Spatial distribution of typical persistent organic pollutants in South China Sea by economical solid phase microextraction with hierarchical porous biochar

Rapid, accurate, and cost-effective determination of typical persistent organic pollutants in marine water provides crucial support for risk management and remediation. Herein, an activated Cucumis metuliferus biochar (ACMB) with large specific surface area, hierarchical structure, and large pore volume, was synthesized through a simple treatment process. Subsequently, it was fabricated as uniform solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber at a cost of less than 0.17 Renminbi (RMB) per fiber for the extraction of five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and four organochlorine compounds (OCs) in marine water. The ACMB-coated fiber exhibited exceptional enrichment factors ranging from 1601 to 6732, and outperformed the commercial fibers in terms of stability, extraction performance, and production cost, verifying its outstanding practicability. By coupling it with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), a highly automatic method was developed, exhibiting low detection limits (0.30-0.99 ng L-1), wide linear ranges (5-2000 ng L-1), and good reproducibility. It realized the highly efficient determinations of PAHs and OCs in marine water samples collected from South China Sea (n = 18), providing the spatial distribution of acenaphthene, fluorene, and anthracene in the marine environment.

Regulating generation of radical and non-radical in plasma systems for selective degradation of persistent organic pollutants in water with high salinity resistance and slight environmental implication: Regulatory method and selective mechanism

The complexity of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and high concentration of inorganic ion in practical wastewater pose great challenges to non-thermal plasma (NTP). How to treat POPs with high selectivity and high salt resistance is an important problem in the field of water treatment. This paper proposes for the first time to solve the above problems by regulating radicals and non-radicals. The regulated valence band level (2.38 V vs. NHE) of C3N4 by doping of B can effectively activate the generation of radicals. Cu doping of C3N4 can also provide more H2O2 catalytic sites for generation of non-radicals. The C3N4 allows NTP to activate persulfate efficiently and increase the radicals and non-radicals jointly. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), bisphenol A (BPA) and methyl orange (MO) along with 13 other contaminants were selected as typical POPs. Based on experiments and theoretical calculations, the degradation effects, catalysis mechanism, water matrix, intermediate product toxicity and influencing factors were investigated. Research shows that the radical system has higher selectivity for hydroxyl and amine groups, while the non-radical system has higher selectivity for benzene ring. For the same pollutant, the radical system (99.3 %) often exhibits a better degradation effect versus non-radical system (78.2 %). However, non-radical systems show phenomenal adaptability to complex water matrix environments and lower intermediate toxicity in degradation process. This paper provides an important reference for regulating radicals and non-radicals to improve pollutant selectivity and salinity adaptability.

Associations between blood levels of persistent organic pollutants and oxidative stress biomarkers among women in France in the 90's

persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a group of organic chemicals potentially toxic to human health. Induction of oxidative stress is one of the suspected mechanisms of action. The aims of this study were to model exposure-response functions between blood levels of a mixture of POPs and biomarkers of oxidative stress, to identify potential interactions between POPs, and to estimate the overall effect of the mixture. Levels of POPs and oxidative stress biomarkers were measured in the blood of 467 women from the French E3N cohort study, aged 45-73 years, collected between 1994 and 1999. In total, 41 POPs quantified in at least 75% of samples, and 3 antioxidant enzymes (Superoxide Dismutase 1 (SOD1), Superoxide Dismutase 2 (SOD2), and alpha-Glutathione S-Transferase (GST alpha)) were included. A Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) model was fitted for each oxidative stress biomarker, including the 41 POPs as exposure variables and adjusting for potential confounders identified using a directed acyclic graph. Additionally, linear regression models including each POP biomarker separately adjusted for potential confounders were run. With the BKMR models, only two POPs biomarkers were found associated to SOD1 (PFPeS) and SOD2 (PCB- 156). A greater number of POPs appeared associated to GST alpha (oxychlordane, dieldrin, PFUnDA, PFHpA, PCB-28, PCB-153, PCB-180, PBDE-47, PBDE-100, and PBDE-153). Single-pollutant linear models also highlighted statistically significant associations in the same direction as the BKMR model. The BKMR models also highlighted non-linear cumulative effects, with overall negative trends for SOD1 and SOD2 and a positive trend for GST alpha. These findings support that oxidative stress may be involved in the mechanisms linking the exposure of mixtures of POPs and related health effects. Further epidemiological studies on larger populations, as well as toxicological studies, are necessary to confirm these results.

Existing studies have found inconclusive associations between prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and offspring neurodevelopment. However, there is a significant gap in research involving African American populations, who face higher levels of exposure to many POPs relative to other groups. In this study, we assessed the joint effects of PFAS and PBDEs on child behavior problems among mother-child pairs in Atlanta, Georgia. Our study population included a subset of mother-child pairs participating in a prospective birth cohort (N = 159) for whom exposure and outcome data were available. Four PFAS and three PBDEs were measured in serum samples obtained during the first trimester of pregnancy. The Child Behavior Checklist was administered annually from ages 1-5 years and used to assess internalizing and externalizing behavior problems (averaged across all time-points). We used quantile g-computation, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), and self-organizing maps (SOM) to assess associations between POPs mixtures and internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Using quantile g-computation, we observed that increasing concentrations of prenatal PBDEs were associated with more internalizing and externalizing behavior problems (e.g., psi = 0.20, 95 % CI = 0.04, 0.36 for externalizing problems). The SOM cluster reflecting high PFAS and high PBDEs was similarly associated with an increase in internalizing and externalizing behavior problems compared to the reference cluster (e.g., beta = 0.44 95 % CI = 0.08, 0.81 for internalizing problems). The positive associations were attributable to PBDEs, while PFAS were negatively associated with both outcomes across all three methods. Herein, we propose magnetic nanocomposites as a powerful new catalyst for organic pollutant reduction. Polypyrrole (PPy) was synthesized in situ within the semi-interpenetrating alginate (Alg)/gelatin (Ge) network in presence of alpha-Fe2O3 as encapsulating matrix and inorganic filler, respectively. The polymeric matrix can act as bifunctional agent such as a binder and stabilizer to improve nanocatalyst stability while preserving their catalytic/magnetic performances. The results showed that Alg/Ge/PPy/Fe(2)O(3 )catalyst was more effective than its Alg/Ge/PPy and Alg/Ge/PPy/Fe(2)O(3 )homologues, suggesting a synergistic effect between PPy and alpha-Fe(2)O(3 )for efficient pollutant removal. Nevertheless, despite the fact that the nanocatalysts showed good catalytic activity for all selected organic pollutants, a selectivity was observed in the following order: methyl orange (MO) > direct red 16 > congo red>amoxicillin>ciprofloxacin>acetamiprid with a rate constant k of 0.54 min-1 achieved for MO reduction over Alg/Ge/PPy/Fe2O3. The proposed mechanism for MO reduction based on HPLC-Q-TOF analysis supports the rupture of azo bond through hydrogenation. Moreover, magnetic nanocatalysts were easily recovered and reused without apparent loss of catalytic activity up to six successive cycles (89 %), and under different mineral salt samples. Lastly, the advantage of the optimized catalyst lies in its reduced manufacturing cost compared with those based on gold, platinum or silver.

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated associations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with sexrelated hormones;however, findings were inconsistent. Sex-specific impacts and pathways through which adiposity influences associations are not completely understood. We sought to evaluate sex-specific associations of POPs serum concentration with sex-related hormones and to explore pathways through which adiposity may modify associations. Methods: We studied 1073 men and 716 postmenopausal women participating in the "persistent organic pollutants, Endogenous Hormones, and Diabetes in Latinos" ancillary study which is a subcohort of the "Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos." We use baseline examination data collected from 2008 to 2011 to investigate associations between eight organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), five polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) groups, sum of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polybrominated biphenyl 153 on sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and various sex-related hormone levels. We examined associations cross-sectionally using linear and logistic regression models adjusted for complex survey design and confounders. Results: PCBs and select OCPs were associated with increased SHBG in women and decreased estradiol (E2) and/ or bioavailable E2 in men. For instance, per quartile increase in serum concentrations of & sum;PCBs and oxychlordane were associated with decreased levels of E2 ((3 = -6.36 pmol/L;95% CI: 10.7,-2.02 and (3 = -5.08 pmol/L;95% CI: 8.11,-2.05) and bioavailable E2 ((3 = -4.48 pmol/L;95% CI: 7.22,-1.73 and (3 = -4.23 pmol/L;95% CI: 6.17,-2.28), respectively, in men, and increased levels of SHBG ((3 = 7.25 nmol/L;95% CI:2.02,12.8 and (3 = 9.42 nmol/L;95% CI:4.08,15.0), respectively, in women. p,p'-DDT and (3-HCCH, and o,p'-DDT were also associated with decreased testosterone (T) and bioavailable T (ng/dL) levels in men. Background: Whether exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may incur microRNAs (miRNAs) dysregulation remains largely unclear. Objectives: We aim to identify the miRNA signature and related pathways of low-level POPs exposure in a community-based population. Methods: We used general linear regression to model the association of POPs with plasma miRNAs, adjusting for age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index, triglyceride, and total cholesterol levels. We performed pathway enrichment analysis based on 11 experimentally validated and prediction-based databases, and performed tissue specificity analysis. Results: We identified 19 POPs significantly associated with 23 miRNAs at false discovery rate-adjusted P value < 0.2, most of which were related to organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticides. Pathway enrichment of the associated miRNAs highlighted chromosome segregation, RNA splicing, autophagy regulation, lipid metabolism, cell growth, development and differentiation, cell cycle regulation, neural network construction, and signal transduction. Notably, 13 POPs were positively associated with miR-6810-3p, a miRNA enriched in temporal lobe with high tissue specificity (Tissue Specificity Index = 0.78). Pathway analysis revealed that miR-6810-3p contributes to the positive regulation of autophagy and multiple cellular functions related to the nervous system such as transport along microtubules, maintenance of cell polarity, and synaptic transmission. Conclusion: In conclusion, we identified POPs-related miRNA signatures in community-dwelling adults, and highlighted miR-6810-3p in association with multiple POPs, with a potential role in nervous system regulation.

Legacy and emerging persistent organic pollutants in sea turtles from Korean waters: Levels, profiles, and interspecies differences

Sea turtles, as endangered species with their long lifespans, wide-ranging migration, and high trophic level, are effective bioindicators of marine pollution. Despite the importance of global monitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in sea turtles, research has been limited, especially in Asia. This study examined the accumulation of POPs in the livers of 44 sea turtles from Korean waters, including loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green turtles (Chelonia mydas). The turtles accumulated the chemicals in the order PAHs > PCBs > DDTs > PBDEs > CHLs, HBCDs, hexachlorobenzene, HCHs > mirex, pentachlorobenzene. Loggerhead turtles had significantly higher levels of DDTs, HCHs, pentachlorobenzene, and PBDEs than green turtles (Wilcoxon rank sum test, p < 0.01), along with a higher proportion of bioaccumulative congeners and isomers, likely due to their primarily carnivorous diet compared to the predominantly herbivorous diet of green turtles. Conversely, HBCD levels were similar in both species, yet green turtles had a higher proportion of gamma-HBCD-the dominant isomer in commercial HBCDs used as plastic additives, with lower bioaccumulation potential-likely reflecting their greater ingestion of plastic debris than loggerhead turtles. Notably, sea turtles had higher ratios of gamma-HBCD to alpha-HBCD and HBCDs to PCBs than seabirds from Korean waters, implying greater exposure to plastic-derived POPs. This study highlights the widespread accumulation of legacy and emerging POPs, including plastic-associated chemicals, in Korean sea turtles. These findings underscore the need for global POP monitoring in sea turtles and further research on the environmental fate and impact of plastic-associated chemicals.

A comprehensive review of soil remediation contaminated by persistent organic pollutants using electrokinetic: Challenging enhancement techniques

The hydrophobic, hard-to-naturally-decompose compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and pesticides, are categorized as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). POPs are toxic/hazardous and present serious risks to human health. Electrokinetic (EK) remediation is highly flexible and cost-effective, suitable for both in-situ and ex-situ applications. It effectively targets a wide range of contaminants, including metals and organic compounds, especially in low-permeability and low-hydraulic conductivity soils, where traditional methods are less effective. This technology is easy to install and can be combined with other strategies for enhanced remediation in complex soil environments. This paper underscores EK remediation as a promising method for addressing soil pollution caused by these organic pollutants, especially in low-permeability soil. The present review starts with the classification, toxicity effects, and source of POPs in the environment. Theoretical aspects and fundamentals of EK, including transport mechanisms and principles, are also reviewed. The theoretical underpinnings of effective factors are comprehensively explored, such as surface charge, zeta potential, pHpzc, and numerical modeling of transport fluxes. Moreover, a comprehensive examination is undertaken regarding the operation and design considerations of the EK process, encompassing factors like pH, electrode arrangement, electrolyte, and voltage. Subsequently, it is highlighted that EK has the potential to come in synergistically in contact with other remediation technologies to augment the POPs' degradation. Various enhancement techniques are also explored, including solvent extraction, chemical oxidation, bioremediation, and permeable reactive barriers to combine with EK. persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a group of organic chemical compounds. Contradictory results have emerged in epidemiological studies attempting to elucidate their relationship with breast cancer risk. This study explored the relationship between dietary exposures to multiple POPs and ER-positive breast cancer risk in the French E3N cohort study, using three different approaches to handle multicollinearity among exposures. Intakes of 81 POPs were estimated using food consumption data from a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and food contamination data. In the first approach, hierarchical clustering was performed to identify clusters of correlated POPs. For each cluster, the levels of POPs belonging to it were averaged. These average levels were then included in a Cox model to estimate their associations with ER-positive breast cancer occurrence. The second and third approaches applied in the present study were Principal component Cox regression (PCR-Cox) and partial least squares Cox regression (PLS-Cox) respectively, both being dimension-reduction methods (respectively unsupervised and supervised) coupled to a Cox model, used to identify principal components of POPs and to estimate their associations with ER-positive breast occurrence. All models were adjusted for potential confounders previously identified using a directed acyclic graph. The study included 66,722 women with a median follow-up of 20.3 years, during which 3,739 developed an incident ER-positive breast cancer. The variable clustering method did not identify any association between the averaged variables and ER-positive breast cancer risk. Five components were retained using both the PCR-Cox and PLS-Cox methods explaining 82% and 77% of the variance in the initial exposure matrix respectively. Among these components, none was significantly associated with the occurrence of ER-positive breast cancer. This study provides an illustrative example of the application of three
