This paper built a finite element model of the Halbach permanent magnet motor, whose accuracy was verified by comparing the output phase back-electromotive force of the model with that of the prototype motor. Keeping other parameters constant as far as possible, we investigated five variables one by one to find out the law how these variables affect air gap magnetic flux, which is a basis for further optimization research. After a new variable named Cost constructed to reflect the distortion ratio of air gap magnetic flux, this paper performed some optimization experiments by studying five parameters of the motor using Taguchi algorithm, Genetic algorithm and pattern search algorithm. On the basis of summarizing the advantages and disadvantages of these algorithms, we proposed two kinds of novel hybrid optimization algorithms, which are named as Taguchi-pattern search algorithm and Genetic-pattern search algorithm, and proved the validity and practicability by experiments and finite element calculations.

In this paper, we present a day-ahead optimal scheduling for reactive power of PV inverters and tap position of on-load tap changer (OLTC) in distribution network. We used a pattern search optimization algorithm based on the forecasted load demand and PVs active power generation. While the objective is to minimize the node voltage deviation and network losses, the maximum number of tap operation is maintained in a predefined limit. A modified IEEE 34 node test feeder is used to demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed scheduling approach. A stochastic analysis is presented to show the performance of the proposed optimal scheduling in the presence of forecast errors of the PV generation and load demand.

A general method for active surface adjustment of cable net structures with smart actuators

Active surface adjustment of cable net structures is becoming significant when large-size cable net structures are widely applied in various fields, especially in satellite antennas. A general-duty adjustment method based on active cables is proposed to achieve active surface adjustment or surface profile reconfiguration of cable net structures. Piezoelectric actuators and voice coil actuators are selected for constructing active cable structures and their simplified mechanical models are proposed. A bilevel optimization model of active surface adjustment is proposed based on the nonlinear static model established by the direct stiffness method. A pattern search algorithm combined with the trust region method is developed to solve this optimization problem. Numerical examples of a parabolic cable net reflector are analyzed and different distribution types of active cables are compared.

A novel acc-jerk-limited NURBS interpolation enhanced with an optimized S-shaped quintic feedrate scheduling scheme

This paper presents a new adaptive acc-jerk-limited nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) interpolation method based on an optimized S-shaped C-2 quintic feedrate planning scheme. At first, the modified quintic feedrate profile for each sharp corner during the acceleration/deceleration (acc/dec) stage is constructed. To this end, two feedrate slope correction coefficients (FSCC) are introduced for zero end point acceleration and jerk conception in acc/dec stage of each sharp corner. Also, a new algorithm is recommended to compute the acc/dec stage traverse time with respect to the deceleration starting time in this paper. Then, the modified quintic feedrate scheduling scheme equipped with the FSCC is improved for the tool path containing several sharp corners. The FSCC and the deceleration starting times corresponding to all sharp corners are evaluated using an optimization method such that the total machining time to be minimized. In this paper, the pattern search algorithm equipped with the nonlinear constraint function including the acceleration and jerk limitations Matlab code is used for obtaining the optimized parameters to accomplish the acc-jerk-limited feedrate scheduling scheme along the tool path. The proposed interpolation method is performed for several case studies and compared with the previously published methods to evaluate the effectiveness of the designed adaptive acc-jerk-limited feedrate scheduling scheme. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed interpolation algorithm is capable for providing a smooth feedrate transition for all stages of motion along the tool path and yields satisfactory performances such as total machining time and the interpolation steps.

The improved NURBS-based C² PH spline curve contour following task with PDFF controller

In this paper, using the specifications of nodal points on a nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) curve of three degrees with respect to NURBS curve parameter and defining the coefficients for the velocity and acceleration vectors on these points, a new method is presented to design a tool path via C-2 PH spline curves. Values of the velocity/acceleration vector coefficients corresponding to the nodal points on the original NURBS curve are computed by pattern search algorithm. To this end, the normal distance between the constructed C-2 PH spline curve and its corresponding original NURBS curve is considered as the objective function. Using combination of the time-dependent feed rate interpolation in the acceleration/deceleration phase of the motion and the constant feed rate interpolation in the middle region of the motion, the position commands of the designed NURBS-based C-2 PH spline curve are generated. Several improved NURBS-based C-2 PH spline curve following tasks were implemented with pseudo-derivative feedback feed forward (PDFF) controller. The experimental and simulation results confirm that the devised interpolator with designed PDFF controller is not only feasible for machining the complicated tool path represented in the improved NURBS-based C-2 PH spline form but also yields satisfactory contouring performance under variable feed rate.

Developing a flow control strategy to reduce nutrient load in a reclaimed multi-reservoir system using a 2D hydrodynamic and water quality model

Blocking the natural bi-directional flow in an estuarine system using an artificial dyke has commonly caused serious water quality problems. In the southwestern part of South Korea, a parallel triple-reservoir system was constructed by blocking the mouth of three different rivers (Yeongsan, Okcheon, and Kumja), which were then interconnected using two open channels. This system has experienced a deterioration in water quality due to pollutants accumulated from the upper watershed, and has continually discharged pollutant loads to the outer ocean. Therefore, the objective of this study is to establish an effective dam operation plan for reducing nutrient loads released from the integrated reservoir. In this study, the CE-QUAL-W2 model, which is a 2-dimentional hydrodynamic and water quality model, was applied to predict the pollutant load released from each reservoir in response to different flow scenarios for the interconnecting channel. The model was calibrated using two novel methods: a sensitivity analysis to determine meaningful model parameters, and a pattern search to optimize the parameters. From the scenario analysis using flow control, it was determined that the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) loadings could be reduced by 27.2% and 6.6%, respectively, under the optimal channel flow scenario by regulating the chlorophyll-a concentration in the reservoir. The results confirm that effective dam operation could contribute to a decrease in pollutant loads in the receiving seawater body. As such, this study suggests operational strategies for a multi-reservoir system that can be used to reduce the nutrient load being discharged from reservoirs. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. An Active Power Allocation Method for Wind-solar-batteries Hybrid Power System

In this article, an active power allocation method based on multi-objective optimization technique for wind-solar-batteries hybrid system (WSBHPS) is proposed. The problem of active power allocation of WSBHPS is formulated as following multi-objectives: minimizing of error between the output power of WSBHPS and desired power from the grid, minimizing start/stop switch number of power generation units, and maximizing the utilization of the regulation ability of wind turbines. The short-term power prediction of wind and solar power is utilized to quantify the available output power of each generation component, which is taken as constraint conditions of optimization problem with state of charge (SOC) of the batteries. The pattern-search algorithm is utilized to solve the multi-objective optimization problems. The proposed method is illustrated by implementing it to the active power allocation of a WSBHPS in simulation. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method has better active power output performance and less fluctuating rate compared with conventional average method. This method not only could maintain the SOC of batteries in an appropriate range, but also could reduce the on-or-off switching number of wind turbines and PV modules.

In this work the scheduling optimization of micro-CHP systems producing electricity and heat for a single-family house situated in Italy is addressed. Three different commercial prime movers have been analyzed separately, and for each of them the operation scheduling that maximizes the revenues for the energy cogeneration with respect to the separate generation has been evaluated by means of an optimization algorithm.

In this study the optimal operation of micro-CHP systems producing electricity and heat for a single-family house situated in Italy is addressed considering the effects of heat dissipation relative to thermal storage systems. Three different prime movers have been analyzed separately, and for each of them the operation scheduling that maximizes the revenues for the energy cogeneration with respect to the separate generation has been evaluated by means of an optimization algorithm.

Solving LFC problem in an interconnected power system using superconducting magnetic energy storage

This paper proposes the combination of a load frequency control (LFC) with superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) to solve the LFC problem in interconnected power systems. By using this combination, the speed damping of frequency and tie-line power flow deviations is considerably increased. A new control strategy of SMES is proposed in this paper. The problem of determining optimal parameters of PID and SMES control loop is considered as an optimization problem and a pattern search algorithm (PS) optimization is employed to solve it. The simulation results show that if an SMES unit is installed in an interconnected power system, in addition to eliminating oscillations and deviations, the settling time in the frequency and tie-line power flow responses is considerably reduced.
