. Performance evaluation of proposed LS FIR design on VLSI architecture shows comparable throughput, area and power consumption compared to classical filter design approaches.

UltraWide Band Cognitive Pulse Shaping under Physical-Layer QoS Constraints

Ultra Wide Band (UWB) communication systems operate in the frequency range between 0 and 10.6 GHz so they induce the Scientific Community to solve the problem of coexistence with concurrent telecommunication services. This is the leading reason why both the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) gave strict indications about the spectral limits to be respected and require the transmitter and receiver to be compliant with these spectral masks. To this end, it is mandatory to carefully shape the UWB pulse, for this can be accurately designed so as to avoid severe performance reduction while guarding inter-systems coexistence. The UWB technology and, more, the pulse shaping allow to apply the cognitive paradigm where the transmitter and receiver are the actors of this functionality since the performance are tied to channel features and interference presence. The widespread choice of Gaussian-like pulses has proven, however, largely suboptimal from a power emission point of view since they fail to optimize performance. Goal of this contribution is to show how to achieve a good compromise between spectral emission, rate and synchronization errors robustness, via a modified version of the parks-mcclellan method, considering channel impairments due to its frequency-selective nature and to the inter-pulse interference.

We present a new simple form window function with application to FIR filter design, which has superior performance compared to the several commonly used windows. The new window is almost equi-ripple. For sufficiently high orders, the proposed window has the main lobe width of roughly equal to that of the commonly used Hamming window, while featuring 5.6 similar to 12 dB smaller side lobe peak. For lower window lengths, the performance of Hamming window is degraded, while the new window maintains its maximum side lobe peak about -48 similar to-49.5 dB compared to -37 similar to -39 dB of Hamming window, and at the same time offers smaller main lobe width. Our results also show substantial performance improvement of the proposed window compared to the Gaussian, Kaiser, and Lanczos windows. A performance comparison of the proposed and Dolph-Chebyshev windows is also presented. The designed FIR filters confirm the efficiency of the new window.
