Steel cables serve as the key structural components in long-span bridges, and the force state of the steel cable is deemed to be one of the most important determinant factors representing the safety condition of bridge structures. The disadvantages of traditional cable force measurement methods have been envisaged and development of an effective alternative is still desired. In the last decade, the vision-based sensing technology has been rapidly developed and broadly applied in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). With the aid of vision-based multi-point structural displacement measurement method, monitoring of the tensile force of the steel cable can be realized. In this paper, a novel cable force monitoring system integrated with a multi-point pattern matching algorithm is developed. The feasibility and accuracy of the developed vision-based force monitoring system has been validated by conducting the uniaxial tensile tests of steel bars, steel wire ropes, and parallel strand cables on a universal testing machine (UTM) as well as a series of moving loading experiments on a scale arch bridge model. The comparative study of the experimental outcomes indicates that the results obtained by the vision-based system are consistent with those measured by the traditional method for cable force measurement.

To overcome the drawbacks of the traditional contact-type sensor for structural displacement measurement, the vision-based technology with the aid of the digital image processing algorithm has received increasing concerns from the community of structural health monitoring (SHM). The advanced vision-based system has been widely used to measure the structural displacement of civil engineering structures due to its overwhelming merits of non-contact, long-distance, and high-resolution. However, seldom currently-available vision-based systems are capable of realizing the synchronous structural displacement measurement for multiple points on the investigated structure. In this paper, the method for vision-based multi-point structural displacement measurement is presented. A series of moving loading experiments on a scale arch bridge model are carried out to validate the accuracy and reliability of the vision-based system for multi-point structural displacement measurement. The structural displacements of five points on the bridge deck are measured by the vision-based system and compared with those obtained by the linear variable differential transformer (LVDT). The comparative study demonstrates that the vision-based system is deemed to be an effective and reliable means for multi-point structural displacement measurement.

Intrusion detection technology can help the system to deal with network attacks, extend the security management ability of the system manager and increase the integrality of information security foundation structure. pattern matching algorithm is the core algorithm of intrusion detection system based on feature matching as well as an algorithm which is universally used in current intrusion detection equipment. A design scheme of intrusion detection system based on pattern matching algorithm is proposed in this paper. Meanwhile, aiming at several key modules of intrusion detection system, a detailed analysis of data acquisition module, protocol processing module, feature matching module, log record module and intrusion response module is also given in this paper.

With the remarkable increase in the number of DNA and proteins sequences, it is necessary to study pattern matching in querying sequence patterns in the biological sequence database. To further raise the performance of the pattern matching algorithm, a fast hybrid algorithm (called ZTFS) is presented. It bases on the basic method of Zhu-Takaoka algorithm and absorbs the idea of Fast Search during the pattern matching to reduce the number of comparisons, and thus improves the performance. The best, worst and average cases in time complexities of the algorithm are also outlined. The experimental results show that the new algorithm works better than other compared algorithms, especially in case of small alphabets such as nucleotides sequences, and thus the proposed algorithm is more suitable for exact pattern matching in biological sequences.

Dynamic displacement of structures is an important index for in-service structural condition and behavior assessment, but accurate measurement of structural displacement for large-scale civil structures such as long-span bridges still remains as a challenging task. In this paper, a vision-based dynamic displacement measurement system with the use of digital image processing technology is developed, which is featured by its distinctive characteristics in non-contact, long-distance, and high-precision structural displacement measurement. The hardware of this system is mainly composed of a high-resolution industrial CCD (charge-coupled-device) digital camera and an extended-range zoom lens. Through continuously tracing and identifying a target on the structure, the structural displacement is derived through cross-correlation analysis between the predefined pattern and the captured digital images with the aid of a pattern matching algorithm. To validate the developed system, MTS tests of sinusoidal motions under different vibration frequencies and amplitudes and shaking table tests with different excitations (the El-Centro earthquake wave and a sinusoidal motion) are carried out. Additionally, in-situ verification experiments are performed to measure the mid-span vertical displacement of the suspension Tsing Ma Bridge in the operational condition and the cable-stayed Stonecutters Bridge during loading tests. The obtained results show that the developed system exhibits an excellent capability in real-time measurement of structural displacement and can serve as a good complement to the traditional sensors.

Heparin is a member of the negatively charged glycosaminoglycan family which is present in the extracellular matrix of all eukaryotic cells. Heparin-binding proteins (HBPs) play an important role in various biological processes like cell signaling, development, and angiogenesis. Interestingly, despite their wide array of functions, very little knowledge exists on the precise structural determinants that govern the specificity of the heparin-protein interaction(s). In this context, a critical survey of the presence of heparin-binding amino acid sequence(s) is a pre-requisite for the development of therapeutic principles against heparin protein-mediated diseases. Many proteins have been shown in vivo to bind to heparin. Based on previous structural studies on heparin-binding proteins (HBPs), nineteen consensus heparin-binding motifs have been identified. The length of these strings varies between five and eight amino acids. These heparin-binding motifs were found to contain a pattern of basic natural amino acids (B= lysine/arginine/histidine) spread between the remaining 17 natural amino acids (X). In the present study, a novel search algorithm has been developed to identify the frequency of occurrence of heparin-binding motifs in 200 proteins which have been experimentally identified to have a strong heparin-binding affinity. The list includes the 23 fibroblast growth factors that bind strongly to heparin, whose sequences were obtained from the UniProt Knowledgebase. Results reveal that the HBPs contain multiple putative heparin-binding motifs. Motifs such as, XBXBX, XBXXBX, and XBXXXBX are most preferred in the heparin-binding proteins. Lysine and arginine are the most preferred basic amino acids (B) in the HBPs. Interestingly, hydrophobic amino acids methionine and isoleucine rarely occur in the heparin-binding motifs. Study on a new type of fingerprint identification algorithm and its application in intelligent home electric control lock problem. The traditional fingerprint recognition algorithms on fingerprint minutiae matching accuracy is low, difficult to accurately extract details, leading to lock malfunction or could not be opened. In order to overcome this problem, improved Point pattern fingerprint recognition matching algorithm, joined the matching weight coefficient on the base of pattern matching algorithm, and gives the hardware structure of fingerprint identification system, the improved algorithm is successfully applied in smart home applications, the example shows that, the improved algorithm can effectively improve the recognition rate, reduce false positives, has a certain practical value.

WLAN-based Outdoor Localisation Using pattern matching algorithm

Location detection is a very important issue in a wireless environment, allowing realisation of several useful services linked to the knowledge of the position of a mobile user (e.g. path optimisation, management of field crew in a large plant, providing a mobile robot with autonomous capabilities). Literature presents many approaches for location detection of a mobile device in a WLAN. One of these is based on the use of a pattern matching algorithm which provides for the position of the mobile device given the Radio Signal Strength (RSS) values received by it. Generally, localisation in WLAN environment is limited to indoor scenarios. Although GPS is commonly used for outdoor location detection, localisation in a WLAN communication infrastructure may be realised also for outdoor areas. The main advantage is a save in the hardware needed for the localisation, as it only requires the use of the WLAN communication card;further, the current limits of GPS, which may introduce not negligible errors in outdoor location detection, encourages the investigation of other techniques for outdoor localisation. On account of what said, the first aim of the paper is to investigate the feasibility of outdoor localisation of a mobile device in a WLAN environment;an IEEE 802.11b-based WLAN will be considered. Outdoor localisation has been realised using a pattern matching algorithm and the relevant performance, measured in terms of location errors, has been evaluated and compared with that commonly provided for by a GPS device. Then the paper will present a proposal for localisation, aimed to reduce the complexity typically featured by the pattern matching algorithm based approach when used for wide areas;the proposal is based on the use of a signal propagation model able to predict the RSS values available in each position of a IEEE 802.11b WLAN. Performance of the novel approach has been evaluated for outdoor localisation and the main results achieved will be shown in the paper. F

New technologies like high-speed video recording give new insights into the flowing behavior of snow. At the SLF snow chute at Weissfluhjoch Davos a setup was developed, which allowed us to record high-speed movies of the ground near shear layer of the chute flows with a frame rate of 1000 frames per second. Frictional and collisional processes can be observed in high slow motion in the videos obtained. Downstream velocity profiles were generated by a pattern matching algorithm and compared to velocity profiles obtained from optical sensors mounted next to the high-speed camera. The comparison shows good agreement for most experiments. The temporal and spatial resolution is much higher for the high-speed video data. Because the optical velocity sensors only measure velocities in downstream direction they overestimate the velocities when flow-normal velocity components exist as well. All measured velocity profiles show very high shear rates near the ground. The height of the this highly sheared zone depends on snow properties. Above this highly sheared zone the shear rates decrease significantly tending to zero for certain snow types.
