phase coded radar signal is one of the pulse-pulse modulation signal in the radar system. Based on the characteristics of matched filtering, we theoretically analyze the basic principle of the phase coded compression radar system. In the Matlab platform, we set up a simulation model which is used for matching filter, when the radar transmitting signal is Barke code signal. The simulation results show that Echo signal can obtain certain pulse compression ratio. By the matched filter, the main lobe amplitude of 13 bits Barker code signal is 22 times the rate of side-lobe. 13 bits Barker codes by the matched filter have the maximum pulse compression ratio.

Modified codewords design for space-time block coded spatial modulation

Two kinds of modified codewords for space-time block coded spatial modulation (STBC-SM) are presented in this study. The first modified codeword introduces a concept of flexible coefficients into the M-ary phase shift keying STBC-SM. A method is proposed to obtain the optimal flexible coefficients. Moreover, the first modified codewords can also be applied to the systems developed from the STBC-SM. In the second provided codewords, super-orthogonal space-time trellis codes are applied in STBC-SM. Therefore, a higher spectral efficiency is obtained compared with the original STBC-SM. Finally, the simulation results and theoretical analysis demonstrate these performance advantages of the two kinds of modified codewords for STBC-SM.

Photonic generation of binary phase-coded microwave waveforms and phase-coded pulses with ultrawide frequency tunable range

A scheme that can produce a continuous wave (CW) phase-coded signal and phase-coded pulses is proposed. The proposed scheme is based on a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM), a polarization modulator (PoIM) and a balanced photodetector (BPD) without the help of an electrical phase shifter or an electrical power divider. In DPoI-MZM, a carrier-suppressed double sideband (CS-DSB) signal and an optical carrier are, respectively, produced in the upper and lower arms, which are in two orthogonal polarization states. The output is then sent to a PoIM. The polarization multiplexed CS-DSB and optical carrier are phase modulated by driving the RF port of the PoIM with a coding signal. After beating between the modulated CS-DSB and optical carrier in a BPD, a stable CW phase-coded signal or phase-coded pulses can be obtained. The proposed scheme is experimentally verified. phase-coded microwave waveforms at 6 and 11 GHz are generated and phase-coded pulses at 11 GHz are also produced. Interpulse-frequency-agile and intrapulse-phase-coded waveform optimisation for extend-range correlation sidelobe suppression

Conventional stepped-frequency (SF) waveform utilises the frequency step between pulses to span a wide bandwidth. However, the frequency step size is limited by the width of the pulse to prevent the grating lobes, and the first lobe is about -13dB due to the uniformly sampling in frequency. Modulating the pulses [e.g. phase-coded (PC) modulation or linear frequency modulation] can increase the frequency step size and improve the performance of the sidelobes, but the sidelobes of the modulated SF waveform are still not the best. In this study, a PC frequency-hopping (PCFH) waveform to achieve optimal extend-range correlation sidelobes is presented. The presented waveform applies non-linear frequency evolution, optimal frequency order and different polyphase code to each pulse. In comparison to the SF waveform, the PCFH waveform has much higher degrees of freedom for suppressing extend-range correlation sidelobes. The authors propose a design scheme, which sequentially optimises the interpulse frequency, the FH order and the intrapulse-polyphase code to achieve the optimal extended-range correlation sidelobes. Simulation results validate the performance of the optimised waveform and the feasibility of the involved design method.

phase Code to Mitigate the Copolar Correlation Coefficient Bias in PPAR Weather Radar

One of the main challenges to the use of phased array radar for weather observations is the implementation of dual polarization with acceptable levels of cross-polar fields induced by the antenna. For example, to achieve acceptable differential reflectivity bias (i.e., less than 0.1 dB) using simultaneous transmission and reception of horizontally and vertically polarized waves, the isolation between coaxial cross-polar and copolar beams needs to be in excess of 50 dB. This presents a formidable challenge, because sufficient isolation cannot be achieved at an affordable price by the antenna hardware alone. Hence, additional approaches are required to reduce the differential reflectivity bias due to cross-polar fields. One proposed technique is a 180 degrees pulse-to-pulse phase change of signals injected in either the horizontal or vertical ports of the transmission elements. This approach mitigates the differential reflectivity bias but may increase the bias of the copolar correlation coefficient estimates and, in some cases, the bias of the differential phase estimates. Herein, a modified phase code is proposed, which maintains the differential reflectivity bias suppression but reduces the copolar correlation coefficient and differential phase bias with respect to the originally proposed phase code.

Generation of Frequency-Multiplied and phase-Coded Signal Using an Optical Polarization Division Multiplexing Modulator

A novel method to generate frequency-multiplied and phase-coded microwave signals based on a polarization division multiplexing (PDM) dual-arm Mach-Zehnder modulator (DMZM) or a PDM dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM) is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the PDM-DMZM or PDM-DPMZM is employed to produce two orthogonally polarized wavelengths with a wavelength spacing that is two, four, or eight times of the driving frequency. Then the signal is sent into a polarization modulator-based microwave photonic phase coder for phase coding. A theoretical analysis and an experiment are carried out. phase-coded signals with frequency multiplication factors of two, four and eight are successfully generated. The bandwidth of the system is discussed, and the impact of the polarization extinction ratio is also analyzed.

Loran phase code revisited for continuous wave interference cancellation

A new phase coding is proposed to eliminate the continuous wave interference (CWI) in Loran navigation systems. In fact, CWI is one of the most important noise sources that make errors in signal phase tracking. Consequently, undesirable errors are constructed in time of arrival (TOA) measurement and ultimately navigation precision is reduced dramatically. The performance of Loran navigation systems is improved by applying the proposed phase coding and also using the averaging and phase decoding method. Analyses results show that if the interference is synchronous, then the proposed phase coding, called as Bayat-Madani phase code interval, cancels interference effects on TOA measurement completely. This interference cancelation is independent from the received signal signal-to-interference ratio. For near-synchronous and asynchronous CWI, the TOA error originated from interference is improved considerably, in some frequencies about 100 times, compared to the standard Loran. Furthermore, almost all of the sky multi-hops are eliminated as well.

A Frequency-Tunable Binary phase-Coded Microwave Signal Generator With a Tunable Frequency Multiplication Factor

A novel frequency-tunable binary phase-coded microwave signal generator with a tunable frequency multiplication factor is proposed. The key component of the proposed system is a dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift-keying (DP-QPSK) modulator, which is driven by the microwave reference signal and the coding signal. By properly controlling the bias points of the DP-QPSK modulator and the amplitudes of the microwave reference signal and the coding signal, a fundamental, frequency-doubled, frequency-tripled or frequency-quadrupled binary phase-coded microwave signal can be generated when two orthogonally polarized optical signals at the output of the DP-QPSK modulator are combined and then detected in a photodetector. The proposed system is experimentally evaluated. A binary phase-coded microwave signal is generated at the fundamental, doubled, tripled, or quadrupled frequency. The frequency tunability and the pulse compression performance of the generated phase-coded microwave signals are also experimentally studied.

Extended orthogonal matching pursuit for robust and fast target localisation in multiple-input multiple-output radar

The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar combines ultra-wide angular illumination on transmit and narrow transmission angular resolution after processing on receive. Orthogonal waveforms are needed in theory for all independent transmitters, but this property is usually not achievable in practice, therefore leading to a degraded ambiguity function. In this study, the authors focus on phase codes waveform, which gives quasi-optimal angle and range resolution. On the other hand, they induce a harmful floor' of high-level sidelobes in the range-angle domain. The authors propose to apply the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) to the MIMO radar signals. Therefore, it becomes theoretically possible to detect targets initially hidden by high-level sidelobes. Nevertheless, the authors identify phenomenon (grid granularity, neighbour influence) that lead to possible localisation error resulting in ghost targets. Considering this, the authors propose an extension of the OMP rejection step that includes, in addition to the expected target position, the neighbour positions within the uncertainty area. The authors show that this extension allows them to suppress the sensibility of the OMP to localisation error, even in case of very close targets. Finally, the authors demonstrate the performance of the proposed method on simulations as well as on experimental MIMO radar signals.
